Alignment of hexatic langmuir monolayers under shear

We have studied the structural changes that fatty acid monolayers in the Ov phase undergo when a simple shear flow is imposed. A strong coupling is revealed by the changes in domain structure that are observable using Brewster angle microscopy, suggesting the possibility of shear alignment. The dependence of the alignment on the molecular polar tilt proves that the mechanism is different than in nematic liquid crystals. We argue that the degenerate lattice symmetry lines of the underlying pseudohexagonal lattice align in the flow direction, and we explain the observed alignment angle using geometrical arguments.

Self-organizing propagation patterns from dynamic self-assembly in monolayers

Propagation of localized orientational waves, as imaged by Brewster angle microscopy, is induced by low intensity linearly polarized light inside axisymmetric smectic-C confined domains in a photosensitive molecular thin film at the air/water interface (Langmuir monolayer). Results from numerical simulations of a model that couples photoreorientational effects and long-range elastic forces are presented. Differences are stressed between our scenario and the paradigmatic wave phenomena in excitable chemical media.

Selecció dels paràmetres de fabricació per CN per obtenir acabats òptims mitjançant una eina CAM

L’ús dels sistemes CAD/CAM s’ha fet un lloc important a les indústries en què intervenen els processos de mecanització, ja que aquests softwares redueixen el temps per crear un programa de control numèric i permeten mecanitzar superfícies complicades de dues i tres dimensions. La introducció en el mercat d’aquests sistemes de fabricació assistida per ordinador ha fet que apareguessin un elevat nombre de paràmetres de control associats a cada un dels cicles de mecanització. L’elecció del cicle i dels paràmetres repercuteix també en el temps de tall, l’acabat superficial, la vida i el desgast de l’eina, i en el preu final de la peça entre d’altres. L’equip d’investigació del GREPP (Grup de Recerca en Enginyeria de Procés, Producte i Producció) va fer un estudi previ de diferents paràmetres, controlant quatre estratègies de mecanització i tres paràmetres de procés, del sistema CAM per tal d’obtenir el millor acabat superficial. L’objecte del projecte final de carrera és fer noves experimentacions de la investigació iniciada pel grup de recerca del GREPP, ampliant les geometries i algun factor de control per tal de tenir un major nombre de dades i així, poder saber el comportament que tenen aquests factors en el temps de tall i la rugositat superficial

Nonequilibrium phase transition in a model for the propagation of innovations among economic agents

We characterize the different morphological phases that occur in a simple one-dimensional model of propagation of innovations among economic agents [X. Guardiola et al., Phys. Rev E 66, 026121 (2002)]. We show that the model can be regarded as a nonequilibrium surface growth model. This allows us to demonstrate the presence of a continuous roughening transition between a flat (system size independent fluctuations) and a rough phase (system size dependent fluctuations). Finite-size scaling studies at the transition strongly suggest that the dynamic critical transition does not belong to directed percolation and, in fact, critical exponents do not seem to fit in any of the known universality classes of nonequilibrium phase transitions. Finally, we present an explanation for the occurrence of the roughening transition and argue that avalanche driven dynamics is responsible for the novel critical behavior.

Understanding and modulating the competitive surface-adsorption of proteins through coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations

It is now well accepted that cellular responses to materials in a biological medium reflect greatly the adsorbed biomolecular layer, rather than the material itself. Here, we study by molecular dynamics simulations the competitive protein adsorption on a surface (Vroman effect), i.e. the non-monotonic behavior of the amount of protein adsorbed on a surface in contact with plasma as functions of contact time and plasma concentration. We find a complex behavior, with regimes during which small and large proteins are not necessarily competing between them, but are both competing with others in solution ("cooperative" adsorption). We show how the Vroman effect can be understood, controlled and inverted.

Quasi real-time Raman studies on the growth of Cu-In-S thin films

In this work annealing and growth of CuInS2 thin films is investigated with quasireal-time in situ Raman spectroscopy. During the annealing a shift of the Raman A1 mode towards lower wave numbers with increasing temperature is observed. A linear temperature dependence of the phonon branch of ¿2 cm¿1/100 K is evaluated. The investigation of the growth process (sulfurization of metallic precursors) with high surface sensitivity reveals the occurrence of phases which are not detected with bulk sensitive methods. This allows a detailed insight in the formation of the CuInS2 phases. Independent from stoichiometry and doping of the starting precursors the CuAu ordering of CuInS2 initially forms as the dominating ordering. The transformation of the CuAu ordering into the chalcopyrite one is, in contrast, strongly dependent on the precursor composition and requires high temperatures.

Hemerotecas de prensa digital: evolución y tendencias

Se analizan las hemerotecas digitales de los diarios españoles de mayor audiencia y difusión. Es un estudio evaluativo basado en 27 indicadores divididos en 4 grandes secciones: aspectos generales, contenidos, sistema de consulta y presentación de resultados. Se muestran los resultados de un análisis realizado en 2010, y se relacionan con los obtenidos anteriormente en 2007. Se señalan los aspectos mejores y peores de las hemerotecas de prensa digital, se establece un ranking de diarios en el que ocupan las primeras posiciones El mundo, Abc, El país y La vanguardia, y se destacan 5 grandes tendencias observadas: ampliación del fondo temporal online, hemerotecas gratuitas versus hemerotecas de pago, simplificación (y empobrecimiento) de la búsqueda, filtros en la presentación de resultados y productos documentales en la sección Hemeroteca

Un país amb 7 territoris

El nou Estatut d’autonomia de Catalunya (2006) preveu la creació de vegueries, enteses en la doble funció d’ens local en substitució de les diputacions i com a àmbit d’actuació perifèrica de la Generalitat. Resta per aclarir l’encaix de la vegueria amb la província estatal. Hores d’ara la planificació del territori i bona part de l’administració perifèrica de la Generalitat s’organitza en 7 àmbits, en tant que l’Estat manté inalterada la seva organització en 4 províncies. S’estudien els precedents històrics de les vegueries contemporànies i en particular el debat i gestació de 9 regions en temps de la Generalitat republicana (1931-1939). Es posa de relleu la important aportació intel·lectual d’Enric Lluch en la reforma i simplificació del mapa de vegueries (de 9 a 7). Es planteja el feixuc trànsit efectuat des de la idea de “província única” al plantejament d’un increment en el nombre de províncies-vegueries.

Nuclear surface properties in relativistic effective field theory

We perform Hartree calculations of symmetric and asymmetric semi-infinite nuclear matter in the framework of relativistic models based on effective hadronic field theories as recently proposed in the literature. In addition to the conventional cubic and quartic scalar self-interactions, the extended models incorporate a quartic vector self-interaction, scalar-vector non-linearities and tensor couplings of the vector mesons. We investigate the implications of these terms on nuclear surface properties such as the surface energy coefficient, surface thickness, surface stiffness coefficient, neutron skin thickness and the spin-orbit force.
