Cooperative Transmission and Radio Resources Management for Wireless Networks

Report for the scientific sojourn at the Multimedia Communications Laboratory, University of Texas at Dallas, USA, from September to December 2005. The cooperative transmission has been analyzed taking a broadcast relay channel which assumes a scenario with one source and multiple destinations. Moreover, in order to improve the performance in terms of mutual information, it has been considered that for each destination there is another nearby terminal (called relay) which will help to improve the performance of the destination. This scheme combines different types of channels considered in the information theory, such as the relay channel, broadcast channel and interference channel (if the relays transmit information intended only to its associated destination). In this work, the author has studied the optimal way to encode the signals for the different users, known as capacity region (i.e. related to radio resources management ), of the broadcast relay channel.

Catalytic tuning of phosphinoethane ligand. An improved catalyst for hydrocarbon

Report for the scientific sojourn carried out at the Department of Chemistry University of North Texas (USA) from September until November 2006. It includes the performance of two computational chemistry studies: an experimental and computational study toward the intra- and intermolecular hydroarylation of isonitriles and the development of an improved catalyst for hydrocarbon functionalization.

Visió per computador en una plataforma basada en un DSP

En aquest projecte s'usa el servidor de vídeo d'Axis Communications 242s IV, basat en el DSP TMS320DM642 de Texas Instruments, com a plataforma per a la implementació d'un algorisme d'extracció de fons i pel desenvolupament d'una solució completa de comptatge de persones per a càmera zenital. En el primer cas, s'ha optimitzat i comparat el rendiment de l'algorisme amb el d'una versió per a PC per a avaluar el DSP com a processador per a lamigració d'una aplicació completa de vídeovigilància. En el segon cas s'han integrat tots els components del servidor en el desenvolupament del comptador per avaluar la plataforma com a base per a solucions completes.

Desenvolupament d'una xarxa de sensors i actuadors sense fils de propòsit industrial

Aquesta memòria de projecte final de carrera és un estudi i implementació bàsica de l’estat actual en quant a les tecnologies/protocols sense fils existents, en particular centrat en ZigBee sobre la plataforma CC2430 de Texas Instruments, per a una aplicació industrial amb una taxa de transferència de dades baixa, que no presenta un alt grau de complexitat, però que requereix gran versatilitat i fiabilitat.

Aquest projecte tracta d'aportar una idea al futur dels comptadors automàtics, on tant el usuaris, com les empreses, tindran un control continu sobre les dades. A més a més s’han buscar sistemes i protocols que realitzin una bona comunicació entre els comptadors automàtics, en aquest punt on entra la tecnologia W-Mbus. Aquesta tecnologia juntament amb els microcontroladors de baix consum, proporcionats per Texas Instruments, són la millor combinació per aconseguir el nostre objectiu.

SAAP - Sistema Automático de Apuestas de Poker

Se trata de la creación de una aplicación de apuestas virtuales automáticas al juego del Texas Hold'Em Poker en el mercado de apuestas más grande que existe ahora mismo en Internet, en Betfair, en su categoría de X-Games. La aplicación permite seleccionar varias estrategias de apuestas que irá aplicando en cada juego.

El arte abstracto y lo indecible: el fondo abisal de la obra de arte

A partir de una serie de pinturas murales que el artista norteamericano Mark Rothko realizó en los años 1963-66 para una capilla que lleva su nombre en la ciudad de Houston (Texas), se establece un recomdo por la teología negativa en las tres Religiones del Libro (judaísmo, cristianismo, Islam). El fin es establecer una relación entre la denominada «Escuela de Nueva York» (Mark Rothko, Ad Reinhardt, Barnett Newman, ... ) y la mística especulativa, fundada en las ideas comunes -a la teología apofática y a la «abstracción contemplativan- del Deus absconditus, la visión ascética, el despojamiento y la esencia de la imagen.

Application of Multi-SNP Approaches Bayesian LASSO and AUC-RF to Detect Main Effects of Inflammatory-Gene Variants Associated with Bladder Cancer Risk

The relationship between inflammation and cancer is well established in several tumor types, including bladder cancer. We performed an association study between 886 inflammatory-gene variants and bladder cancer risk in 1,047 cases and 988 controls from the Spanish Bladder Cancer (SBC)/EPICURO Study. A preliminary exploration with the widely used univariate logistic regression approach did not identify any significant SNP after correcting for multiple testing. We further applied two more comprehensive methods to capture the complexity of bladder cancer genetic susceptibility: Bayesian Threshold LASSO (BTL), a regularized regression method, and AUC-Random Forest, a machine-learning algorithm. Both approaches explore the joint effect of markers. BTL analysis identified a signature of 37 SNPs in 34 genes showing an association with bladder cancer. AUC-RF detected an optimal predictive subset of 56 SNPs. 13 SNPs were identified by both methods in the total population. Using resources from the Texas Bladder Cancer study we were able to replicate 30% of the SNPs assessed. The associations between inflammatory SNPs and bladder cancer were reexamined among non-smokers to eliminate the effect of tobacco, one of the strongest and most prevalent environmental risk factor for this tumor. A 9 SNP-signature was detected by BTL. Here we report, for the first time, a set of SNP in inflammatory genes jointly associated with bladder cancer risk. These results highlight the importance of the complex structure of genetic susceptibility associated with cancer risk.

Shout and Act: an Algorithm for Digital Objects Preservation Inspired from Rescue Robots

We adapt the Shout and Act algorithm to Digital Objects Preservation where agents explore file systems looking for digital objects to be preserved (victims). When they find something they “shout” so that agent mates can hear it. The louder the shout, the urgent or most important the finding is. Louder shouts can also refer to closeness. We perform several experiments to show that this system works very scalably, showing that heterogeneous teams of agents outperform homogeneous ones over a wide range of tasks complexity. The target at-risk documents are MS Office documents (including an RTF file) with Excel content or in Excel format. Thus, an interesting conclusion from the experiments is that fewer heterogeneous (varying skills) agents can equal the performance of many homogeneous (combined super-skilled) agents, implying significant performance increases with lower overall cost growth. Our results impact the design of Digital Objects Preservation teams: a properly designed combination of heterogeneous teams is cheaper and more scalable when confronted with uncertain maps of digital objects that need to be preserved.
