Immigrant Families and the School in Spain: Dynamics and Factors that Influence their Relations

In Spain, academic debate and school administrations have evolved to the extent that relations between the school, the family and the surrounding environment are now considered as crucial to student achievement at school and to the good functioning of the educational system as a whole. Despite this development, change is slow in practice and often complicated due to the emerging resistance of families and schools, given that they have always maintained relations marked by an imbalance of power. Our theoretical and especially our empirical work has focused on the relations between immigrant families and the school system in Spain. In view of the above, the creation of what we call positive relational dynamics and communication in schools is conditioned by the attitudes and behaviour of the school administration, professionals and families. However, the physical space in which these relations take place must also be taken into consideration. Regarding school organisation, we have emphasised the role of the school’s administration. By differentiating the range of management models, we note the ones that facilitate more relations and communication with and among families (especially the one we have called the horizontal participative model) and those that discourage them. However, the multiple and complex range of attitudes among teachers and families must always be taken into account.

Recursos de información en una biblioteca virtual : la Biblioteca Virtual de la Universitat Oberta de Catalunya

La Biblioteca Virtual de la UOC té com a principal objectiu ésser al servei d'una comunitat acadèmica formada per estudiants, personal docent i personal de gestió i administració que desenvolupen la seva activitat totalment en línia, usant per a aquesta finalitat una intranet o Campus Virtual. Sobre la base d'aquest objectiu, es dissenyen i ofereixen tota una sèrie de serveis, recursos i eines que permetin cobrir les necessitats informatives que se'ls plantegin als membres d'aquesta comunitat virtual en el desenvolupament de les seves activitats - ja siguin aquestes laborals, docents o acadèmiques - i oferint diferents vies d'accés per tal d'aconseguir una major personalització.

Autonomia i inclusió dels alumnes d'educació infantil a l'escola rural: les conferències a l'escola La Popa de Castellcir

El tema central d’aquest Treball Final de Grau és l’autonomia dels alumnes d’educació infantil a l’escola rural. Aquest projecte està organitzat a partir de dos grans blocs. En el primer bloc hi trobem el marc teòric, on es desglossen totes els aspectes importants i característics de l’escola rural i les seves estratègies didàctiques, a banda de definir i recercar en el concepte d’autonomia. En el segon bloc hi trobem la part pràctica i el treball de camp. Aquest apartat es desenvolupa al voltant de l’estratègia didàctica de les conferències a l’escola La Popa de Castellcir que s’analitzen i s’avaluen per tal de conèixer com aquesta estratègia potencia l’autonomia i la inclusió dels infants a l’etapa d’educació infantil.

OER in Portugal as agent of curriculum innovation and technological change. Inducing practices of "new" teaching standards

This research project aimed the following goal: promote the creation, use and disclosure of OER in a Group of Schools, involving schools and teachers from different learning levels, expecting to test and validate the use of OER, in a learning-teaching model towards curricular innovation. Defining as a starting point different subjects and teachers from distinct academic areas, we have implemented a set of activities leading to the creation of OER supported, when possible, in FLOSS tools. We adopted an action research methodology with a dual purpose: to act within a community of teachers and students, while increasing at the same time their knowledge, as well as the researcher's. The activity was developed cooperatively in order to process a certain reality of the teaching-learning process, through practical/reflective action towards it and inducing its implementation by others in the Portuguese School System, based on the production and sharing OER.

Teaching ethnic diversity in journalism school

It has been found that the symbolic elites have a prominent role in the discursive reproduction of racism in society, because they control the public discourse through which many ethnic prejudices are spread and shared. This special position of the mass media requires that the professional education of journalists, also featuring such topics as ethnic studies, diversity and racism, is optimally adapted to the multicultural societies in Europe, North America and Australia. This paper reports about an extensive research project examining ethnic education of journalists in these white-dominated countries, by examining the websites of many journalism and communication departments. Consistent with the general finding that white symbolic elites primarily deny or ignore (their) racism in society, none of the academic programs, anywhere in the world, mentions special classes on racism in the mass media. Finally, a practical proposal is made for a course on ethnic reporting in multicultural societies.

Characterization and Application of Educational Virtual Environments for Science Teaching in Secondary School

This work describes the characteristics of a representative set of seven different virtual laboratories (VLs) aimed for science teaching in secondary school. For this purpose, a 27-item evaluation model that facilitates the characterization of the VLs was prepared. The model takes into account the gaming features, the overall usability, and also the potential to induce scientific literacy. Five of the seven VLs were then tested with two larger and highly heterogenic groups of students, and in two different contexts – biotechnology and physics, respectively. It is described how the VLs were received by the students, taking into account both their motivation and their self-reported learning outcome. In some cases, students’ approach to work with the VLs was recorded digitally, and analyzed qualitatively. In general, the students enjoyed the VL activities, and claimed that they learned from them. Yet, more investigation is required to address the effectiveness of these tools for significant learning.

El portafoli electrònic com a procediment avaluador de l'aprenentatge per a la comprensió als centres de secundària de la xarxa school+

Desenvolupar una experiència pedagògica que impliqués la perspectiva educativa delsprojectes de treball, i la utilització del sistema d¿ensenyament i aprenentatge virtualSchool+Microcosmos. 2. Afavorir una experiència de col·laboració entre el professorat de cada centre i entre elprofessorat dels diferents centres participants. 3. Realitzar una recerca sistemàtica, a partir de la utilització de diferents procediments de recollida d'evidències (observacions, entrevistes, anàlisis de materials, actes de reunió delgrup, informes finals,...) al voltant de les formes de comprensió que es poden produir per part dels estudiants, i com a camí per un replantejament de l'aprenentatge a l'educació secundària. La recerca desenvolupada ens ha mostrat com les possibilitats de promoure la comprensió des de la perspectiva educativa adoptada -els projectes de treball- són manifestes, però es troben limitades per les constriccions organitzatives -sobretot temporals i espacials- i curriculars que actualmentmediatitzen la capacitat innovadora dels centres de secundària. Aquest informe recull els processos i els resultats de la recerca i la innovació educativa realitzades, així com algunes de les seves conseqüències per a plantejar canvis en l'educació secundària.

The application of communicative language teaching : a particular case in a polish primary school

L’objectiu d’aquest estudi és examinar si l’Ensenyament Comunicatiu de la Llengua és usat per les mestres quan duen a terme classes d’anglès com a llengua estrangera en una escola de primària polonesa, amb un context educatiu especial. Aquesta recerca qualitativa analitza cinc conjunts principals d’informació relacionats amb l’ensenyament de la llengua estrangera que caracteritzen l’enfocament de l’Ensenyament Comunicatiu de la Llengua i que estan centrats en: el coneixement i les creences dels mestres sobre l’enfocament de l’Ensenyament Comunicatiu de la Llengua; l’ús de la llengua; els aspectes de la llengua anglesa que s’ensenyen; les característiques de les activitats: i el procés d’ensenyament. Per aquest objectiu, s’ha proporcionat un qüestionari a cada mestra d’anglès i s’han portat a terme algunes observacions d’aula per tal de recollir dades, analitzar-les i extreure’n unes conclusions. Els resultats de la investigació mostren que les mestres d’anglès donen bastant suport a l’enfocament de l’Ensenyament Comunicatiu de la Llengua, així com apliquen força sovint els seus trets característics quan porten a terme les classes.

¿Por qué los estudiantes participan poco en la gestión de la universidad? La opinión del profesorado = Why do students participate so little in the management of the university? The opinion of the teaching staff

El artículo invita a reflexionar sobre la participación de los estudiantes en la gestión y el gobierno de la universidad a partir de una investigación. Se centra en la opinión y percepción que el profesorado implicado directamente en la gestión de la docencia tiene sobre esta participación. Se aportan datos relevantes que ayudan a disponer de una visión más completa de un fenóneno complejo y multidimensional como es la participación estudiantil. Sus interpretaciones nos ofrecen información significativa que contribuye a comprender algunas de las causas de la baja participación y nos orienta hacia las posibles estrategias a emprender para intentar invertir esta tendencia

Enseñar a convivir, enseñar a comunicarse = Teaching to live together, teaching to communicate

In this article we look at some of the questions related to the learning of how to live together so that we may then look more closely at the relative aspects of the learning of language. We insist on the importance of the not strictly linguistic aspects associated to the incorporation of children from immigrant families to the schools. From this point of view we underline the heterogeneous nature of the situation in which these children find themselves (in function with the social and professional situation of the family, of having been born here or not, and of having or not previous school experience in the community of origin etc). We also look at the necessary eradication of stereo types in the treating of this problem. We then discuss some strategies where there can be joint collaboration in the school for attaining these objectives

In whichever case according to the treatment that we give it, it will have sufficient educationalpotential without forgetting that it is the student who is the important figure in the process. To achieve the objectives wemust facilitate practices that are in agreement with the indispensable ethical principles to try to bring about a meaningfuland functional learning.
