Man-bites-dog business cycles

The newsworthiness of an event is partly determined by how unusual it isand this paper investigates the business cycle implications of this fact. In particular, weanalyze the consequences of information structures in which some types of signals are morelikely to be observed after unusual events. Such signals may increase both uncertainty anddisagreement among agents and when embedded in a simple business cycle model, can helpus understand why we observe (i) occasional large changes in macro economic aggregatevariables without a correspondingly large change in underlying fundamentals (ii) persistentperiods of high macroeconomic volatility and (iii) a positive correlation between absolutechanges in macro variables and the cross-sectional dispersion of expectations as measuredby survey data. These results are consequences of optimal updating by agents when theavailability of some signals is positively correlated with tail-events. The model is estimatedby likelihood based methods using individual survey responses and a quarterly time seriesof total factor productivity along with standard aggregate time series. The estimated modelsuggests that there have been episodes in recent US history when the impact on outputof innovations to productivity of a given magnitude was more than eight times as largecompared to other times.

Caracterització de la població de mosquit tigre asiàtic (Aedes albopictus) al municipi de Rubí i anàlisi de l'impacte ambiental associat en el medi socioeconòmic

Aedes albopictus (Skuse,1894) va ser detectada a Catalunya l’any 2004 a Sant Cugat del Vallés. El mosquit tigre asiàtic és espècie invasora que causa impactes negatius a nivell econòmic, sociosanitàri i mediambiental, principalment per les seves molestes picades però també pel potencial risc que té com a vector transmissor de diverses malalties com la febre groga i el dengue. En aquest treball és vol avaluar i estudiar la situació actual de l’espècie al municipi de Rubí (Vallés Occidental) a través de l’estudi per paranys d’oviposició. També és vol avaluar l’impacte que el mosquit tigre asiàtic té en el medi socioeconòmic a través de la metodologia de experiments d’elecció.

The reproductive cycle of Ophichthus rufus (Pisces: Anguilliformes) in the NW Mediterranean

The reproductive biology of the Mediterranean Snake cel, Ophichthus Rufus (Ophichthidae), was studied on the basis of microscopic and macroscopic analysis. Results show that O.rufus is an oviparous species with a group synchronous ovary type. The maturation process of the gonads starts in December and progress until August, when ovulation and a pawing take place. It is a fractional spawned with buoyant eggs. Potential annual fecundity estimates ranged from 1426 to 23.605 oocytes. Except for small sizes, a clear predominance of females was observed
