En aquest article s"ofereix la reconstrucció etimològica del verb hebreu ḥåyâ ʻviureʼ, un verb doblement dèbil, els orígens del qual van més enllà de l"estadi protosemític i s"endinsen en l"estadi antiquíssim del protoafroasiàtic. A partir dels testimonis de les llengües semítiques i afroasiàtiques més antigues, ens proposem oferir la reconstrucció de l"arrel protosemítica i protoafroasiàtica d"aquest verb hebreu i oferim nous comentaris etimològics que fins ara havien passat desapercebuts.

Farmacología y toxicología en I+D+i: adquisición de competencias a través de un ejemplo de desarrollo de un fármaco

The implementation of the subject Pharmacology and Toxicology in R+D+i in the Pharmacy Degree, has led to the launch of a new methodological approach and teaching performance with the aim of developing the generic skills of the University of Barcelona (e.g., self-learning, team-working). An additional objective was students' integration of knowledge from different subjects in the degree which form the basis of the preclinical and clinical development of a drug. For this purpose, the teaching strategy used in the development of the subject was based on: 1) re-developing the content that students had been taught previously or were being taught in the same semester as a part of other subjects, and framing them in the environment of the pharmaceutical industry, 2) introducing new and previously unseen contents to do with drug development and toxicology, 3) developing a battery of activities to be undertaken by teams of students relating to the R+D+i of a particular drug. During the development of these activities, students have to acquire generic skills in addition to the subject-specific skills. The results obtained from the student survey give us grounds for satisfaction and allow us to consider that we have reached the goal of improving students' learning in Pharmacology and Toxicology applied to drug development in the pharmaceutical world today.

La depuración del personal del Museo Arqueológico de Barcelona y del Servicio de Investigaciones Arqueológicas después de la Guerra Civil (1939-1941)

Al finalizar la Guerra Civil española (1936-1939), el personal del Museu d' Arqueologia y de la Secció d'Excavacions i Arqueologia del Servei del Patrimoni Artístic, Historic i Científic (SPAHC) de la suprimida Generalitat de Catalunya fue sometido a depuración por parte del Juzgado Militar Especial de Funcionarios de la Diputación Provincial de Barcelona. La llegada como nuevo director de Martín Almagro Basch, en substitución del exiliado Pere Bosch Gimpera, y el resultado de la reorganización subsiguiente marcaron el desarrollo de la investigación arqueológica en Cataluña hasta finales de la década de 1960.

Las emociones como variables relacionadas con el cambio de hábitos de salud en familiares y amigos próximos de enfermos de cáncer

Study of the changes in health habits of 105 cancer patients’ relatives and close friends after the diagnosis. The aim is to try to verify whether the knowledge of the disease has got some impact in the modification of their life styles. The emotional alterations influence in this change of behaviour has been analysed futhermore. An interview of own creation and HADS (Anxiety Hospital and Depression Scale of Zigmond and Snaith, 1983) instrument, in a Spanish and a Catalan version, were used with this aim. The results show that 21.1% of the participants presented positive changes in their health habits after the diagnosis of the relative or close friend and 11.5% showed negative changes. In relation to the role of the emotions, averages of anxiety (14,33; d.t.=4,98) and depressive (10,17; d.t.=4,93) symptoms were higher in those subjects who made negative changes than in those who did not make any change (9,32; d.t.=5,37 and 6,33; d.t.=4,64). In addition, the youngest participants, with more depressive symptoms and who visit the subject more often, are those who become more assets modifying health habits. The results suggest that emotional alterations, mainly depressive symptoms, are associated with negative change and, therefore, it would be suitable to lend some type of attention to these alterations in the population studied with the purpose of improving their present and future health

Tocant totes les tecles: Vicenç Sabater, un obrer de la música

Treball de recerca realitzat per un alumne d'ensenyament secundari i guardonat amb un Premi CIRIT per fomentar l'esperit cientí­fic del Jovent l'any 2009. El treball tracta sobre la petita memòria històrica en la faceta de l'oci de la nostra societat , el ball i la música concretament, centrat en la memòria de l'avi de l'autor, músic, arranjador i compositor. Es tracta doncs, d'una investigació sobre la música de ball a Barcelona i a Catalunya, i en general també a Europa, atès que gràcies a les vivències d'en Vicenç Sabater (l'avi), es relata com era la seva feina i el seu ofici, el de músic. La recerca està ordenada cronològicament, començant pel seu naixement (1930), la formació i les primeres actuacions, passant per tota la seva vida personal, però sobretot professional, i conclou amb un epíleg sense el qual el treball de recerca no tindria sentit, ja que aquest explica com el Vicenç no s'ha jubilat mai, perquè sempre ha estat treballant amb la música, i perquè sempre que el seu físic li permeti, ell s'hi seguirà dedicant. El treball inclou un apartat destacat de la llarga etapa (30 anys) de Sabater amb el grup musical 'Rudy Ventura y su conjunto'. Molta d'aquesta informació s'obté a través d'entrevistes a dos dels cinc integrants del grup: el mateix Jaume Ventura, i en Joan Antoni Calvet, cantant i bateria, respectivament. Apartat que, dissortadament, s'ha convertit en el meu involuntari i modest homenatge a Jaume ('Rudy') Ventura , recentment traspassat.

Trombosis Valvular Protésica No Obstructiva: ¿es realmente una entidad banal?

El objetivo de este estudio es valorar el pronóstico a corto y largo plazo de los pacientes diagnosticados de trombosis valvular protésica no obstructiva (TVPNO). Se han recogido los datos de una serie de casos diagnosticados de TVPNO en los últimos 14 años. El tratamiento inicial ha sido la anticoagulación, que ha sido menos eficaz para los trombos de mayor tamaño. Al alta, se indicó anticoagulación sola o con antiagregación sobreañadida. En el seguimiento a largo plazo se registraron más eventos adversos en el grupo con doble tratamiento (más recurrencia, eventos tromboembólicos y hemorragias).

La finalidad de este proyecto es la realización de una aplicación para dispositivos Android. El juego va dirigido a toda persona que quiera aprender o simplemente disfrutar del juego del póquer con personas conocidas. Esta aplicación pretende que jugar al póquer sea una práctica sencilla para todo el mundo. Se consigue también que sea el propio sistema el encargado de aplicar las normas y que sin necesidad de conexión a internet sea capaz de jugar con mas personas a la vez en un mismo dispositivo. Se ha escogido este sistema por la gran influencia que tiene y su fácil uso, además de posibilidades y facilidades que ofrece su compatibilidad con un lenguaje consolidado como es Java y XML.

Adaptive model selection using empirical complexities

Given $n$ independent replicates of a jointly distributed pair $(X,Y)\in {\cal R}^d \times {\cal R}$, we wish to select from a fixed sequence of model classes ${\cal F}_1, {\cal F}_2, \ldots$ a deterministic prediction rule $f: {\cal R}^d \to {\cal R}$ whose risk is small. We investigate the possibility of empirically assessingthe {\em complexity} of each model class, that is, the actual difficulty of the estimation problem within each class. The estimated complexities are in turn used to define an adaptive model selection procedure, which is based on complexity penalized empirical risk.The available data are divided into two parts. The first is used to form an empirical cover of each model class, and the second is used to select a candidate rule from each cover based on empirical risk. The covering radii are determined empirically to optimize a tight upper bound on the estimation error. An estimate is chosen from the list of candidates in order to minimize the sum of class complexity and empirical risk. A distinguishing feature of the approach is that the complexity of each model class is assessed empirically, based on the size of its empirical cover.Finite sample performance bounds are established for the estimates, and these bounds are applied to several non-parametric estimation problems. The estimates are shown to achieve a favorable tradeoff between approximation and estimation error, and to perform as well as if the distribution-dependent complexities of the model classes were known beforehand. In addition, it is shown that the estimate can be consistent,and even possess near optimal rates of convergence, when each model class has an infinite VC or pseudo dimension.For regression estimation with squared loss we modify our estimate to achieve a faster rate of convergence.

Estudio Farmacogenético en Pacientes con Cáncer de Pulmón No Microcítico Avanzado tratados con Quimioterapia basada en Platino

a partir de ADN genómico obtenido de las células nucleadas de sangre periférica de 103 pacientes con Cáncer de Pulmón No Microcítico (CPNM) avanzado tratados con quimioterapia basada en platino, hemos analizado la asociación entre supervivencia y cinco SNPs (Single Nucleotide Polymorphism) pertenecientes a dos grupos de genes: i) de la via metabólica del ácido fólico (Timidilato Sintetasa (TS), Metil-tetrahidrofolato Reductasa (MTHFR) y, ii) de la vía de reparación del ADN (Excision repair cross-complemeting group 1 (ERCC1) y Xeroderma pigmentosum group D (XPD).

This paper presents a historical examination of employment in old age in Spain, in order to characterize this labour segment and identify and analyse its specific problems. One of these problems is the life-cycle deskilling process, already shown for certain national cases. This study explores whether this hypothesis also holds in Spain. The perspective used is essentially quantitative, as our analysis is based on the age-profession tables in Spanish population censuses from 1900 to 1970.
