Electronic journals, scholarly communication and libraries

The recent surge in scientific electronic journals began when libraries began having access to the WWW in the mid-1990s. The shift from paper to digital has affected the traditional alignment and role of the primary "stakeholders" -mainly authors, publishers, universities and libraries. The author offers a brief review of the history of the scholarly journal followed by the evolution of e-journals in during the past two decades. The article then focuses on the implications that these have had on traditional library processes and services such as selection, acquisitions, cataloguing, storage, preservation and user services. In the conclusion the author speculates on the long term effect of Web-based publishing on the format of the traditional scholarly journal as it has existed for over 300 years.

Webs siempre accesibles: las bibliotecas nacionales y los depósitos digitales nacionales

Information and communication technologies enabled cultural and scientific patrimony -and information in general- to be presented in digital format, as well as in traditional analogical formats. The response was immediate and since the decade of the 1990s different projects have been designed to guarantee permanent access to the digital production -retrieval, storage, handling, preservation and dissemination. This article presents an international overview of existing models of national digital repositories, a name given to these projects that are normally generated by national libraries with a common objective: ensuring that web pages are always accessible.

Los fondos y las colecciones de archivo en las bibliotecas: modelos para su control y acceso

First, we examine the context of creation of special collection units in libraries, and the reasons why libraries compile archive materials and collections. Second, we focus on the techniques used in library environments to describe archive materials and collections and to guarantee their accessibility. We examine the models used in the United States and the United Kingdom to describe and access these materials, and the cooperative projects launched in these two countries in the past few years. Finally, we offer a preliminary analysis of how these types of materials are currently dealt with in Catalan libraries, and issue some recommendations to improve their archiving and access.

Librarians' perceptions on the use of electronic resources at Catalan academic libraries: results of a focus group

The aim of this paper is to expand on previous quantitative and qualitative research into the use of electronic information resources and its impact on the information behaviour of academics at Catalan universities.

El uso de la norma de calidad ISO 9001 en las bibliotecas de instituciones de educación superior

[eng] ISO standard 9001 is one of a set of management tools that libraries have adopted in recent years. This article focuses on libraries in higher education institutions that have received ISO certification of their quality management systems (ISO standard 9001:2000). We examine their reasons for seeking certification and the advantages and difficulties they have encountered in applying this ISO standard. Finally, we consider the future prospects of ISO standard 9001 in university libraries.

Biblioteca pública y discapacidad: recursos y servicios para todos

La biblioteca pública (BP) ofrece servicios orientados a facilitar el acceso a la información y al uso lúdico de la lectura a toda la ciudadanía, configurándose, de este modo, como un espacio de cohesión social, en el cual las personas pueden ejercer el derecho democrático de acceder a la cultura, la literatura y la información. Sin embargo, una de las características menos conocida de la BP es su intencionalidad "inclusiva", esto es, que las personas con discapacidad son ciudadanos de pleno derecho y, por tanto, también son usuarios de la biblioteca pública, tal como reconoce el Manifiesto de la UNESCO de la Biblioteca Pública (1994).Esta comunicación se propone tres objetivos: primero, reflexionar sobre el apoyo que la BP, en cumplimiento de sus funciones esenciales, proporciona a las personas con discapacidad, a sus familias y a los profesionales que les atienden; segundo, dar a conocer a estos colectivos la existencia de aquellos recursos y servicios que la BP les ofrece y, tercero y último, presentar algunas buenas prácticas que muestran que la BP es y debe ser un agente activo en la inclusión comunitaria.

Pacients crònics i fonts d'informació de qualitat a Internet: actuacions des d'atenció primària

Proposta d'implantació a les consultes d'infermeria d'atenció primària d'un procediment relacionat amb la qualitat de la informació a Internet i l'aprofitament dels recursos d'informació i de salut disponibles, amb dos objectius: primer, proporcionar als pacients crònics criteris per identificar i seleccionar fonts d'informació de qualitat a Internet per tal que puguin gestionar la seva malaltia i ser autònoms en la seva autocura; i, segon, avaluar els coneixements extrets d'Internet que tenen els pacients crònics. Es proposa complementar el procediment amb activitats comunitàries en espais alternatius com els centres cívics, els casals de gent gran i, especialment, les biblioteques públiques.

Internet, bibliotecas públicas y centros de atención primaria: información de calidad y formación al alcance de los ciudadanos

Propuesta de colaboración entre los centros de atención primaria y las bibliotecas públicas para dar respuesta a la demanda ciudadana de formación e información de calidad sobre salud en Internet. Se pretende optimizar así los recursos de estos dos servicios públicos en beneficio del paciente crónico.

A virtual exhibition of open source software for libraries

Frequently the choice of a library management program is conditioned by social, economic and/or political factors that result in the selection of a system that is not altogether suitable for the library’s needs, characteristics and functions. Open source software is quickly becoming a preferred solution, owing to the freedom to copy, modify and distribute it and the freedom from contracts, as well as for greater opportunities for interoperability with other applications. These new trends regarding open source software in libraries are also reflected in LIS studies, as evidenced by the different courses addressing automated programs, repositorymanagement, including the Linux/GNU operating system, among others. The combination of the needs of the centres and the new trends for open source software is the focus of a virtual laboratory for the use of open source software for library applications. It was the result of a project, whose aim was to make a useful contribution to the library community, that was carried out by a group of professors of the School of Library and Information Science of the University of Barcelona, together with a group of students, members of a Working Group on Open Source Software for Information Professionals, of the Professional Library Association of Catalonia.
