La serie editada por la Universidad de Murcia, especializada en trabajos sobre la antigüedad tardía y cristianismo, publica este nuevo libro que aborda la presencia de Bizancio en Hispania. Se trata de un tema de larga trayectoria historiográfica en la investigación histórica en España, que desde el estudio de M. Vallejo Girvés en 1993 se ha visto renovado y enriquecido con nuevas líneas interpretativas que persiguen la contextualización de las referencias aportadas por las fuentes escritas y, al mismo tiempo, la ampliación de las perspectivas de estudio con diversos argumentos de análisis, como es la discusión abierta en torno al componente social del proceso.

Resveratrol has been shown to have beneficial effects on diseases related to oxidant and/or inflammatory processes and extends the lifespan of simple organisms including rodents. The objective of the present study was to estimate the dietary intake of resveratrol and piceid (R&P) present in foods, and to identify the principal dietary sources of these compounds in the Spanish adult population. For this purpose, a food composition database (FCDB) of R&P in Spanish foods was compiled. The study included 40 685 subjects aged 3564 years from northern and southern regions of Spain who were included in the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC)-Spain cohort. Usual food intake was assessed by personal interviews using a computerised version of a validated diet history method. An FCDB with 160 items was compiled. The estimated median and mean of R&P intake were 100 and 933 mg/d respectively. Approximately, 32% of the population did not consume RΠ The most abundant of the four stilbenes studied was trans-piceid (53·6 %), followed by trans-resveratrol (20·9 %), cis-piceid (19·3 %) and cis-resveratrol (6·2 %). The most important source of R&P was wines (98·4 %) and grape and grape juices (1·6 %), whereas peanuts, pistachios and berries contributed to less than 0·01 %. For this reason the pattern of intake of R&P was similar to the wine pattern. This is the first time that R&P intake has been estimated in a Mediterranean country.

L’objecte d’estudi d’aquest projecte final, és el mercat del vi espanyol als Estats Units. Es tracta d’un mercat relativament jove degut a que la cultura del vi per un nord-americà amb una renda mitja es nova. Encara així, els Estats Units es el tercer país amb major consum per volum del món. Per tal de poder entendre millor aquest mercat, s’estudiaran les diferents característiques del país, les regions on es produeix el vi i la seva distribució i els diferents agents que s’impliquen en aquest procés en el país. Un cop analitzat els aspectes econòmics i les característiques més importants d’Estats Units, es realitzarà una anàlisi de l’oferta i de la demanda del sector del vi en aquest país per poder realitzar una comparativa més endavant amb el mercat del vi espanyol i de la perspectiva que es té a Estats Units sobre aquest tipus de vi. Un aspecte molt important que s’ha observat es la dificultat d’accés al mercat del vi a Estats Units. Per això, s’ha dedicat un capítol sencer a analitzar els diferents controls i regulacions que s’han de tenir en compte alhora d’importar vi a aquest país americà. Per últim, es realitza un anàlisi del mercat del vi espanyol i la perspectiva que es té dels vins espanyols a Estats Units. En aquest capítol s’analitzarà sobre tot la producció, el consum i les exportacions espanyoles i s’explicarà amb detall el concepte de denominacions d’origen.

Background: Nolz1 is a zinc finger transcription factor whose expression is enriched in the lateral ganglionic eminence (LGE), although its function is still unknown. Results: Here we analyze the role of Nolz1 during LGE development. We show that Nolz1 expression is high in proliferating neural progenitor cells (NPCs) of the LGE subventricular zone. In addition, low levels of Nolz1 are detected in the mantle zone, as well as in the adult striatum. Similarly, Nolz1 is highly expressed in proliferating LGE-derived NPC cultures, but its levels rapidly decrease upon cell differentiation, pointing to a role of Nolz1 in the control of NPC proliferation and/or differentiation. In agreement with this hypothesis, we find that Nolz1 over-expression promotes cell cycle exit of NPCs in neurosphere cultures and negatively regulates proliferation in telencephalic organotypic cultures. Within LGE primary cultures, Nolz1 over-expression promotes the acquisition of a neuronal phenotype, since it increases the number of β-III tubulin (Tuj1)- and microtubule-associated protein (MAP)2-positive neurons, and inhibits astrocyte generation and/or differentiation. Retinoic acid (RA) is one of the most important morphogens involved in striatal neurogenesis, and regulates Nolz1 expression in different systems. Here we show that Nolz1 also responds to this morphogen in E12.5 LGE-derived cell cultures. However, Nolz1 expression is not regulated by RA in E14.5 LGE-derived cell cultures, nor is it affected during LGE development in mouse models that present decreased RA levels. Interestingly, we find that Gsx2, which is necessary for normal RA signaling during LGE development, is also required for Nolz1 expression, which is lost in Gsx2 knockout mice. These findings suggest that Nolz1 might act downstream of Gsx2 to regulate RA-induced neurogenesis. Keeping with this hypothesis, we show that Nolz1 induces the selective expression of the RA receptor (RAR)β without altering RARα or RARγ. In addition, Nozl1 over-expression increases RA signaling since it stimulates the RA response element. This RA signaling is essential for Nolz1-induced neurogenesis, which is impaired in a RA-free environment or in the presence of a RAR inverse agonist. It has been proposed that Drosophila Gsx2 and Nolz1 homologues could cooperate with the transcriptional co-repressors Groucho-TLE to regulate cell proliferation. In agreement with this view, we show that Nolz1 could act in collaboration with TLE-4, as they are expressed at the same time in NPC cultures and during mouse development. Conclusions: Nolz1 promotes RA signaling in the LGE, contributing to the striatal neurogenesis during development.

Aquest projecte forma part d’un estudi sobre l’eliminació de metalls pesants utilitzant com aadsorbents residus d’indústries agroalimentàries, que des de fa uns quants anys està duent aterme el grup de Metalls i Medi Ambient (MiMA) del Departament d’Enginyeria Química,Agrària i Tecnologia Agroalimentària de la Universitat de Girona. L’objecte del treball és parametritzar un procés basat en marro de cafè que inclouetapes de reducció/adsorció i precipitació per al tractament d’aigües residuals quecontenen Cr(VI) i altres metalls. La parametrització permetrà conèixer en quinmoment s’ha assolit la reducció total del Cr(VI) en la primera etapa del tractament perpoder passar a una segona etapa d’eliminació de la resta dels metalls presents en solució

Chromium (VI) removal and its reduction to chromium (III) from aqueous solution by untreated and heat-treated Quercus cerris and heat-treated Quercus suber black agglomerate cork granules was investigated. Initial screening studies revealed that among the sorbents tested, untreated Q. cerris and Q. suber black agglomerate are the most efficient in the removal of Cr(VI) ions and were selected for adsorption essays. Heat treatment adversely affected chromium adsorption and chromium (VI) reduction in Q. cerris cork. The highest metal uptake was found at pH 3.0 for Q. cerris and pH 2.0 for black agglomerate. The experimental data fitted the Langmuir model and the calculated qmax was 22.98 mg/g in black agglomerate and 21.69 mg/g in untreated Q. cerris cork. The FTIR results indicated that while in black agglomerate, lignin is the sole component responsible for Cr(VI) sorption, and in untreated Q. cerris cork, suberin and polysaccharides also play a significant role on the sorption. The SEM-EDX results imply that chromium has a homogenous distribution within both cork granules. Also, phloemic residues in Q. cerris granules showed higher chromium concentration. The results obtained in this study show that untreated Q. cerris and black agglomerate cork granules can be an effective and economical alternative to more costly materials for the treatment of liquid wastes containing chromium
