La industria textil y de la confección ha experimentado en Galicia un muy notable proceso de expansión en las últimas décadas. Esta actividad se localiza de modo específico en determinadas localidades y espacios, donde se configuran sistemas productivos locales, mientras en el resto su presencia es más débil. Otra de las características del sector es el contraste existente entre dos modelos empresariales: el vinculado al grupo multinacional Inditex y aquel asociado a un grupo de empresas de menor entidad, pero de gran capacidad competitiva en los segmentos de calidad asociados al diseño. El presente análisis presenta como objetivos: presentar las estrategias empresariales de los dos mode los productivos existentes, individualizar aquellos factores de carácter socioeconómico y territorial que han favorecido el desarrollo de la actividad e identificar las principales implicaciones territoriales que el sector ha generado en aquellas localidades donde su presencia es más significativa.

This paper analyzes the employment relationship on the basis of the notion of access. We argue that the degree of access provided by a job is an incentive to activate the employee’s self-actualization needs. We investigate the effect of access on the workers’ performance through an agency model and provide a number of propositions with practical implications for personnel policies. Our results are consistent with the intuition emerged from the real business practice as well as with many of the arguments on the substitutive role between monetary and non-monetary incentives frequently reported in the literature.

This paper concerns the effects of territorial factors on the processes involved in the creation of manufacturing firms in Spanish cities. Most contributions have focused on regional factors rather than urban ones. Here we assume that it is possible to identify certain urban factors that attract new firms. We use data for the entry of firms in Spanish manufacturing industries between 1994 and 2002. This paper contributes to the existing literature on market entry. El presente informe describe y cuantifica los principales mecanismos de cohesión social y territorial existentes en España, analiza su incidencia sobre la distribución regional de la renta y su contribución a la nivelación de la calidad de los servicios básicos, y propone algunos cambios en su diseño con el objetivo de mejorar sus propiedades de eficiencia y su adecuación a los principios constitucionales de igualdad, solidaridad y autonomía. La tesis central del tabajo es que el proceso de reformas autonómicas que ahora se inicia no debería en ningún caso suponer la ruptura de los mecanismos existentes de cohesión y debería aprovecharse para perfeccionarlos.

We analyze the effects of uncertainty and private information on horizontal mergers. Firms face uncertain demands or costs and receive private signals. They may decide to merge sharing their private information. If the uncertainty parameters are independent and the signals are perfect, uncertainty generates an informational advantage only to the merging firms, increasing merger incentives and decreasing free-riding effects. Thus, mergers become more profitable and stable. These results generalize to the case of correlated parameters if the correlation is not very severe, and for perfect correlation if the firms receive noisy signals. From the normative point of view, mergers are socially less harmful compared to deterministic markets and may even be welfare enhancing. If the signals are, instead, publicly observed, uncertainty does not necessarily give more incentives to merge, and mergers are not always less socially harmful.

In contrast to a harmonized tax, which would only have distributive effects within each member state, a tax collected at European scale would also have important distributive effects among different countries. At the end of the XIX Century, Marshall described the existence of some concentrations of small and medium enterprises specialised in a specific production activity in certain districts of some industrial English cities. Starting from his contribute, Italian scholars have paid particular attention to this local system of production coined by Marshall under the term industrial district. In other countries, different but related territorial models have played a central role as the milieu or the geographical industrial clusters. Recently, these models have been extended to non-industrial fields like culture, rural activities and tourism. In this text, we explore the extension of these territorial models to the study of tourist activities in Italy, using a framework that can be easily applied to other countries or regions. The paper is divided in five sections. In the first one, we propose a review of the territorial models applied to tourism industry. In the second part, we construct a tourist filiere and we apply a methodology for the identification of local systems through GIS tools. Thus, taxonomy of the Italian Tourist Local Systems is presented. In the third part, we discuss about the sources of competitiveness of these Tourist Local Systems. In the forth section, we test a spatial econometrics model regarding different kinds of Italian Tourist Local Systems (rural systems, arts cities, tourist districts) in order to measure external economies and territorial networks. Finally, conclusions and policy implications are exposed.

One of the most popular options for promoting public transport use is the provision of an integrated and high quality public transport system. This was the strategy adopted by the regional government in Madrid in 1986 and since then public transport patronage has increased by more than 50%. This paper has two objectives. The first is to identify the factors underlying the significant increase in the demand for public transport in Madrid. To do this we estimate an aggregate demand function for bus and underground trips, which allows us to obtain the demand elasticities with respect to the main attributes of public transport services and also to calculate the long-term impact of changes in those explanatory variables on patronage. The second objective is to evaluate the impact on revenue derived from the introduction of the travel card scheme, and to discuss the consequences on revenue of changes in the relative fare levels of different types of ticket without substantially affecting patronage. This latter issue is addressed by estimating a matrix of own and cross-price elasticities for different ticket types.

Recently a number of mainstream papers have treated the rise of democracy in 19th century Europe and its instability in Latin America in an eminently Marxist fashion. This paper sets out their implications for Marxist thought. With respect to Europe, Marx's emphasis on political action backed by the threat of violence is vindicated but his justification for socialism is not. With respect to Latin America, the unequal distribution of wealth is the cause of political instability that is, in turn, the root cause of mass poverty. In addition it is possible to explain some of the paradoxical characteristics of neo-liberalism and to make a weak argument for socialism in spite of its rejection in Europe.

This paper contributes to the existing literature on industrial location by discussing some issues regarding the territorial levels that have been used in location analysis. We analyse which could be the advantages and disadvantages of performing locational analysis at a different local levels. We use data for new manufacturing firms located at municipality, county and travel to work areas level. We show that location determinants vary according to the territorial level used in the analysis, so we conclude that the level at which we perform the investigation should be carefully selected. Estudio realizado a partir de una estancia en el Centro de Filosofia e Ciências Humanas de la Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, Brasil, durant entre septiembre y noviembre del 2005. El intercambio con los grupos de trabajo del Programa de Pós-Graduçao Interdisciplinar em Ciências Humanas (UFSCE-Brasil), se ha llevado a cabo con el objetivo de profundizar en las diferentes perspectivas teóricas y analíticas que orientan la reflexión sobre el papel crítico de los investigadores en el área de sociología del conocimiento ambiental científico. Esto ha permitido conocer experiencias-laboratorios de procesos participativos para planear intervenciones en áreas protegidas. Estas orientaciones conceptuales, epistemológicas y metodológicas ayudaran a la candidata a reforzar la aproximación de investigación participativa del proyecto “Avaluació social multicriteri per a la presa de decisions orientades a una gestió conservativa de sistemes agropecuaris i el desenvolupament sostenible de la zona seca i semi-seca del paisatge terrestre protegit de Miraflor-Moropotente (Nicaragua)” que es la línea del trabajo de PhD de la candidata. En especial, las reflexiones teóricas y metodológicas se han centrado en los siguientes temas: aproximación sistemática y basada en los actores para el análisis de sistemas complejos y incertezas, métodos participativos para las evaluaciones integradas de sustentabilidad que apoyan los procesos de toma de decisiones, o el nuevo papel de los investigadores sobre una perspectiva compleja de análisis y diálogo entre los conocimientos científicos y locales.

Noruega i Finlàndia representen les icones del model de l'estat del benestar, motiu pel qual molt sovint han estat considerades com a exemples a seguir en matèria de política social, econòmica i ecològica. A més, es tracta de països amb una experiència democràtica més dilatada que Catalunya. Per la seva banda, aquesta darrera forma part de la Mediterrània, una regió històricament marcada per la important intervenció humana sobre el medi i en permanent canvi. Els països nòrdics i Catalunya són exemples de realitats totalment diferents, no només per les característiques del territori sinó també a nivell social, cultural, econòmic, polític i ambiental. La comparació territorial i de sistemes de planejament d'uns i altres és l'objecte d'aquest estudi.

This paper describes the implications for Marxist thought of the work of Daron Acemoglu and James Robinson. In the first two periods of this they explained how the rise of democracy brought prosperity to Europe  and why the same process had not worked in Latin America because of the possibility of coups. The implication is that mass poverty can better be alleviated by safeguarding democracy rather than moving to socialism. In the last period A and R have formalized doubts about the efficacy of democracy in this role. The implication here is that Marxists should work to find a system of government that is immune to elite dominance. Hugo Chávez is taken as an example.

Recent concessions in France and in the US have resulted in a dramatic difference in the valuation placed on the toll roads; the price paid by the investors in France was twelve times current cash flow whereas investors paid sixty times current cash flow for the U.S. toll roads. In this paper we explore two questions: What accounts for the difference in these multiples, and what are the implications with respect to the public interest. Our analysis illustrates how structural and procedural decisions made by the public owner affect the concession price. Further, the terms of the concession have direct consequences that are enjoyed or borne by the various stakeholders of the toll road.
