Materials selection for superheater tubes in municipal solid waste incineration plants

Corrosion reduces the lifetime of municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) superheater tubes more than any other cause. It can be minimized by the careful selection of those materials that are most resistant to corrosion under operating conditions. Since thousands of different materials are already known and many more are developed every year, here the selection methodology developed by Prof. Ashby of the University of Cambridge was used to evaluate the performance of different materials to be used as MSWI superheater tubes. The proposed materials can operate at steam pressures and temperatures over 40 bars and 400ºC, respectively. Two case studies are presented: one makes a balanced selection between mechanical properties and cost per thermal unit; and the other focuses on increasing tube lifetime. The balanced selection showed that AISI 410 martensitic stainless steel (wrought, hard tempered) is the best candidate with a good combination of corrosion resistance, a relatively low price (0.83-0.92 e/kg) and a good thermal conductivity (23-27 W/m K). Meanwhile, Nitronic 50/XM-19 stainless steel is the most promising candidate for longterm selection, as it presents high corrosion resistance with a relatively low price (4.86-5.14 e/kg) compared to Ni-alloys.

Aquest treball és una creació d’un projecte empresarial, per tal d’analitzar la viabilitat, examinar els objectius i descobrir els inconvenients de la creació d’una empresa. En aquest cas es tracta de crear un cementiri i vetlla d’animals de tot tipus, simulant el comiat que es realitza a les persones estimades, però destinat a les nostres mascotes, amb un servei de qualitat, serietat, responsabilitat i adequat als usuaris i clients. Es tracta d’una empresa que s’encarregarà de la recollida de l’animal, l’acondicionament per a la vetlla, la cerimònia de comiat, la impressió dels panegírics, l’obtenció d’objectes per recordar-ho, les decoracions florals o similars, la venta de plaquetes, tombes, gerros... segons el tipus de mètode seleccionat per a l’enterrament, així com la prestació d altres serveis addicionals que s’adaptin a les necessitats específiques dels usuaris/clients per tal de cobrir la demanda actual al sector. Es tracta d’una iniciativa destinada a les persones que necessiten desprendre s de les restes de les seves mascotes, després de la seva defunció, que volen oferir un comiat proper i afectuós a les seves mascotes.

Necrópolis de incineración y prácticas funerarias en el noreste de la Penínnsula Ibérica durante el Bronce Final y la Primera Edad del Hierro

[spa]En este artículo presentamos un estado de la cuestión sobre las necrópolis de incineración del Bronce Final y Primera Edad del Hierro en el noreste peninsular. Para ello, analizamos el ritual funerario, la organización interna de las necrópolis y muy especialmente su arquitectura funeraria para, en base a ella, caracterizar el proceso de regionalización que se observa en el territorio.

Determination of corn stalk fibers' strength through modeling of the mechanical properties of its composites

Worldwide cultivation of corn is expanding, due in part to the increasing production of bioethanol. In consequence, huge amounts of corn stalks residues are been produced. Instead of incineration, we transformed the corn stalks into a semichemical pulp and successfully applied it as reinforcement in polypropylene composites. PP composites reinforced with 40% wt corn stalk single fibers were prepared, and their mechanical properties were evaluated. Through mechanical properties modeling of the composites, the intrinsic tensile strength of the cellulosic fibers that constitute the corn stalk have been determined
