The optimal behaviour of firms facing stochastic costs

This paper aims at assessing the optimal behavior of a firm facing stochastic costs of production. In an imperfectly competitive setting, we evaluate to what extent a firm may decide to locate part of its production in other markets different from which it is actually settled. This decision is taken in a stochastic environment. Portfolio theory is used to derive the optimal solution for the intertemporal profit maximization problem. In such a framework, splitting production between different locations may be optimal when a firm is able to charge different prices in the different local markets.

La retórica comunicativa de Abraham Lincoln a través de sus discursos

El presidente Abraham Lincoln triunfaba en sus discursos gracias a sus artes retóricas y oratorias. Estas técnicas y recursos lingüísticos que empleaba Lincoln para que sus disertaciones fueran de lo más claras y concisas serán mostradas y evaluadas. Además, se analizarán tres de sus discursos más célebres y se intentará demostrar el estilo lincolniano que existe en ellos. También, se expondrán las características de un buen orador y se relacionarán con las que usaba el presidente. Para poder presentar toda esta investigación se ha buscado y averiguado en libros especializados sobre Lincoln, volúmenes sobre oratoria y retórica, revistas, periódicos de la época, Internet y en sus discursos. También, ha sido necesario asistir a exposiciones y exhibiciones sobre la figura de Abraham Lincoln celebradas en Nueva York y Washington.

Intraovarian sperm storage in Helicolenus dactylopterus dactylopterus fertilitzation, crypt formation and maintenance of stored sperm

The females of the bluemouth rockfish, Helicolenus dactylopterus dactylopterus (DelaRoche, 1809), store sperm within their ovaries for periods of up to 10 months. Twenty six females with standard lengths between 152 and 257 mm and six males with standard lengths between 253 and 209 mm were caught storage crypts with stored spermatozoa and to describe their evolution over the year. After internal fertilization and once sperm reaches the ovary, a crypt forms probably by an epithelial inclusion at the base of the lamellae of one or several spermatozoa groups that are floating freely in the interlamellar space of the ovarian lumen. Stored spermatozoa have a large cytoplasm bag surrounding their heads. This bag could serve as a nutritive reservoir during the long storage period. Many desmosonal and tight junctions between the crypt cells ensure tha male sex cells are protected against the female immune system

The Next Step: Darwin, Brontë, Fowles

The present article proposes Heathcliff and Sarah Woodruff as monstrous beings who reclaim their desire to be agent subjects in a society and a narrative which deny such a possibility. It would be possible to argue, however, that their monstrosity might be that of the unique specimen, the potential first stage towards the improvement of species through natural selection as theorized by Charles Darwin in 1859. The multiple references to Darwin’s study in the novel by JohnFowles demonstrate that such a theory could clarify what Sarah represents in the novel. In a retroactive manner, Darwinian theory might be used to understand what Heathcliff is, who Heathcliff is, and why he is the object of general animosity. It might be concluded that what is really monstrous about these twocharacters is that both are new specimens, avant la lèttre, and they occupy a space to which language has no access.

Ilustración y nihilismo en los Artículos de Mariano José de Larra

En la primera parte de este artículo se muestra cómo el concepto de ser humano que Larra utiliza en sus escritos es de clara raigambre ilustrada. En la segunda, se analiza cómo el autor de los Artículos, tras tomar conciencia de los límites de dicho ideal, reaccionó con un extremismo nihilista que le llevó a ver como detestables aquellas capacidades humanas que los ilustrados habían valorado positivamente: el lenguaje, la racionalidad y la sociabilidad. En la tercera parte, se estudia, a la luz de los escritos de Friedrich Nietzsche, los dos tipos de nihilismo que se enfrentaron en el espíritu y en la obra de Larra.

Conociendo a Darwin a partir de sus escritos

En este artículo me gustaría presentar algunos aspectos de la personalidad e inquietudes intelectuales a partir de la lectura de dos de sus libros:"A naturalist voyage around the World", en su versión ilustrada de D. Appleton and Co. New York 1890 y"The origin of species" versión de 1859 y reeditada por CRW Pub. Ltd. London 2004. El primer detalle que llama la atención al leer el primer libro es percatarse que Darwin era un naturalista formidable. Esta característica suya muchas veces ha quedado enmascarada por su obra principal, la teoría de la evolución por medio de la selección natural.
