The linear prediction coding of speech is based in the assumption that the generation model is autoregresive. In this paper we propose a structure to cope with the nonlinear effects presents in the generation of the speech signal. This structure will consist of two stages, the first one will be a classical linear prediction filter, and the second one will model the residual signal by means of two nonlinearities between a linear filter. The coefficients of this filter are computed by means of a gradient search on the score function. This is done in order to deal with the fact that the probability distribution of the residual signal still is not gaussian. This fact is taken into account when the coefficients are computed by a ML estimate. The algorithm based on the minimization of a high-order statistics criterion, uses on-line estimation of the residue statistics and is based on blind deconvolution of Wiener systems [1]. Improvements in the experimental results with speech signals emphasize on the interest of this approach.

We re-examine the theoretical concept of a production function for cognitive achievement, and argue that an indirect production function that depends upon the variables that constrain parents' choices is both moretractable from an econometric point of view, and more interesting from an economic point of view than is a direct production function that depends upon a detailed list of direct inputs such as number of books in the household. We estimate flexible econometric models of indirect production functions for two achievement measures from the Woodcock-Johnson Revised battery, using data from two waves of the Child Development Supplement to the PSID. Elasticities of achievement measures with respect to family income and parents' educational levels are positive and significant. Gaps between scores of black and white children narrow or remain constant as children grow older, a result that differs from previous findings in the literature. The elasticities of achievement scores with respect to family income are substantially higher for children of black families, and there are some notable difference in elasticities with respect to parents' educational levels across blacks and whites.

The present notes are intended to present a detailed review of the existing results in dissipative kinetic theory which make use of the contraction properties of two main families of probability metrics: optimal mass transport and Fourier-based metrics. The first part of the notes is devoted to a self-consistent summary and presentation of the properties of both probability metrics, including new aspects on the relationships between them and other metrics of wide use in probability theory. These results are of independent interest with potential use in other contexts in Partial Differential Equations and Probability Theory. The second part of the notes makes a different presentation of the asymptotic behavior of Inelastic Maxwell Models than the one presented in the literature and it shows a new example of application: particle's bath heating. We show how starting from the contraction properties in probability metrics, one can deduce the existence, uniqueness and asymptotic stability in classical spaces. A global strategy with this aim is set up and applied in two dissipative models.

The objective of this paper is to estimate the impact of residential job accessibility on female employment probability in the metropolitan areas of Barcelona and Madrid. Following a “spatial mismatch” framework, we estimate a female employment probability equation where variables controlling for personal characteristics, residential segregation and employment potential on public transport network are included. Data used come from Microcensus 2001 of INE (National Institute of Statistics). The research focuses on the treatment of endogeneity problems and the measurement of accessibility variables. Our results show that low job accessibility in public transport negatively affects employment probability. The intensity of this effect tends to decrease with individual’s educational attainment. A higher degree of residential segregation also reduces job probability in a significant way..

Estudi observacional i prospectiu que analitza la eficàcia de l’Ex-press mini glaucoma shunt en 20 ulls que presenten un control deficient de la PIO amb el tractament mèdic i es practica cirurgia. El període de seguiment és d’un any i s’analitza el descens de la PIO a la setmana, al mes, als 6 mesos i a l’any en relació amb la PIO prèvia. Al mateix temps analitzarem la necessitat d’utilitzar tractament mèdic posterior a la intervenció quirúrgica i les complicacions derivades de la utilització de l’implant.

L'implant d’una lent intraocular fàquica tipus ICL (Implantable Collamer Lens) pot produir glaucoma agut per tancament angular degut a un bloqueig pupil•lar amb el consegüent augment de la pressió intraocular, el mecanisme i epidemiologia del qual no són ben coneguts. Aquest estudi preliminar pretén avaluar la incidència d'hipertensió ocular i glaucoma agut per tancament angular degut a bloqueig pupil·lar després de l'implant d'una lent posterior fàquica tipus ICL i plantejar hipòtesis sobre el seu mecanisme fisiopatològic.

L’objectiu de l’estudi va ser la determinació de la prevalença de malaltia arterial perifèrica mitjançant el càlcul de l'Índex turmell-braç (ITB) en pacients sense malaltia vascular associada, no diabètics, amb 2 o més factors de risc cardiovascular (RCV); Determinant la seva concordança amb les taules de RCV de REGICOR i SCORE i veure quina d’elles classifica millor a aquests pacients. Es va seleccionar una mostra aleatòria de pacients entre 50 i 65 anys. El resultat de l’estudi demostra que la prevalença és baixa i no s’estableix concordança entre les taules de RCV de REGICOR i SCORE i el càlcul del ITB.

Estudi prospectiu amb 36 pacients, on definírem un score semiquantitatiu per a diferents patrons de FPI a la TCAR, i la suma resultant (Score Total). Estudiàrem la relació amb paràmetres funcionals i cel.lularitat del RBA, analitzant-se’n les diferències amb els pacients morts. Trobàrem correlació entre el score de bresca (honeycomb) i total amb alguns paràmetres funcionals, prova de marxa de 6 minuts i la gasometria arterial. Els morts hi tenien major score total i tendència a la neutrofília. Concluírem que un score semiquantitatiu de TCAR és útil per a valorar la gravetat inicial i preveure l’evolució de la FPI. Compositional data analysis motivated the introduction of a complete Euclidean structure in the simplex of D parts. This was based on the early work of J. Aitchison (1986) and completed recently when Aitchinson distance in the simplex was associated with an inner product and orthonormal bases were identified (Aitchison and others, 2002; Egozcue and others, 2003). A partition of the support of a random variable generates a composition by assigning the probability of each interval to a part of the composition. One can imagine that the partition can be refined and the probability density would represent a kind of continuous composition of probabilities in a simplex of infinitely many parts. This intuitive idea would lead to a Hilbert-space of probability densitiesby generalizing the Aitchison geometry for compositions in the simplex into the set probability densities

In this paper, we define a new scheme to develop and evaluate protection strategies for building reliable GMPLS networks. This is based on what we have called the network protection degree (NPD). The NPD consists of an a priori evaluation, the failure sensibility degree (FSD), which provides the failure probability, and an a posteriori evaluation, the failure impact degree (FID), which determines the impact on the network in case of failure, in terms of packet loss and recovery time. Having mathematical formulated these components, experimental results demonstrate the benefits of the utilization of the NPD, when used to enhance some current QoS routing algorithms in order to offer a certain degree of protection

In networks with small buffers, such as optical packet switching based networks, the convolution approach is presented as one of the most accurate method used for the connection admission control. Admission control and resource management have been addressed in other works oriented to bursty traffic and ATM. This paper focuses on heterogeneous traffic in OPS based networks. Using heterogeneous traffic and bufferless networks the enhanced convolution approach is a good solution. However, both methods (CA and ECA) present a high computational cost for high number of connections. Two new mechanisms (UMCA and ISCA) based on Monte Carlo method are proposed to overcome this drawback. Simulation results show that our proposals achieve lower computational cost compared to enhanced convolution approach with an small stochastic error in the probability estimation

Power law distributions, a well-known model in the theory of real random variables, characterize a wide variety of natural and man made phenomena. The intensity of earthquakes, the word frequencies, the solar ares and the sizes of power outages are distributed according to a power law distribution. Recently, given the usage of power laws in the scientific community, several articles have been published criticizing the statistical methods used to estimate the power law behaviour and establishing new techniques to their estimation with proven reliability. The main object of the present study is to go in deep understanding of this kind of distribution and its analysis, and introduce the half-lives of the radioactive isotopes as a new candidate in the nature following a power law distribution, as well as a \canonical laboratory" to test statistical methods appropriate for long-tailed distributions.

Objetivo: Valorar el efecto sobre el grosor foveal de retirar el tratamiento con análogos de las prostaglandinas previamente a la cirugía de cataratas en pacientes con glaucoma o hipertensión ocular. Material y métodos: Estudio prospectivo y aleatorizado. Se incluyeron 90 ojos de 80 pacientes. Grupo A: Suspendió el tratamiento una semana antes de la cirugía y grupo B: Mantuvo el tratamiento. Resultados: No se encontraron diferencias significativas en el grosor foveal en ambos grupos (p&0.05). Conclusiones: La interrupción del tratamiento con análogos de prostaglandinas previa a la cirugía no influye en cambios en el grosor foveal en estos pacientes. Les neurotrofines son factors tròfics que poden induir la supervivencia, la diferenciació i el creixement de les neurones i aquesta és la principal raó per la qual les estudiem en el context de les malalties neurológiques. Les propietats nombrades son crucials per a la cerca d’efectes funcionals pel que fa a tractaments de malalties neurológiques. Avui en dia. donada la seva activitat neuroprotectora, s’ha intentat l’administració extena de neurotrofines com una terapia per diverses enfermetats cerebrals, pero fins ara han tingut poc o cap resultat donada la inhabilitat d’aquestes molècules per creuar la barrera hematoencefàlica i pels seus efectes secondaris, com ara el dolor neuroilogic. Per això, l’aplicació de petites molècules similars a les neurotrofines es considerada com unapossible sol•lució com un possible tractament neuroprotector amb el cervell com a diana. L’objectiu principal d’aquest projecte és testar l’eficacia d’un compost replicant de la neurotrofina pel tractament de algunes enfermetats neurològiques i per a estudiar el mecanisme d’acció d’aquesta molècula. Els resultats obtinguts fins al moment mostren que hem desenvolupat e identificat un compost replicant de la neurotrofina (G79) que manté la seva capacitat com a factor de creixement nerviós (NGF) en un assaig funcional d’NGF (diferenciació i tests de supervivència). A més a més, hem obtingut una proba de concepte per a la eficacia d’aquest compost com un agent terapèutic en diversos models in vivo e in vitro d’Esclerosi Múltiple, glaucoma, enfermetat de Parkinson y Esclerosi Lateral Amiotrófica. En conclusió, els resultats obtinguts durant aquests dos anys suggereixen que la molècula replicant d’NGF G79 és un bon candidat per a ser desenvolutat com a part d’una estratégica terapeutica la diferenciació neuronal, promou la supervivència, activa la fosforilització de TrkA i TrkB, vies de senyalització específiques de la neurotrofina. Aquesta molècula ademés pot creuar la barrera hematoencefàlica per vies de transport actiu, millora el score clínic en animals infectats per Encefalomielitis Autoinmune Experimental, protegeix les cèlules gangliars retinals en el model in vivo de Glaucoma, promou la supervivència de les cèlules en els models in vitro de l’enfermetat de Parkinson i en ELA. En resum, els nostres resultats sugereixen que les molècules replicants de neurotrofina poden desenvoluparse com part d’una estratègia terapéutica neuroprotectora.
