Long-run Inflation-Unemployment Dynamics: The Spanish Phillips Curve and Economic Policy

This paper takes a new look at the long-run dynamics of inflation and unemployment in response to permanent changes in the growth rate of the money supply. We examine the Phillips curve from the perspective of what we call "frictional growth", i.e. the interaction between money growth and nominal frictions. After presenting theoretical models of this phenomenon, we construct an empirical model of the Spanish economy and, in this context, we evaluate the long-run inflation-unemployment trade for Spain and examine how recent policy changes have afected it.

Inflation dynamics and the New Keynesian Phillips curve in EU-4

The paper seeks to shed light on inflation dynamics of four new EU member states: the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia. To this end, the New Keynesian Phillips curve augmented for open economies is estimated and additional statistical tests applied. We find the following. (1) The claim of New Keynesians that the real marginal cost is the main inflation-forcing variable is fragile. (2) Inflation seems to be driven by external factors. (3) Although inflation holds a forward-looking component, the backward-looking component is substantial. An intuitive explanation for higher inflation persistence may be rather adaptive than rational price setting of local firms.

El gran juego: la guerra secreta por el control de Asia Central (1836-1919)

Tot i l'extensió del conflicte, Afganistan es va erigir com el punt clau més rellevant al voltant del qual l'Imperi rus i el britànic van desenvolupar les seves intrigues. Els dos poders europeus, amb els seus respectius objectius en ment, no van dubtar a dur a terme un dels majors desplegaments estratègics mai vist a la zona, valent-se, a més dels seus efectius, dels habitants asiàtics com peons al tauler del seu joc i marcant profundament el futur de les nacions centreasiàtiques, així com establint un precedent en la manera de fer la guerra on la victòria d'una facció sobre una altra mai estaria clara.

The return of the wage Phillips curve

The standard New Keynesian model with staggered wage settingis shown to imply a simple dynamic relation between wage inflationand unemployment. Under some assumptions, that relation takes aform similar to that found in empirical wage equations-starting fromPhillips' (1958) original work-and may thus be viewed as providingsome theoretical foundations to the latter. The structural wage equation derived here is shown to account reasonably well for the comovement of wage inflation and the unemployment rate in the U.S. economy, even under the strong assumption of a constant natural rate ofunemployment.

Comment to "Weak instruments robust tests in GMM and the New Keynesian Phillips curve" by Frank Kleibergen and Sophocles Mavroeidis

I discuss the identifiability of a structural New Keynesian Phillips curve when it is embedded in a small scale dynamic stochastic general equilibrium model. Identification problems emerge because not all the structural parameters are recoverable from the semi-structural ones and because the objective functions I consider are poorly behaved. The solution and the moment mappings are responsible for the problems.

Basándose en un análisis minucioso de los textos de Lewis, el autor propone interpretar la oposición Lewis / Gresham como la traducción en la vida real de la oposición entre los temperamentos platónico o idealista y aristotélico o materialista que ya mencionaba Coleridge. En cualquier caso, son muchas las referencias clásicas que hay que tener en cuenta si se quiere comprender hasta qué punto el cristianismo de Lewis es también un cristianismo clásico, es decir grecolatino.

Classical parameters of Shadowlands by Richard Attenborough (On C. S. Lewis's Life and Work)

The aim of this article is to show the classical parameters of Shadowlands by R. Attenborough, with a screenplay by W. Nicholson, on C. S. Lewis's life and work. Based upon an accurate reading of Lewis's works, the author of this article proposes to interpret the opposition Lewis / Gresham as the translation into the real life of the opposition between the Platonic or idealistic and the Aristotelian or materialistic temperaments which was already maintained by Coleridge. In any case, there are many classical references which must be taken into account in order to understand to what extent C. S. Lewis's Christianity is also a classic Christianity, that is, a Greek and Latin one.

Richard Rorty i una aproximació pragmatista al liberalisme polític de John Rawls

Aquest article es proposa explorar la possibilitat d'apropar a la concepció del liberalisme polític metafilosòfic de John Rawls des del punt de vista pragmatista de Richard Rorty. La proposta està motivada per les similituds que es poden observar entre elles respecte de la finalitat i la sortida d'una concepció política. El resultat final de l'article és ambigua: d'una banda, no sembla tan descabellat afirmar que la teoria de Rawls es pot llegir sense més dificultats des d'una perspectiva pragmàtica, d'altra banda, hi ha alguns aspectes importants en els quals un liberalisme polític de Rawls segueix sent incompatible amb una concepció política de Rorty
