“Searching for the ghost of Tom Joad”: resurrecting Steinbeck’s gaze

This dissertation involves a close reading of Springsteen’s lyrics in relation to the thematic concerns of the Tom Joad album. Enquiring into the sometimes multiple levels of significance that these lyrics can be seen to express, in order to show the manner in which Springsteen mirrors the broader thematic concerns of Steinbeck’s The Grapes of Wrath’ s novel but also adapts and reinterprets these themes for his own time. In this sense, I will try to underline the ways in which, for Springsteen’s vision of his country in the 1990’s, the presence of troublesome issues from decades before is one that can, in certain ways, still be seen, felt and experienced. A postcolonial gaze on monumentality. The need for interdisciplinary approaches

This article is a reflection on a master thesis. The article tries to unravel some of the interdisciplinary keys present in the work and necessary for the development of research on Public Space and Public Art. At the same time argues in favor of"post colonial" reading over the-produced space by the colonial powers, both in terms of its structural dimension and in the dimension of 'decorum'.

Multimodal Strategies in Development.Predictive Value of early simultaneosgesture-speech comination

The present study investigates the predictive value of the early appearance of simultaneous pointing-speech combinations. An experimental task was used to obtain a communicative productive sample from nineteen children at 1;0 and 1;3. Infant’s communicative productions, in combination with gaze joint engagement patterns, were analyzed in relation to different social conditions. The results show a significant effect of age and social condition on infants’ communicative productions. Gesture-speech combinations seem to work as a strong communicative resource to attract the adult’s attention in social demanding communicative contexts. Gaze joint engagement was used in combination with simultaneous pointing-speech combinations to attract adults’ attention during social demanding conditions. Finally, the use of simultaneous pointing-speech combinations at 1;0 in demanding conditions predicted greater expressive vocabulary acquisition at 1;3 and 1;6. These results indicate that the use of gesture-speech combinations may be considered a significant step towards the early integration of language components.

Effects of P300-based BCI use on reported presence in a virtual environment

Brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) are becoming more and more popular as an input device for virtual worlds and computer games. Depending on their function, a major drawback is the mental workload associated with their use and there is significant effort and training required to effectively control them. In this paper, we present two studies assessing how mental workload of a P300-based BCI affects participants" reported sense of presence in a virtual environment (VE). In the first study, we employ a BCI exploiting the P300 event-related potential (ERP) that allows control of over 200 items in a virtual apartment. In the second study, the BCI is replaced by a gaze-based selection method coupled with wand navigation. In both studies, overall performance is measured and individual presence scores are assessed by means of a short questionnaire. The results suggest that there is no immediate benefit for visualizing events in the VE triggered by the BCI and that no learning about the layout of the virtual space takes place. In order to alleviate this, we propose that future P300-based BCIs in VR are set up so as require users to make some inference about the virtual space so that they become aware of it,which is likely to lead to higher reported presence.

"Me gustaría ser militar". Reproducción de la masculinidad hegemónica en la patologización de la transexualidad

La Organización Mundial de la Salud y la Asociación de Psiquiatría Americana catalogan la transexualidad como una patología bajo el nombre de ‘trastorno de identidad de género’ y ‘disforia de género’, respectivamente. En el contexto español, la Ley 3/2007 establece que para poder modificarse la mención de sexo hace falta presentar, entre otros, un certificado de dicho diagnóstico. Las Unidades de Trastornos de Identidad de Género, ubicadas en las unidades de psiquiatría de diferentes hospitales públicos, son las encargadas de expedir este tipo de certificados una vez pasado un proceso que puede durar dos años. En este artículo, tras analizar la construcción del género que subyace en el discurso médico oficial sobre la transexualidad se concluye que se establece una visión patologizadora, binarista, biologista y que fomenta, en el caso de los trans masculinos, los estereotipos de la masculinidad hegemónica.
