The question of why some social systems have evolved close inbreeding is particularly intriguing given expected short- and long-term negative effects of this breeding system. Using social spiders as a case study, we quantitatively show that the potential costs of avoiding inbreeding through dispersal and solitary living could have outweighed the costs of inbreeding depression in the origin of inbred spider sociality. We further review the evidence that despite being favored in the short term, inbred spider sociality may constitute in the long run an evolutionary dead end. We also review other cases, such as the naked mole rats and some bark and ambrosia beetles, mites, psocids, thrips, parasitic ants, and termites, in which inbreeding and sociality are associated and the evidence for and against this breeding system being, in general, an evolutionary dead end.

INTRODUCTION. Neurally Adjusted Ventilatory Assist (NAVA) is an assisted ventilatorymode in which the ventilator is driven by the electrical activity of the diaphragm (Eadi).NAVAimproves patient-ventilator synchrony [1] but little is known about how to set the NAVA gaini.e., how to choose the ratio between Eadi and delivered pressure. The aim of the present studywas to assess the relationship between Eadi and tidal volume (Vt) at various NAVA gainsettings and to evaluate whether modifying the gain influenced this relationship in non-invasivelyventilated (NIV) patients.METHODS. Prospective interventional study comparing 3 values of NAVA gain during NIV(20 min each). NAVA100 was set by the clinician according to the manufacturer's recommendations.In NAVA50 and NAVA150 the gain was set as -50% and +50% of NAVA100gain respectively. Vt and maximal Eadi value (Eadi max) were recorded. The ratio Vt/Eadi wasthen assessed for each breath. 5-95% range (range 90) of Vt/Eadi was calculated for eachpatient at each NAVA gain setting. Vt/Eadi ratio has the advantage to give an objectiveassessment Vt/Eadi max relationship independently from the nature of this relationship. Asmaller Range90 indicates a better matching of Vt to Eadi max.RESULTS. 12 patients were included, 5 had obstructive pulmonary disease and 2 mixedobstructive and restrictive disease. For NAVA100, the median [IQR] Range 90 was 32[19-87]. For NAVA150 Range 90 was 37 [20-95] and for NAVA50 Range 90 was 33 [16-92].That means that globally NAVA100 allowed a better match between Eadi max and Vt thanNAVA50 and 150. However, by patient, NAVA100 had the lowest Range 90 value for only 4patients (33%), NAVA150 for 2 (17%) and NAVA50 for 6 (50%) patients, indicating thatNAVA100 was not the best NAVA gain for minimizing Range 90 in every patients.Comparing the lowest Range 90 value to the next lowest for each patient, showed that 3 patientshad differences of less than 10% (one each for NAVA50, NAVA100 and NAVA150). Theremainder had differences from 17 to 24%, indicating that most patients (9/12 or 75%) had aclear better match between Eadi and Vt for one specific NAVA gain.CONCLUSIONS. Different NAVA gains yielded markedly different ability to match Vt toEadi max. This article analyzes if, and to what extent, the public service motivation (PSM) construct has an added value to explain work motivation in the public sector. In order to address the specificity of PSM when studying work motivation, the theoretical model underlying this empirical study compares PSM with two other explanatory factors: material incentives, such as performance-related pay, and team relations and support, such as recognition by superiors. This theoretical model is then tested with data collected in a national survey of 3,754 civil servants at the Swiss municipal level. Results of a structural equations model clearly show the relevance of PSM. They also provide evidence for the importance of socio-relational motivating factors, whereas material incentives play an anecdotal role.

Background Working in a teaching hospital is a highly stressful occupation, which can lead to burnout. The consequences of burnout in health professionals can be very serious, both for themselves and patients. The aim of this cross-sectional study was to assess the extent of burnout and associated factors in hospital employees. Methods In the Fall of 2007, all employees of a Swiss teaching hospital were invited to complete a job satisfaction survey. It included the work-related burnout scale (scored 0-100) of the Copenhagen Burnout Inventory (CBI-French version), measuring the degree of physical and psychological fatigue and exhaustion perceived as related to the person's work; a high degree of burnout was defined as a score _50. Logistic regression analyses were used to determine factors associated with a high degree of burnout. Results A total of 4575 individuals returned the questionnaire (response rate 54%). Of them, 1503 (33%) had a high degree of burnout. The rate of burnout was higher among women (34.3% versus 30.5%, P = 0.012) and respondents younger than 40 years (37.7% versus 28.6%, P < 0.001). Executives were less prone to burnout than employees (27.1% versus 33.9%, P < 0.0019). Rates of burnout differed by profession: nurses and physicians had higher rates than administrative and logistic staff (42.8% and 37.4% versus 25.6% and 20.9%, respectively P < 0.001). Burnout was inversely associated with job satisfaction. In multivariate analysis, factors associated with burnout were overall dissatisfaction (OR 3.23; 95% CI 2.66-3.91), dissatisfaction with workload (OR 2.09; 95% CI 1.74-2.51) and work-life balance (OR 2.25; 95% CI 1.83-2.77), being a woman (OR 1.56; 95% CI 1.28-1.90), working fulltime (OR 1.41; 95% CI 1.08-1.85) and working as a nurse, a physician or in the psychosocial sector. Conclusions One-third of respondents, mostly nurses and physicians, experienced burnout and had lower levels of job satisfaction. The factors associated with burnout may help to tailor programmes aiming at reducing burnout at both the individual and organizational level within the hospital.

Although there is consensus that the central nervous system mediates the increases in maximal voluntary force (maximal voluntary contraction, MVC) produced by resistance exercise, the involvement of the primary motor cortex (M1) in these processes remains controversial. We hypothesized that 1-Hz repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) of M1 during resistance training would diminish strength gains. Forty subjects were divided equally into five groups. Subjects voluntarily (Vol) abducted the first dorsal interosseus (FDI) (5 bouts x 10 repetitions, 10 sessions, 4 wk) at 70-80% MVC. Another group also exercised but in the 1-min-long interbout rest intervals they received rTMS [Vol+rTMS, 1 Hz, FDI motor area, 300 pulses/session, 120% of the resting motor threshold (rMT)]. The third group also exercised and received sham rTMS (Vol+Sham). The fourth group received only rTMS (rTMS_only). The 37.5% and 33.3% gains in MVC in Vol and Vol+Sham groups, respectively, were greater (P = 0.001) than the 18.9% gain in Vol+rTMS, 1.9% in rTMS_only, and 2.6% in unexercised control subjects who received no stimulation. Acutely, within sessions 5 and 10, single-pulse TMS revealed that motor-evoked potential size and recruitment curve slopes were reduced in Vol+rTMS and rTMS_only groups and accumulated to chronic reductions by session 10. There were no changes in rMT, maximum compound action potential amplitude (M(max)), and peripherally evoked twitch forces in the trained FDI and the untrained abductor digiti minimi. Although contributions from spinal sources cannot be excluded, the data suggest that M1 may play a role in mediating neural adaptations to strength training.
