Standardized evaluation methodology and reference database for evaluating IVUS image segmentation

This paper describes an evaluation framework that allows a standardized and quantitative comparison of IVUS lumen and media segmentation algorithms. This framework has been introduced at the MICCAI 2011 Computing and Visualization for (Intra)Vascular Imaging (CVII) workshop, comparing the results of eight teams that participated. We describe the available data-base comprising of multi-center, multi-vendor and multi-frequency IVUS datasets, their acquisition, the creation of the reference standard and the evaluation measures. The approaches address segmentation of the lumen, the media, or both borders; semi- or fully-automatic operation; and 2-D vs. 3-D methodology. Three performance measures for quantitative analysis have been proposed. The results of the evaluation indicate that segmentation of the vessel lumen and media is possible with an accuracy that is comparable to manual annotation when semi-automatic methods are used, as well as encouraging results can be obtained also in case of fully-automatic segmentation. The analysis performed in this paper also highlights the challenges in IVUS segmentation that remains to be solved.

Amb el present treball es vol aprofundir en la manera que influeix l’organització d’espais, d’ambients i les característiques dels materials en el procés educatiu. A partir d’una recerca teòrica en base les necessitats educatives de la societat actual, les necessitats evolutives dels infants, i en base a l’observació i anàlisi d’escoles reggianes i catalanes referents que tenen en compte com a agent educador l’espai, els ambients i els materials, es volen reunir quines són les característiques bàsiques de l’organització dels espais, ambients i materials per garantir una educació de qualitat a l’etapa infantil (3-6).

En el projecte Disseny i càlcul d’un pont grua birrail de 6,3+6,3tones amb les corresponents bigues carril, s’han buscat dos objectius. El primer d’ells, fer una recopilació acurada de la extensa normativa que afecta a aquesta tipologia d’aparells d’elevació. El segon, realitzar el disseny del pont grua seguint la normativa vigent i redactar un projecte complet amb el qual es podria realitzar la fabricació i el muntatge de l’aparell

Applying recommendations to aligncompetences, methodology and assessment in Telematics, Computing and Electronic Engineering courses

The alignment between competences, teaching-learning methodologies and assessment is a key element of the European Higher Education Area. This paper presents the efforts carried out by six Telematics, Computer Science and Electronic Engineering Education teachers towards achieving this alignment in their subjects. In a joint work with pedagogues, a set of recommended actions were identified. A selection of these actions were applied and evaluated in the six subjects. The cross-analysis of the results indicate that the actions allow students to better understand the methodologies and assessment planned for the subjects, facilitate (self-) regulation and increase students’ involvement in the subjects.

Las instalaciones de vídeo de la primera exposición de Freya Powell en Barcelona invitan a una meditación sobre los vínculos entre la memoria y el archivo, el registro, el repertorio y las huellas de la Historia. En esta exposición se tensa un hilo entre la memoria de los condenados a muerte norteamericanos, la memoria de la Segunda Guerra Mundial, la de la propia artista y los diferentes mapas del mundo creados por la historia colonial. Es un hilo que pregunta por nuestro vínculo no solo con las voces y las palabras archivadas, sino con ésas que queremos recoger y recibir.

Cycle: White under Black. Works from the imperceptible / 3. Freya Powell: I’ll smile and I’m not sad, and other past presents

The video installations of Freya Powell's first exhibition in Barcelona call for an analysis of the links between memory and the archive, between compilation, registration, and the traces of History. Powell's work establishes a fine link between the memory of those sentenced to death in the United States, the memory of the Second World War, the artist's own memory, and the different world maps produced by colonial history. This link forces us to take into account our own connection not only with the voices and words that have been archived, but also with those voices that we want to hear and register.

Ager Tarraconensis 5. Paisatge, poblament, cultura material i història = Landscape, Settlement, Material Culture and History Proceedings of the International Symposium

Aquesta obra recull 28 comunicacions presentades al Simposi internacional «L’ager Tarraconensis. Paisatge, poblament, cultura material i història», celebrat a Tarragona el 27 i 28 d’octubre del 2010, organitzat per l’Institut Català d’Arqueologia Clàssica a la seu de l’Institut i a la Diputació de Tarragona. Les aportacions al simposi se centren en l'evolució del paisatge al Camp de Tarragona i en altres regions del món romà, en la varietat de les primeres estratègies de control romà del territori, en les tipologies i evolució dels establiments, en aspectes econòmics i en la dinàmica del poblament, sense faltar-hi alguna aportació de l'epigrafia. Tot plegat fa referència molt especialment al territori de Tarraco, tot i que el simposi també va comptar amb comunicacions sobre altres territoris de l'àrea catalana i saguntina i d'altres províncies romanes, com la Lusitània, les Gàl·lies i la Transpadana; les comparacions entre diferents regions han donat una riquesa notable al debat. Entre els resultats més suggerents comptem amb la constatació de la similitud en els models de romanització del territori en les diferents àrees d'àmbit català i valencià, que contrasten significativament amb els models de territoris d'Andalusia, França i Portugal.

An alternative reaction course was observed, resulting in the formation of a new tetracyclic system.

A carboxylesterase, Esterase-6, modulates sensory physiological and behavioural response dynamics to pheromone in Drosophila

Background: Insects respond to the spatial and temporal dynamics of a pheromone plume, which implies not only a strong response to"odor on", but also to"odor off". This requires mechanisms geared toward a fast signal termination. Several mechanisms may contribute to signal termination, among which odorant-degrading enzymes. These enzymes putatively play a role in signal dynamics by a rapid inactivation of odorants in the vicinity of the sensory receptors, although direct in vivo experimental evidences are lacking. Here we verified the role of an extracellular carboxylesterase, esterase-6 (Est-6), in the sensory physiological and behavioral dynamics of Drosophila melanogaster response to its pheromone, cis-vaccenyl acetate (cVA). Est-6 was previously linked to post-mating effects in the reproductive system of females. As Est-6 is also known to hydrolyze cVA in vitro and is expressed in the main olfactory organ, the antenna, we tested here its role in olfaction as a putative odorant-degrading enzyme. Results: We first confirm that Est-6 is highly expressed in olfactory sensilla, including cVA-sensitive sensilla, and we show that expression is likely associated with non-neuronal cells. Our electrophysiological approaches show that the dynamics of olfactory receptor neuron (ORN) responses is strongly influenced by Est-6, as in Est-6° null mutants (lacking the Est-6 gene) cVA-sensitive ORN showed increased firing rate and prolonged activity in response to cVA. Est-6° mutant males had a lower threshold of behavioral response to cVA, as revealed by the analysis of two cVAinduced behaviors. In particular, mutant males exhibited a strong decrease of male-male courtship, in association with a delay in courtship initiation. Conclusions: Our study presents evidence that Est-6 plays a role in the physiological and behavioral dynamics of sex pheromone response in Drosophila males and supports a role of Est-6 as an odorant-degrading enzyme (ODE) in male antennae. Our results also expand the role of Est-6 in Drosophila biology, from reproduction to olfaction, and highlight the role of ODEs in insect olfaction. Case-Crossover Analysis of Air Pollution Health Effects: A Systematic Review of Methodology and Application

Case-crossover is one of the most used designs for analyzing the health-related effects of air pollution. Nevertheless, no one has reviewed its application and methodology in this context. Objective: We conducted a systematic review of case-crossover (CCO) designs used to study the relationship between air pollution and morbidity and mortality, from the standpoint of methodology and application.Data sources and extraction: A search was made of the MEDLINE and EMBASE databases.Reports were classified as methodologic or applied. From the latter, the following information was extracted: author, study location, year, type of population (general or patients), dependent variable(s), independent variable(s), type of CCO design, and whether effect modification was analyzed for variables at the individual level. Data synthesis: The review covered 105 reports that fulfilled the inclusion criteria. Of these, 24 addressed methodological aspects, and the remainder involved the design’s application. In the methodological reports, the designs that yielded the best results in simulation were symmetric bidirectional CCO and time-stratified CCO. Furthermore, we observed an increase across time in the use of certain CCO designs, mainly symmetric bidirectional and time-stratified CCO. The dependent variables most frequently analyzed were those relating to hospital morbidity; the pollutants most often studied were those linked to particulate matter. Among the CCO-application reports, 13.6% studied effect modification for variables at the individual level.Conclusions: The use of CCO designs has undergone considerable growth; the most widely used designs were those that yielded better results in simulation studies: symmetric bidirectional and time-stratified CCO. However, the advantages of CCO as a method of analysis of variables at the individual level are put to little use

Cyclin-dependent kinases 4 and 6 control tumor progression and direct glucose oxidation in the pentose cycle

Cyclin-dependent kinases CDK4 and CDK6 are essential for the control of the cell cycle through the G1 phase. Aberrant expression of CDK4 and CDK6 is a hall- mark of cancer, which would suggest that CDK4 and CDK6 are attractive targets for cancer therapy. Herein, we report that calcein AM is a potent specific inhibitor of CDK4 and CDK6 in HCT116 human colon adenocarcinoma cells, inhibiting retinoblastoma protein (pRb) phosphorylation and inducing cell cycle arrest in the G1 phase. The metabolic effects of calcein AM (the calcein acetoxymethyl-ester) on HCT116 cells were also evaluated and the flux between the oxidative and non-oxidative branches of the pentose phos-phate pathway was significantly altered. To elucidate whe-ther these metabolic changes were due to the inhibition of CDK4 and CDK6, we also characterized the metabolic profile of a CDK4, CDK6 and CDK2 triple knockout of mouse embryonic fibroblasts. The results show that the metabolic profile associated with the depletion of CDK4, CDK6 and CDK2 coincides with the metabolic changes induced by calcein AM on HCT116 cells, thus confirming that the inhibition of CDK4 and CDK6 disrupts the balance between the oxidative and non-oxidative branches of the pentose phosphate pathway. Taken together, these results indicate that low doses of calcein can halt cell division and kill tumor cells. Thus, selective inhibition of CDK4 and CDK6 may be of greater pharmacological interest, since inhibitors of these kinases affect both cell cycle progression and the robust metabolic profile of tumors.

Desarrollo de una aplicación para la gestión de documentos internos de ámbito empresarial

La asesoría de empresas Ribas Álvarez tiene, actualmente, un problema con la gestión de documentos internos, que se realiza mediante correo interno y una aplicación sencilla de indexación de archivos (HTML); sin ningún tipo de supervisión ni restricción. Esta empresa dispone de un cierto número de trabajadores, los cuales pertenecen a diferentes secciones (privadas o públicas) dentro de la empresa. La información que circula dentro de la empresa, no tiene ningún tipo de seguridad pudiendo cualquier trabajador, disponer de ella aunque no le sea de utilidad. Se quiere crear una aplicación que cumpla con las necesidades que la empresa desea para la administración y gestión de documentos internos, con un control de usuarios y seguridad de acceso a esta aplicación. El objetivo básico de la aplicación seria la creación y gestión de una intranet de control y seguimiento de documentos para una asesoría de empresas

The referent : a new referential methodology and procedure in live drawing

My research in live drawing and new technologies uses a combination of a human figure in live in composition, overlaid with a digital projection of a second human figure. The aim is to explore, to amplify and thoroughly analyse the search for distinctive identities and graphic languages of representation for live and projected models.

Este libro es un nuevo fascículo del volumen I del proyecto CSIR-España, que a modo de corpus reúne, con carácter general y de modo minuciosamente sistemático, los sarcófagos romanos decorados de Andalucía, cuyo mayor número ya había sido objeto de publicación. La investigación histórica e iconográfica sobre los sarcófagos hispanos (en especial para los ejemplares paleocristianos) es deudora fundamentalmente de los estudios realizados por Sotomayor (1966: 77-99; 1975) y, más recientemente, por Koch (2000), además de dos de los autores que firman este trabajo, que en los últimos años se han detenido metódicamente sobre los sarcófagos béticos de tema profano (Beltrán, 1999; Rodríguez Oliva, 2001: 107-127).
