El secreto del Unicornio es la décima novela gráfica de la serie Las aventuras de Tintín,3 del autor belga Georges Prosper Remi, más conocido por su seudónimo Hergé. El relato que ahora presentamos5 es la primera parte del que le sigue, El tesoro de Rackham el Rojo, y cinematográficamente corresponderá a una futura segunda parte del filme. Tintín, joven reportero belga, se mete a menudo en problemas por defender causas justas.

Greek by Steven Berkoff (1980): The Risky Transformation of Sophocles’ Oedipus Rex into a Love Story

[eng] Can Sophocles’ Oedipus Rex really be transformed into a love story, as in Steven Berkoff’s drama entitled Greek? This article will show that, although Greek may be viewed by some critics as simply a provocative drama by no means intended to justify incest, directors, actors and critics in the end become enthralled by the powerful love story that ensues between Eddy and his wife and mother. This perspective reveals that Berkoff’s adaptation, intended to portray the social degradation of 1980s Great Britain, is in reality a quite risky proposition since it represents a flat denial of the tragic awareness of contemporary men and women. However, if this is the case, the audience, apart from enjoying the performance of Berkoff’s drama, might question, even from a non-fundamentalist perspective within the classical tradition, to what degree it makes sense to take inspiration from a text by Sophocles that precisely illustrates the great tragic awareness of the ancient Greeks.

Tot i que alguns crítics llegeixen Greek només com un drama provocador que de cap manera intenta justificar l’incest, directors, actors i crítics resten finalment captivats per la impactant història d’amor entre Eddy i la seva esposa-mare. Això demostraria que l’adaptació de Berkoff, pensada per a il·lustrar la degradació social de la Gran Bretanya dels 80s, esdevé una proposta arriscada, car significa negar de fet la consciència tràgica dels homes i dones contemporanis. Tanmateix, si aquest és el cas, lectors i espectadors, a banda de l’indubtable plaer d’assistir a la representació de Greek, poden preguntar-se, fins i tot des d’una perspectiva no fonamentalista de la tradició clàssica, si té sentit inspirar-se en el text de Sòfocles, el qual mostra precisament la gran consciència tràgica dels grecs.

Escenografia i participació en el teatre festiu tradicional: la Festa de l’Ós, la Dansa de la Mort i el Salt de Plens

Anàlisi contemporani de la teatralitat i l’espectacularitat de tres festes populars: la Festa de l’Ós de Prats de Molló, de la Dansa de la Mort de Verges i del Salt de Plens de la Patum de Berga. S’aprofundeix en l’escenografia, la plàstica, de les tres figures complexes que s’hi representen: “la bèstia” en la Festa de l’Ós, “la Mort” en la Dansa de la Mort i “el geni de la Naturalesa” en el salt de Plens. El que es pretén amb aquest estudi és observar fins a quin punt la plasticitat de la indumentària i de l’escenografia influencia en la relació actuant-espectador i com l’estètica de cadascuna d’aquestes obres esdevé una eina socialitzadora.

Computing hypergraph width measures exactly

Hypergraph width measures are a class of hypergraph invariants important in studying the complexity of constraint satisfaction problems (CSPs). We present a general exact exponential algorithm for a large variety of these measures. A connection between these and tree decompositions is established. This enables us to almost seamlessly adapt the combinatorial and algorithmic results known for tree decompositions of graphs to the case of hypergraphs and obtain fast exact algorithms. As a consequence, we provide algorithms which, given a hypergraph H on n vertices and m hyperedges, compute the generalized hypertree-width of H in time O*(2n) and compute the fractional hypertree-width of H in time O(1.734601n.m).1

Estudio retrospectivo de la influencia de la respuesta al tratamiento quimioterápico de primera línea en pacientes con cáncer no microcítico de pulmón sobre la respuesta a la administración de factores estimulantes de la eritropoyesis en la anemia inducida por quimioterapia

S’analitza de manera retrospectiva la relació entre la resposta a la quimioteràpia i la milloria de l’anèmia induïda per la quimioteràpia amb factors estimulants de la eritropoesi en 57 pacients amb carcinoma no microcític de pulmó avançat que presentaren anèmia durant el tractament amb quimioteràpia. Els pacients amb progressió desenvoluparen anèmia significativament abans que els responedors y presentaren de forma significativa una menor tassa de resposta al tractament amb factors estimulants de la eritropoesi. La resposta a la quimioteràpia té un impacte directe en la efectivitat del tractament de la anèmia amb factors estimulant de la eritropoesi. Aquesta correlació pot valdre com marcador subrogat de resposta a la quimioteràpia. Smarthistory.org is a proven, sustainable model for open educational resources in the Humanities. We discuss lessons learned during its agile development. Smarthistory.org is a free, creative-commons licensed, multi-media web-book designed as a dynamic enhancement or substitute for the traditional art history textbook. It uses conversation instead of the impersonal voice of the typical textbook in-order to reveal disagreement, emotion, and the experience of looking. The listener remains engaged with both the content and the interaction of the speakers. These conversations model close looking and a willingness to encounter and engage the unfamiliar. Smarthistory takes the inherent dialogic and multimedia nature of the web and uses it as a pedagogical method. This extendable Humanities framework uses an open-source content management system making Smarthistory inexpensive to create, and easy to manage and update. Its chronological timeline/chapter-based format integrates new contributions into a single historical framework, a structure applicable across the Humanities.

Improving gene annotation using peptide mass spectrometry

Annotation of protein-coding genes is a key goal of genome sequencing projects. In spite of tremendous recent advances in computational gene finding, comprehensive annotation remains a challenge. Peptide mass spectrometry is a powerful tool for researching the dynamic proteome and suggests an attractive approach to discover and validate protein-coding genes. We present algorithms to construct and efficiently search spectra against a genomic database, with no prior knowledge of encoded proteins. By searching a corpus of 18.5 million tandem mass spectra (MS/MS) from human proteomic samples, we validate 39,000 exons and 11,000 introns at the level of translation. We present translation-level evidence for novel or extended exons in 16 genes, confirm translation of 224 hypothetical proteins, and discover or confirm over 40 alternative splicing events. Polymorphisms are efficiently encoded in our database, allowing us to observe variant alleles for 308 coding SNPs. Finally, we demonstrate the use of mass spectrometry to improve automated gene prediction, adding 800 correct exons to our predictions using a simple rescoring strategy. Our results demonstrate that proteomic profiling should play a role in any genome sequencing project.

@neurIST infrastructure for advanced disease management through integration of heterogeneous data, computing, and complex processing services

The increasing volume of data describing humandisease processes and the growing complexity of understanding, managing, and sharing such data presents a huge challenge for clinicians and medical researchers. This paper presents the@neurIST system, which provides an infrastructure for biomedical research while aiding clinical care, by bringing together heterogeneous data and complex processing and computing services. Although @neurIST targets the investigation and treatment of cerebral aneurysms, the system’s architecture is generic enough that it could be adapted to the treatment of other diseases.Innovations in @neurIST include confining the patient data pertaining to aneurysms inside a single environment that offers cliniciansthe tools to analyze and interpret patient data and make use of knowledge-based guidance in planning their treatment. Medicalresearchers gain access to a critical mass of aneurysm related data due to the system’s ability to federate distributed informationsources. A semantically mediated grid infrastructure ensures that both clinicians and researchers are able to seamlessly access andwork on data that is distributed across multiple sites in a secure way in addition to providing computing resources on demand forperforming computationally intensive simulations for treatment planning and research.

Macroprudential policy, countercyclical bank capital buffers and credit supply: Evidence from the Spanish dynamic provisioning experiments

We analyze the impact of countercyclical capital buffers held by banks on the supplyof credit to firms and their subsequent performance. Spain introduced dynamicprovisioning unrelated to specific bank loan losses in 2000 and modified its formulaparameters in 2005 and 2008. In each case, individual banks were impacteddifferently. The resultant bank-specific shocks to capital buffers, coupled withcomprehensive bank-, firm-, loan-, and loan application-level data, allow us toidentify its impact on the supply of credit and on real activity. Our estimates showthat countercyclical dynamic provisioning smooths cycles in the supply of credit andin bad times upholds firm financing and performance.

The evolution of personally disadvantageous punishment among cofoundresses of the ant Acromyrmex versicolor

Cofoundresses of the desert fungus garden ant Acromyrmex versicolorexhibit a forager specialist who subsumes all foraging risk priorto first worker eclosion (Rissing et al. 1989). In an experimentdesigned to mimic a "cheater" who refuses foraging assignment whenher lot, cofoundresses delayed/failed to replace their forager,often leading to demise of their garden (Rissing et al. 1996). Thecheater on task assignment is harmed, but so too is the punisher,as all will die without a healthy garden. In this paper we studythrough simulation the cofoundress interaction with haploid, asexualgenotypes which either replace a cheater or not (punishment), underboth foundress viscosity (likely for A. versicolor) and randomassortment. We find replacement superior to punishment only whenthere is no foraging risk and cheating is not costly to groupsurvival. Generally, punishment is evolutionarily superior,especially as forager risk increases, under both forms of dispersal.

Els noms dels massos de Bordils (Gironès)

Estudi diacrònic i present dels noms de mas de la població de Bordils (Gironès). Cada nom recull la seva situació i el seu possible orígen etimològic. Es tractava de demostrar que és freqüent que un mas canviï de nom amb el canvi de propietaris, és a dir, que toponímia i antroponímia van estretament lligades. S'ha aplicat l'habitual en recerca toponímica: treball de camp amb entrevístes a habitants del poble i recerca d'arxiu amb documentació provinent de l'Arxiu Històric de Girona, l'Arxiu Municipal i Parroquial de Bordils. La recollida d'informació s'ha complementat amb la consulta a bibliografia fonamental en l'àmbit de l'onomàstica ( Coromines, Moreu-Rey, Alcover i Moll... ) per poder realitzar l'estudi de 52 topònims referits a 30 masos diferents. S’ha esbrinat l'existència diacrònica d'alguns noms de masos que a l'acutalitat han variat; demostrant que en algun cas, un mas es coneix amb més d'un nom. També s’ha pogut esbrinar que els noms de persona (llinatges) són la font més freqüent a l'hora de donar nom als masos.

Una nova fita de termenal entre Solius i Sant Feliu

El foc que el 31 de gener d’enguany cremà el bosc d’una part del sector oriental de l’Ardenya va deixar al descobert, entre altres coses, una possible fita delimitativa de l’antic termenal de Solius (avui Santa Cristina d’Aro) i de Sant Feliu. Aquest molló no va ésser localitzat i, per tant, no representat en el treball que el signant va desenvolupar amb Lluís Esteva. Avui es dóna a conèixer per a futurs estudiosos del tema tot seguint les mateixes pautes de la investigació esmentada
