Globalization and the Symphony of the New (Post-modern) World: From Westphalia to Maastricht…passing by Washington DC

Taking on the challenge of understanding and explaining the Symphony of (today’s) New World in realistic terms (not realist), this essay aims to analyse the Post-Cold war era by devising a multi-conceptual framework that combines different theoretical contributions not yet linked in a fully explanatory way. This paper suggests two inter-related analytical contexts (or background melodies) to understand Dvorak´s "New World”. First, the socio-economic structural context that falls under the controversial category of Globalization and, second, the post-modern political structural context that is built on Robert Cooper’s threefold analysis (Pre-modern, Modern and Post-modern) of today’s world [Cooper, R: 1997, 1999]. Lastly, the closing movement (allegro con fuoco) enters the normative arena to assess American foreign policy options in the light of the theoretical framework devised in the first part of the essay.

Las Traducciones al castellano y al catalán de Emil und die detektive. Un estudio descriptivo.

El presente trabajo tiene como objetivo describir las traducciones al castellano y al catalán de la novela infantil Emil und die Detektive (1929) de Erich Kästner (1899-1974). El enfoque del análisis se centra en el tratamiento por parte de los traductores de las características lingüísticas que cons¬tituyen la concepción hablada de la narración así como en las referencias culturales presentes en la obra. De acuerdo con la teoría del polisistema, partimos de la hipótesis de que en el proceso de traducción se llevaron a cabo numerosas modificaciones sobre el original con el objetivo de ajustar el texto meta a las normas del sistema receptor. Asimismo, se encuentran en las traducciones nume¬rosos casos de intervencionismo, es decir manipulaciones del original por parte de los traductores que principalmente obedecen a las convicciones ideológicas, morales y religiosas, ya sean perso¬nales o dominantes en la cultura meta. Tanto la tendencia de los textos meta hacia la aceptabilidad en lo que se refiere a los rasgos lingüísticos y al tratamiento de las referencias culturales, como la presencia de los intervencionismos más arbitrarios estarían motivadas por las características de los lectores meta así como por las funciones didácticas y educativas de la literatura infantil y juvenil y se justificarían por la posición periférica de este género en el polisistema literario.

Device for simultaneous measurement of the Peltier and Seebeck coefficients verification of the Kelvin relation

We have designed and built an experimental device, which we called a "thermoelectric bridge." Its primary purpose is simultaneous measurement of the relative Peltier and Seebeck coefficients. The systematic errors for both coefficients are equal with this device and manipulation is not necessary between the measurement of one coefficient and the other. Thus, this device is especially suitable for verifying their linear relation postulated by Lord Kelvin. Also, simultaneous measurement of thermal conductivity is described in the text. A sample is made up of the couple nickel¿platinum, taking measurements in the range of ¿20¿60°C and establishing the dependence of each coefficient with temperature, with nearly equal random errors ±0.2%, and systematic errors estimated at ¿0.5%. The aforementioned Kelvin relation is verified in this range from these results, proving that the behavioral deviations are ¿0.3% contained in the uncertainty ±0.5% caused by the propagation of errors
