Thermal analysis, powder diffraction, and Raman scattering as a function of the temperature were carried out on K2BeF4. Moreover, the crystal structure was determined at 293 K from powder diffraction. The compound shows a transition from Pna21 to Pnam space group at 921 K with a transition enthalpy of 5 kJ/mol. The transition is assumed to be first order because the compound shows metastability. Structurally and spectroscopically the transition is similar to those observed in (NH4)2SO4, which suggests that the low-temperature phase is ferroelectric. In order to confirm it, the spontaneous polarization has been computed using an ionic model.

We obtained Ba3Yb(BO3)3 single crystals by the flux method with solutions of the BaB2O4Na2OYb2O3 system. The evolution of the cell parameters with temperature shows a slope change at temperatures near 873 K, which may indicate a phase transition that is not observed by changes appearing in the x-ray powder patterns or by differential thermal analysis (DTA). The evolution of the diffraction patterns with the temperature shows incongruent melting at temperatures higher than 1473 K. DTA indicates that there is incongruent melting and this process is irreversible. Ba3Yb(BO3)3 has a wide transparency window from 247 to 3900 nm. We recorded optical absorption and emission spectra at room and low temperature, and we determined the splitting of Yb3+ ions. We used the reciprocity method to calculate the maximum emission cross section of 0.28 10-20 cm2 at 966 nm. The calculated lifetime of Yb3+ in Ba3Yb(BO3)3 is trad = 2.62 ms, while the measured lifetime is t = 3.80 ms.

This article presents the results of a study of the efficiency of silanation process of calcium phosphate glasses particles and its effect on the bioactivity behavior of glasspoly( methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) composites. Two different calcium phosphate glasses: 44.5CaO-44.5P2O5-11Na2O (BV11) and 44.5CaO-44.5P2O5-6Na2O-5TiO2 (G5) were synthesized and treated with silane coupling agent. The glasses obtained were characterized by Microprobe and BET while the efficiency of silanation process was determined using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) and Thermal Analysis (DTA and TG)techniques. The content of coupling agent chemically tightly bond to the silanated glasses ascended to 1.69 6 0.02 wt % for BV11sil glass and 0.93 6 0.01 wt % for G5sil glass. The in vitro bioactivity test carried out in Simulated Body Fluid (SBF) revealed certain bioactive performance with the use of both silanated glasses in a 30% (by weight) as filler of the PMMA composites because of a superficial deposition of an apatite-like layer with low content of CO3 22 and HPO4 22 in its structure after soaking for 30 days occurred. NdFeB melt-spun amorphous or partially amorphous alloys of four compositions were prepared. Their crystallization kinetics induced by thermal treatment was studied by differential scanning calorimetry and scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Scanning electron microscopy demonstrated that heterogeneous nucleation occurs preferentially at the ribbon surface which was in contact with the wheel. The explicit form of the kinetic equation that best describes the first stage of crystallization under high undercooling conditions was obtained for each alloy. From the crystallization results, the lower part of the experimental time-temperature-transformation curves was deduced for each alloy and extrapolated up to the high-temperature limit of their validity. Microstructural observations showed a typical size of the microcrystals obtained by heat treatment of ~100 nm. From the magnetic properties measured with a vibrating sample magnetometer, the same magnetic behavior of partially crystallized alloys is observed regardless of the temperature of annealing provided the same crystallization fraction, x, is achieved, at least for small values of x (typically ~10%).
