The thesis investigates the nature of the Purist discourse in photography, with the aim of unveiling its lack of a solid theoretical foundation and its unconscious content. Purism outlines the fact that photography is a unique craft, that may not borrow ideas from painting or any other art forms. What makes the Purist discourse suspect and attracts attention to its possible circular style? The fact that the views expressed by its supporters include a frenzied edge, an unnecessary ardor, a combative tone that discloses that there’s something hidden, something that doesn’t serve the purpose of presenting an unbiased philosophical claim

iii. Catheter-related bloodstream infection (CR-BSI) diagnosis usually involves catheter withdrawal. An alternative method for CR-BSI diagnosis is the differential time to positivity (DTP) between peripheral and catheter hub blood cultures. This study aims to validate the DTP method in short-term catheters. The results show a low prevalence of CR-BSI in the sample (8.4%). The DTP method is a valid alternative for CR-BSI diagnosis in those cases with monomicrobial cultures (80% sensitivity, 99% specificity, 92% positive predictive value, and 98% negative predictive value) and a cut-off point of 17.7 hours for positivity of hub blood culture may assess in CR-BSI diagnosis.

We derive the back reaction on the gravitational field of a straight cosmic string during its formation due to the gravitational coupling of the string to quantum matter fields. A very simple model of string formation is considered. The gravitational field of the string is computed in the linear approximation. The vacuum expectation value of the stress tensor of a massless scalar quantum field coupled to the string gravitational field is computed to one loop order. Finally, the back-reaction effect is obtained by solving perturbatively the semiclassical Einsteins equations.

Three molecular typing methods (pulsed-field electrophoresis, localization of the mecA gene, and probing the vicinity of mec) have been used for the characterization of 40 catheter-related isolates of coagulase-negative staphylococci (CNS) in 14 patients admitted to the same hospital. The 40 isolates yielded 14 different SmaI banding patterns and corresponding unique localizations of mecA, each associated with a unique ClaI mecA polymorph. In 6 of the 14 patients the contaminated skin at the catheter entry site was the source of 4 local infections and 2 cases of bacteremia. A contaminated hub was the origin of 2 local infections and 4 cases of bacteremia in 6 more patients. The remaining 2 patients had positive cultures from both skin and catheter hub. In each bacteremic patient, the CNS recovered from catheter-related sites (tip, skin, and/or hub) and the CNS recovered from blood were identical, but each of these matching isolates was unique to the particular patient, indicating a low rate of cross-infection from patient to patient. Although classical methods for typing CNS (e.g., biotype and antibiotype) are readily available for most hospital laboratories, they have limitations concerning reproducibility and discriminatory power. Molecular epidemiologic techniques can provide powerful support to traditional techniques in determining the etiologic role of CNS in the disease process

The battle between cities with regard to their creative possibilities has evolved into a process of multiplying ever-new images and variegated stories of urban attractiveness and success. Engineering “cool” images and “hot” stories about one’s city is now a central endeavor in the narratives of urban policy-making that center more and more on the idea of the entrepreneurial city. The making of an entrepreneurial image is enacted through various narrative genres that lie somewhere between place making and place marketing, between branding and boosting, between restoration and revanchism, between iconic architecture and mega-spectacle. This “imagineering” is not only part of the way cities try to (re)present themselves as entrepreneurial to various audiences through a real “image inflation” (Zukin, 2008, p. xii) but is 1 Forthcoming in: B. Lange,.A. Kalandides, B. Stoeber, I. Wellmann (Hrsg.) (2009): Governance der Kreativwirtschaft. Diagnosen und Handlungsoptionen. Transcript-Verlag, Bielefeld. 2 also inscribed in the various ways urban creativity and entrepreneurship can be studied, researched and imagined. In this chapter we aim to differentiate the political narratives of the entrepreneurial city as we emphasize the need to understand the politics of narration and make a plea for critical reflexivity in our forms of researching and theorizing. We will thus try to investigate how the politics of narration is intertwined with the narration of political concepts and will argue that the narrating of urban entrepreneurship can raise very different images and discourses of city life beyond those that are currently engineered. We will distinguish between a grand narrative, a counter-narrative, and an assemblage of more ambivalent little narratives, which we call prosaic narration. While the distinction between these three types might be seen as a bit too simple and “straight”, we believe that by juxtaposing these different forms of narration and alternating between them, we can help problematize the engineering of the city as entrepreneurial and imagine alternative views both of city life and of what is understood as its creativity.

One of the unresolved questions of modern physics is the nature of Dark Matter. Strong experimental evidences suggest that the presence of this elusive component in the energy budget of the Universe is quite significant, without, however, being able to provide conclusive information about its nature. The most plausible scenario is that of weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs), that includes a large class of non-baryonic Dark Matter candidates with a mass typically between few tens of GeV and few TeVs, and a cross section of the order of weak interactions. Search for Dark Matter particles using very high energy gamma-ray Cherenkov telescopes is based on the model that WIMPs can self-annihilate, leading to production of detectable species, like photons. These photons are very energetic, and since unreflected by the Universe's magnetic fields, they can be traced straight to the source of their creation. The downside of the approach is a great amount of background radiation, coming from the conventional astrophysical objects, that usually hides clear signals of the Dark Matter particle interactions. That is why good choice of the observational candidates is the crucial factor in search for Dark Matter. With MAGIC (Major Atmospheric Gamma-ray Imaging Cherenkov Telescopes), a two-telescope ground-based system located in La Palma, Canary Islands, we choose objects like dwarf spheroidal satellite galaxies of the Milky Way and galaxy clusters for our search. Our idea is to increase chances for WIMPs detection by pointing to objects that are relatively close, with great amount of Dark Matter and with as-little-as-possible pollution from the stars. At the moment, several observation projects are ongoing and analyses are being performed.

”compositions” is a new R-package for the analysis of compositional and positive data.It contains four classes corresponding to the four different types of compositional andpositive geometry (including the Aitchison geometry). It provides means for computation, plotting and high-level multivariate statistical analysis in all four geometries. These geometries are treated in an fully analogous way, based on the principle of workingin coordinates, and the object-oriented programming paradigm of R. In this way, called functions automatically select the most appropriate type of analysis as a functionof the geometry. The graphical capabilities include ternary diagrams and tetrahedrons, various compositional plots (boxplots, barplots, piecharts) and extensive graphical toolsfor principal components. Afterwards, ortion and proportion lines, straight lines andellipses in all geometries can be added to plots. The package is accompanied by ahands-on-introduction, documentation for every function, demos of the graphical capabilitiesand plenty of usage examples. It allows direct and parallel computation inall four vector spaces and provides the beginner with a copy-and-paste style of dataanalysis, while letting advanced users keep the functionality and customizability theydemand of R, as well as all necessary tools to add own analysis routines. A completeexample is included in the appendix

The symmetrical two-dimensional quantum wire with two straight leads joined to an arbitrarily shaped interior cavity is studied with emphasis on the single-mode approximation. It is found that for both transmission and bound-state problems the solution is equivalent to that for an energy-dependent one-dimensional square well. Quantum wires with a circular bend, and with single and double right-angle bends, are examined as examples. We also indicate a possible way to detect bound states in a double bend based on the experimental setup of Wu et al.

A covariant formalism is developed for describing perturbations on vacuum domain walls and strings. The treatment applies to arbitrary domain walls in (N+1)-dimensional flat spacetime, including the case of bubbles of a true vacuum nucleating in a false vacuum. Straight strings and planar walls in de Sitter space, as well as closed strings and walls nucleating during inflation, are also considered. Perturbations are represented by a scalar field defined on the unperturbed wall or string world sheet. In a number of interesting cases, this field has a tachyonic mass and a nonminimal coupling to the world-sheet curvature.

We develop a covariant quantum theory of fluctuations on vacuum domain walls and strings. The fluctuations are described by a scalar field defined on the classical world sheet of the defects. We consider the following cases: straight strings and planar walls in flat space, true vacuum bubbles nucleating in false vacuum, and strings and walls nucleating during inflation. The quantum state for the perturbations is constructed so that it respects the original symmetries of the classical solution. In particular, for the case of vacuum bubbles and nucleating strings and walls, the geometry of the world sheet is that of a lower-dimensional de Sitter space, and the problem reduces to the quantization of a scalar field of tachyonic mass in de Sitter space. In all cases, the root-mean-squared fluctuation is evaluated in detail, and the physical implications are briefly discussed.

Exchange of immature loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta) between the northern and southern regions of the western Mediterranean was investigated using data obtained from several Spanish tagging programmes. Tagged turtles ranged in straight carapace length from 23.0 to 74.0 cm. Thirty-six turtles were recaptured after an average interval of 390.5±462.6 days (SD). As the mean dispersal distance (MDD) of a turtle population that spreads over the western Mediterranean would stabilize after 117 days (CI 95%: 98 to 149), two analyses were conducted that included data from turtles recaptured after 98 and 149 days respectively. In both analyses, turtles were recaptured more often than expected in the same region where they had been tagged. No difference was found in either of the two regions between the average distance between the capture and recapture locations and the expected MDD if the turtles were to remain in the region where they were first captured. Turtles recaptured after 15 and 25 days respectively were excluded from the analysis to ensure data independence. The overall evidence indicates that immature turtles exhibit strong site fidelity to certain areas and that there is a strong barrier to dispersal between the northern and southern parts of the western Mediterranean. Therefore, loggerhead turtles in the western Mediterranean should be split into at least two management units.
On the existence of bi-pyramidal central configurations of the n + 2-body problem with an n-gon base
Resumo:
Abstract. In this paper we prove the existence of central con gurations of the n + 2{body problem where n equal masses are located at the vertices of a regular n{gon and the remaining 2 masses, which are not necessarily equal, are located on the straight line orthogonal to the plane containing the n{gon passing through its center. Here this kind of central con gurations is called bi{pyramidal central con gurations. In particular, we prove that if the masses mn+1 and mn+2 and their positions satisfy convenient relations, then the con guration is central. We give explicitly those relations.
