This work presents an analysis of the assessment tools used by professors at the Universitat Politécnica de Catalunya to assess the generic competencies introduced in the Bachelor’s Degrees in Engineering. In order to conduct this study, a survey was designed and administered anonymously to a sample of the professors most receptive to educational innovation at their own university. All total, 80 professors responded to this survey, of whom 26% turned out to be members of the universitys own evaluation innovation group (https://www.upc.edu/rima/grups/grapa), GRAPA. This percentage represents 47% of the total GRAPA membership, meaning that nearly half of the professors most concerned about evaluation at the university chose to participate. The analysis of the variables carried out using the statistical program SPSS v19 shows that for practically 49% of those surveyed, rubrics are the tools most commonly used to assess generic competencies integrated in more specific ones. Of those surveyed, 60% use them either frequently or always. The most frequently evaluated generic competencies were teamwork (28%), problem solving (26%), effective oral and written communication (24%) and autonomous learning (13%), all of which constitute commonly recognized competencies in the engineering profession. A two-dimensional crosstabs analysis with SPSS v19 shows a significant correlation (Asymp. Sig. 0.001) between the type of tool used and the competencies assessed. However, no significant correlation was found between the type of assessment tool used and the type of subject, type of evaluation (formative or summative), frequency of feedback given to the students or the degree of student satisfaction, and thus none of these variables can be considered to have an influence on the kind of assessment tool used. In addition, the results also indicate that there are no significant differences between the instructors belonging to GRAPA and the rest of those surveyed

Un estudi observacional de pacients amb LES, atesos al University College de London Hospital entre 1976 i 2005, es va dur a terme per revisar les diferències entre homes i dones amb lupus pel que fa a les característiques clíniques, serologia i resultats. 439 dones i 45 homes van ser identificats. L'edat mitjana al diagnòstic va ser de 29,3 anys (12,6), sense diferències significatives entre homes i dones. El sexe femení es va associar significativament amb la presència d'úlceres orals i Ig M ACA. No hi va haver diferències significatives en la comparació de les altres variables. Durant aquest període de seguiment de trenta anys, relativament poques diferències han sorgit al comparar les freqüències de les característiques clíniques i serològiques en homes y dones amb lupus.

Taking the Royal College of Barcelona (1760 -1843) as a case study this paper shows the development of modern surgery in Spain initiated by Bourbon Monarchy founding new kinds of institutions through their academic activities of spreading scientific knowledge. Antoni Gimbernat was the most famousinternationally recognised Spanish surgeon. He was trained as a surgeon at the Royal College of Surgery in Cadiz and was later appointed as professor of theAnatomy in the College of Barcelona. He then became Royal Surgeon of King Carlos IV and with that esteemed position in Madrid he worked resiliently to improve the quality of the Royal colleges in Spain. Learning human bodystructure by performing hands-on dissections in the anatomical theatre has become a fundamental element of modern medical education. Gimbernat favoured the study of natural sciences, the new chemistry of Lavoisier and experimental physics in the academic programs of surgery. According to the study of a very relevant set of documents preserved in the library, the so-called “juntas literarias”, among the main subjects debated in the clinical sessions was the concept of human beings and diseases in relation to the development of the new experimental sciences. These documents showed that chemistry andexperimental physics were considered crucial tools to understand the unexplained processes that occurred in the diseased and healthy human bodyand in a medico-surgical context. It is important to stress that through these manuscripts we can examine the role and the reception of the new sciences applied to healing arts.

Designing new teaching programs for both undergraduate and graduate university studies involves integrating concepts and methodologies regarding quality, work safety and hazard prevention, and environmental protection. One of the challenges facing Spanish research within the realm of European Higher Education concerns health and safety issues in the Arts.In the case of Fine Arts, student exploration is one of the fundamental pillars of the study program; therefore it is imperative that art studios be optimized. This optimization affects both designated resources (infrastructures, materials, equipment, etc.) and organization of the teaching force.In this context, the aim of our research is to improve educational practices by designing quality measures that are both friendly to the environment and hazardous free. The aim here is to assure adequate art studio and laboratory management, and provide students with hazard free health and environmentally safe concepts that can be incorporated in their professional lives.The school of Fine Arts at the University of Barcelona is part of a pilot program, where our experience in educational innovation and research is serving as a reference for the implantation of OSHAS 18001 norms.

Estudi elaborat a partir d’una estada a l’Institut of Archaeology de la University College of London i a jaciments arqueològics espanyols. L’objectiu ha estat l’aprenentatge del mètode carpològic a través de l’anàlisi de fruit i llavors recuperades a jaciments de cronologies paleolítiques i l’estudi de les col·leccions de referència de Institute of Archaeology. Els jaciments analitzats han estat el Molí del Salt (Vimbodí, Tarragona) i Atapuerca (Burgos). L’estudi de mostres carpològiques de jaciments Neolítics d’una regió del Nord de Xina han permès l’apropament previ a restes de cronologies més recents dels primers agricultors i ramaders.

Projecte de recerca elaborat a partir d’una estada a la School of politics and international relations, de la University College of Dublin, United Kingdom, entre 2007 i 2009. L’ objectiu del projecte present ha estat contribuir a l’estudi de les negociacions intergovernamentals a la Unió Europea (UE). En primer lloc, s’ha estudiat les estratègies de negociació del estats membres a negociacions intergovernamentals en la UE, per la qual cosa s’ha desenvolupat una tipologia d’estratègies de negociació, diferenciant entre les més agressives (conflictives) i les menys agressives (cooperatives). La conclusió principal ha estat que els actors difereixen en la elecció de les estratègies i que és precisament el poder relatiu dels actors que explica quines estratègies adopten. En segon lloc, s’analitza la ratificació dels resultats a les negociacions intergovernamentals, concentrant-me en l’us dels referèndums. La investigació mostra que els referèndums són sovint usats pels partits polítics com un instrument utilitzat durant les campanyes electorals, posant en dubte la tesis de que l’objectiu principal dels referèndums és influenciar els poder relatiu dels estats membres en negociacions intergovernamentals. Finalment, s’ha estudiat com els actors socials influeixen aquestes negociacions en la UE. La evidencia empírica clarament mostra que la pressió que exerceixen els grups de pressió es sovint subestimada.

El projecte Microscòpia d'alta resolució aplicada a anàlisis traceològiques, tafonòmiques y zooarqueològiques ha permès donar continuïtat i ampliar la xarxa científica posada en marxa gràcies a dos projectes PBR anteriors entre l’IPHES i quatre centres anglesos: l’Institute of Archaeology del University College of London, el Dept of Prehistory and Europe del British Museum, el Dept of Palaeontology del Natural History Museum, i el Lithic Microwear Research Laboratory de la University of Bradford. El tema tractat ha estat l’avaluació de la resolució i de la possible complementarietat de diferents tècniques avançades de microscòpia per a l’anàlisi de les superfícies d’ossos i eines de pedra prehistòriques: microscòpia òptica, electrònica (SEM i ESEM), microscòpia làser confocal (LSCM) i el sistema Alicona 3D Infinite Imaging. Les diverses accions de mobilitat entre Catalunya i el Regne Unit realitzades han permès satisfactòriament posar en comú els procediments emprats pels diferents especialistes de cada centre. Les proves realitzades sobre materials de jaciments arqueològics clau tant britànics com de l’estat espanyol han permès avaluar els avantatges i limitacions que cada tècnica presentava segons la mostra estudiada (eines de pedra, ossos, dents...) i segons els requeriments específics de l’estudi plantejat. En termes generals, s’ha posat en evidència que les diferents tècniques explorades són força complementàries. És a dir, la gran capacitat d’augments i de resolució d’imatge dels microscopis electrònics es complementa amb unes meravelloses prestacions quant anàlisi de textures, de perfils i de reconstrucció 3D dels altres aparells. La principal conclusió que podem extreure, doncs, és que l’estudi d’aquest tipus d’objectes arqueològics requereix de l’ús combinat de diferents aparells de microscòpia. Tant els treballs realitzats com els contactes entre especialistes establerts al llarg del projecte s’han plasmat ja en treballs concrets, alguns d’ells ja publicats o en fase final de publicació.
