Firm dynamics support the importance of the embodied question

This paper contributes to the literature on both embodied technical progress and firm dynamics, by formulating an endogenous growth model where selection and imitation play a fundamental role in helping capital good producers to learn about the productivity of technologies embodied in new plants. By calibrating the model to some key aggregates particularly relevant for the embodied capital literature, among them the growth rate of the relative investment price, the model quantitatively replicates the main facts associated to firm dynamics, such as the entry rate and the tail index of the establishment size distribution. In line with the previous literature, it also predicts a contribution to productivity growth of embodied technical progress and selection of around 60%

QRP: An improved secure authentication method using QR codes

This paper presents the design and implementation of QRP, an open source proof-of-concept authentication system that uses a two-factorauthentication by combining a password and a camera-equipped mobile phone, acting as an authentication token. QRP is extremely secure asall the sensitive information stored and transmitted is encrypted, but it isalso an easy to use and cost-efficient solution. QRP is portable and can be used securely in untrusted computers. Finally, QRP is able to successfully authenticate even when the phone is offline.

Vortices and extreme black holes: The question of flux expulsion

It has been claimed that extreme black holes exhibit a phenomenon of flux expulsion for Abelian Higgs vortices, irrespective of the relative width of the vortex to the black hole. Recent work by two of the authors showed a subtlety in the treatment of the event horizon, which cast doubt on this claim. We analyze in detail the vortexextreme black hole system, showing that, while flux expulsion can occur, it does not do so in all cases. We give analytic proofs for both expulsion and penetration of flux, in each case deriving a bound for that behavior. We also present extensive numerical work backing up, and refining, these claims, and showing in detail how a vortex can end on a black hole in all situations. We also calculate the back reaction of the vortex on the geometry, and comment on the more general vortexblack hole system.

Question Waves: A multicast query routing algorithm for social search

This paper describes Question Waves, an algorithm that can be applied to social search protocols, such as Asknext or Sixearch. In this model, the queries are propagated through the social network, with faster propagation through more trustable acquaintances. Question Waves uses local information to make decisions and obtain an answer ranking. With Question Waves, the answers that arrive first are the most likely to be relevant, and we computed the correlation of answer relevance with the order of arrival to demonstrate this result. We obtained correlations equivalent to the heuristics that use global knowledge, such as profile similarity among users or the expertise value of an agent. Because Question Waves is compatible with the social search protocol Asknext, it is possible to stop a search when enough relevant answers have been found; additionally, stopping the search early only introduces a minimal risk of not obtaining the best possible answer. Els codis QR: una eina per millorar l'hàbit lector dels alumnes

Les pràctiques educatives que es basen en una metodologia on s’integren les noves Tecnologies de la Informació i la Comunicació (TIC) són cada cop més influents en l’àmbit educatiu, ja que, ens acosten a la realitat de l’època en què vivim, la societat de la informació i l’alfabetització digital. Així, en aquest estudi s’investiga la motivació i l’adquisició de l’hàbit lector a través dels codis QR en un grup d’infants d’edats compreses entre cinc i sis anys d’Educació Infantil. A partir dels instruments de recollida de dades, com ara, l’entrevista, l’observació, els qüestionaris i la pròpia intervenció educativa, podem saber que la motivació de llegir contes i d’utilitzar les noves tecnologies augmenta en l’actitud dels infants. Pel que fa a l’aprenentatge i adquisició de l’hàbit lector, arribem a la conclusió que és un procés llarg i, segons l’entorn que té l’infant, hi influeix de manera positiva o negativa.

Social Presence Approach Within the Question and Answering eLearning Model: An Experiment with a Multi-Agent System

The model of Questions Answering (Q&A) for eLearning is based on collaborative learning through questions that are posed by students and their answers to that questions which are given by peers, in contrast with the classical model in which students ask questions to the teacher only. In this proposal we extend the Q&A model including the social presence concept and a quantitative measure of it is proposed; besides it is considered the evolution of the resulting Q&A social network after the inclusion of the social presence and taking into account the feedback on questions posed by students and answered by peers. The social network behaviorwas simulated using a Multi-Agent System to compare the proposed social presence model with the classical and the Q&A models
