PelicanHPC tutorial

PelicanHPC is a rapid (around 5 minutes, when you know what you're doing) means of setting up a high performance computing (HPC) cluster for parallel computing using MPI. This tutorial gives a basic description of what PelicanHPC does,  addresses how to use the released CD images to set up a HPC cluster, and gives some basic examples of usage.

El present projecte se centrarà en l'aplicació dels SIG a la prevenció dels incendis forestals a Catalunya. En concret en la localització de zones òptimes per a la instal lació de tallafocs, mitjançant la utilització dels programes lliures gvSIG i Sextant, a més de la base de dades (BDD) espacial PostgreeSQL / PostGIS.

Revisiting the compositional data. Some fundamental questions and new prospects in Archaeometry and Archaeology

In this paper we examine the problem of compositional data from a different startingpoint. Chemical compositional data, as used in provenance studies on archaeologicalmaterials, will be approached from the measurement theory. The results will show, in avery intuitive way that chemical data can only be treated by using the approachdeveloped for compositional data. It will be shown that compositional data analysis is aparticular case in projective geometry, when the projective coordinates are in thepositive orthant, and they have the properties of logarithmic interval metrics. Moreover,it will be shown that this approach can be extended to a very large number ofapplications, including shape analysis. This will be exemplified with a case study inarchitecture of Early Christian churches dated back to the 5th-7th centuries AD

Assesing the political viability of labour market reform: The case of employment protection

We analyze the political support for employment protection legislation.Unlike my previous work on the same topic, this paper pays a lot ofattention to the role of obsolescence in the growth process.In voting in favour of employment protection, incumbent employeestrade off lower living standards (because employment protectionmaintains workers in less productive activities) against longer jobduration. The support for employment protection will then depend onthe value of the latter relative to the cost of the former. Wehighlight two key deeterminants of this trade-off: first, the workers'bargaining power, second, the economy's growth rate-more preciselyits rate of creative destruction.

L’estudi dels incendis històrics permet identificar la tipología d’incendis presents en l’àmbit d’estudi, i es determinen unes regions d’incendi sobre les quals s’establiran infraestructures estratègiques i zones de gestió de combustible per minimitzar l’efecte d’aquesta pertorbació i dotar d’oportunitats a l’extinció per tal de que aquests incendis no esdevinguin Grans Incendis Forestals (GIF).
