We study firms' corporate governance in environments where possibly heterogeneous shareholders compete for possibly heterogeneous managers. A firm, formed by a shareholder and a manager, can sign either an incentive contract or a contract including a Code of Best Practice. A Code allows for a better manager's control but makes manager's decisions hard to react when market conditions change. It tends to be adopted in markets with low volatility and in low-competitive environments. The firms with the best projects tend to adopt the Code when managers are not too heterogeneous while the best managers tend to be hired through incentive contracts when the projects are similar. Although the matching between shareholders and managers is often positively assortative, the shareholders with the best projects might be willing to renounce to hire the best managers, signing contracts including Codes with lower-ability managers.

[eng] Aim: The paper examines the current situation of recognition of patients' right to information in international standards and in the national laws of Belgium, France, Italy, Spain (and Catalonia), Switzerland and the United Kingdom.Methodology: International standards, laws and codes of ethics of physicians and librarians that are currently in force were identified and analyzed with regard to patients' right to information and the ownership of this right. The related subjects of access to clinical history, advance directives and informed consent were not taken into account.Results: All the standards, laws and codes analyzed deal with guaranteeing access to information. The codes of ethics of both physicians and librarians establish the duty to inform.Conclusions: Librarians must collaborate with physicians in the process of informing patients.

Since ethical concerns are calling for more attention within Operational Research, we present three approaches to combine Operational Research models with ethics. Our intention is to clarify the trade-offs faced by the OR community, in particular the tension between the scientific legitimacy of OR models (ethics outside OR models) and the integration of ethics within models (ethics within OR models). Presenting and discussing an approach that combines OR models with the process of OR (ethics beyond OR models), we suggest rigorous ways to express the relation between ethics and OR models. As our work is exploratory, we are trying to avoid a dogmatic attitude and call for further research. We argue that there are interesting avenues for research at the theoretical, methodological and applied levels and that the OR community can contribute to an innovative, constructive and responsible social dialogue about its ethics.

We provide a cultural explanation to the phenomenon of corruption in the framework of an overlapping generations model with intergenerational transmissionof values. We show that the economy has two steady states with different levels of corruption. The driving force in the equilibrium selection process is the education effort exerted by parents which depends on the distribution of ethics in the population and on expectations about future policies. We propose some policy interventions which via parents' efforts have long-lasting effects on corruption and show the success of intensive education campaigns. Educating the young is a key element in reducing corruption successfully.

Culture has several meanings: civilization, creation, knowledge, life… We analyze how each one suffers the so-called crisis of culture. Civilization lives the crisis as «liquidity», according to Bauman’s diagnosis, with significant negative impact on education. The creation and enjoyment of cultural products, such as museums, suffer its crisis as fragility resulting from the civilization crisis, notably in the form of consumerist banality or pure entertainment. Culture as knowledge and as life is analyzed under the joint notion «humanistic culture». This, which in turn is creation, knowledge and life has its specific corruption in the elitist knowledge, merely theoretical. The hallmark of genuine humanism contains an essential component, the dimension of ethical and political commitment. The crisis in the humanistic studies, noted by Nussbaum, threats the values of humanistic culture; in particular is a political risk, because democracy is a system that needs to sustain and improve the values of humanistic culture. La cerca de similituds als codis genètics de dos espècies, ens permet obtenir molta informació de la evolució dels seus genomes. Aquesta informació afavoreix el descobriment de gens que es conserven amb la mateixa funcionalitat a diferents espècies. També té importants aplicacions mèdiques i ens permet entendre els processos evolutius que han portat a la diversitat d'espècies de l'actualitat. El present treball té l'objectiu d'automatitzar una sèrie de processos d'un servidor d'aplicacions web: http://platypus.uab.cat, que realitzin de forma òptima i eficient, la comparació dels genomes eucariotes, tots amb tots, conforme aquests genomes siguin seqüenciats. Així aquestes comparacions entre genomes de organismes superiors podran ser consultades via web.

El present treball exposa el contingut i procediment d’una sessió emmarcada en un taller–seminari sobre ètica aplicada als àmbits professionals de la psicologia. L’objectiu de la mateixa és introduir als estudiants en els fonaments del Codi Deontològic, així com la reflexió d’alguns dels articles que aquest conté. El mètode expositiu consisteix en presentar i discutir tres situacions, èticament problemàtiques, a partir de les quals s’il·lustra el contingut normatiu de diferents articles que regulen l’exercici professional en l’àmbit de la psicologia

Aquest article estudia el documental històric amb la intenció de confrontar alguna de les controvèrsies que han sorgit sobre la idea de la reconstrucció històrica en el camp del cinema i de la televisió. El primer punt plantejat consisteix en l’actualització de la idea proposada per Marc Ferro de que cada pel•lícula és un document de mentalitats, partint de dues idees bàsiques: primer, que el cinema, a més de ser un document, té una història com a producte artístic i segon, que la documentació del passat ha de dur-se a terme sense caure en el que Tzevan Todorov diu els abusos de la memòria. El segon punt té a veure amb el problema de com la història és modificada donada la percepció que tenim de ella des d’un punt particular al present. Finalment, entra en el tema de la ètica amb la intenció de fer front al problema de les limitacions de l’acte de mostrar en un moment històric particular en que aquesta mostra ha estat transformada en una forma de banalització

The Journal of Medicine and Philosophy has been impoverished by the loss of Dr. Francesc Abel Fabre, S.J. (1933–2011), one of the founders of bioethics and a long-time member of the Editorial Advisory Board. 2011 brought the death of Dr. Francesc Abel Fabre, S.J., at the age of 78. He was the pioneer of European bioethics. Dr. Abel learned the discipline at Georgetown University, working side by side with the founder and first director of the Kennedy Institute of Ethics, André Hellegers, as bioethics itself was coming into existence. He went from this experience to establish the Institute Borja of Bioethics in Catalonia in 1976, the first center of bioethics in Spain and in Europe. Through his scholarship and teaching, he established an influential dialogue in bioethics, as well as ethics committees in hospitals and in research centers. In 1986 he joined in founding the European Association of Centres of Medical Ethics, an organization in which he was involved and participated for the last 25 years. He contributed crucially to bioethics across the world, especially through the International Study Group on Bioethics (1980–1994). He was widely recognized as an outstanding bioethics expert in Latin America.

La relación educativa entraña, inevitablemente, el debate entorno de la verticalidad y del ejercicio del poder. De qué modo nos relacionamos y cómo gestionamos la comunicación entre educadores y educandos, así como entre iguales. Esa tensión se ve amplificada en la medida que incorporamos lógicas evaluativas en nuestro quehacer profesional. La siguiente comunicación describe la experiencia de la metodología de aprendizaje basada en la evaluación entre iguales aplicada a la profesionalización de los y las educadores/as sociales. Tanto a nivel escolar como en el universitario hay numerosas experiencias publicadas en relación a la metodología de evaluación entre iguales. Además, existen numerosos apartados de los “Documentos profesionalizadores” donde se justifica el hecho de que se entrenen algunas habilidades que deberían darse en la práctica profesional (como por ejemplo en la definición, en el código ético, y en el catálogo de funciones y competencias del/la educador/a social). En esta comunicación pretendemos dar a conocer la experiencia de entrenamiento de futuros educadores en aspectos que tienen una relación directa con la evaluación entre educadores/as sociales. Así pues, utilizaremos una justificación académica y metodológica de la actividad, enlazándola con los documentos profesionalizadores con un fin relacionado directamente con el ejercicio de la profesión.

Además, existen numerosos apartados de los “Documentos profesionalizadores” donde se justifica el hecho de que se entrenen algunas habilidades que deberían darse en la práctica profesional (como porejemplo en la definición, en el código ético y en el catálogo de funciones y competencias del educador/a social). En estas páginas pretendemos dar a conocer la experiencia de entrenamiento de futuros educadores/as en aspectos que tienen una relación directa con la evaluación entre educadores/as sociales.
