This paper examines the determinants of young innovative companies’ (YICs) R&D activities taking into account the autoregressive nature of innovation. Using a large longitudinal dataset comprising Spanish manufacturing firms over the period 1990-2008, we find that previous R&D experience is a fundamental determinant for mature and young firms, albeit to a smaller extent in the case of the YICs, suggesting that their innovation behaviour is less persistent and more erratic. Moreover, our results suggest that firm and market characteristics play a distinct role in boosting the innovation activity of firms of different age. In particular, while market concentration and the degree of product diversification are found to be important in boosting R&D activities in the sub-sample of mature firms only, YICs’ spending on R&D appears to be more sensitive to demand-pull variables, suggesting the presence of credit constraints. These results have been obtained using a recently proposed dynamic type-2 tobit estimator, which accounts for individual effects and efficiently handles the initial conditions problem.

AbstractArticle StructureFigures and TablesReferences Benefits from probiotic micro-organisms have been recognised for over 100 years, and as being useful in poultry for 50 years. Fuller (1989) redefined probiotics as ‘a live microbial feed supplement which beneficially affects the host animal by improving its intestinal microbial balance’. Benefits derived from this improved intestinal microbial balance could be reflected in performance or prevention of pathogen colonisation. Probiotic micro-organisms use in poultry production has been widely accepted and new opportunities arose from the 2006 EU ban on antimicrobial growth promoters. The majority of microbial products for compound feeds are made up from a relatively small number of micro-organisms that are normally present in the GI tract. They include non-sporulated bacteria, sporulated bacteria, fungi or yeasts; and presented from single to multi-strain products. A review on the proposed modes of action is presented including recent approaches to quorum sensing interference

The aim of this paper is to analyse the effects of human capital, advanced manufacturing technologies (AMT), and new work organizational practices on firm productivity, while taking into account the synergies existing between them. This study expands current knowledge in this area in two ways. First, in contrast with previous works, we focus on AMT and not ICT (information and communication technologies). Second, we use a unique employer-employee data set for small firms in a particular area of southern Europe (Catalonia, Spain). Using a small firm data set, allows us to analyse the particular case of small and medium enterprises, since we cannot assume they have the same characteristics as large firms. The results provide evidence in favor of the complementarity hypothesis between human capital, advanced manufacturing technologies, and new work organization practices, although we show that the complementarity effects depend on what type of work organization practices are used by a firm. For small and medium Catalan firms, the only set of work organization practices that improve the benefits of human capital and technology investment are those practices which are more quality oriented, such as quality circles, problem-solving groups or total quality management.

The purpose of this paper is to examine the determinants of use internal or external labour market to fill a firm vacancy in SME’s taking into account the differences existing among blue and white collar jobs. Following different theories we can identify three main reasons for use internal candidates rather than external ones‐ firm specific knowledge, adverse selection problems and motivation‐. However, there are others factors that might affect this choice but the last theories don’t take into account. In this paper we try to shed some light on what are these other factors that may affect firm decision to use internal or external labour market. Particularly we analyses the relationship among new technologies, innovation activity and firm location on the staffing strategy. The results shows difference behaviour on the decision to fill a vacancy using internal or external labour markets between manufacturing and service firms, and this decision depends not only on firm internal characteristics, like technological complexity or innovation activity, but also on firm location. The results also support the hypothesis of ports of entry especially in the manufacturing sector.

This article provides a theoretical and empirical analysis of a firm's optimal R&D strategy choice. In this paper a firm's R&D strategy is assumed to be endogenous and allowed to depend on both internal firms. characteristics and external factors. Firms choose between two strategies, either they engage in R&D or abstain from own R&D and imitate the outcomes of innovators. In the theoretical model this yields three types of equilibria in which either all firms innovate, some firms innovate and others imitate, or no firm innovates. Firms'equilibrium strategies crucially depend on external factors. We find that the efficiency of intellectual property rights protection positively affects firms'incentives to engage in R&D, while competitive pressure has a negative effect. In addition, smaller firms are found to be more likely to become imitators when the product is homogeneous and the level of spillovers is high. These results are supported by empirical evidence for German .rms from manufacturing and services sectors. Regarding social welfare our results indicate that strengthening intellectual property protection can have an ambiguous effect. In markets characterized by a high rate of innovation a reduction of intellectual property rights protection can discourage innovative performance substantially. However, a reduction of patent protection can also increase social welfare because it may induce imitation. This indicates that policy issues such as the optimal length and breadth of patent protection cannot be resolved without taking into account specific market and firm characteristics. This paper analyzes the effect of firms’ innovation activities on their growth performance. In particular, we observe how important innovation is for high-growth firms (HGFs) for an extensive sample of Spanish manufacturing and services firms. The panel data used comprises diverse waves of Spanish CIS over the the period 2004-2008. First, a probit analysis determines whether innovation affects the probability of being a high-growth firm. And second, a quantile regression technique is applied to explore the determinants and characteristics of specific groups of firms (manufacturing versus service firms and high-tech versus low-tech firms). It is revealed that R&D plays a significant role in the probability of becoming a HGF. Investment in internal and external R&D per employee has a positive impact on firm growth (although internal R&D presents a significant impact in the last quantiles, external R&D is significant up to the median). Furthermore, we show evidence that there is a positive impact of employment (sales) growth on the sales (employment) growth. Investigación producida a partir de una estancia en la Université Paul Sabatier, Toulouse III - CNRS, entre 2007 y 2009. Durante los últimos años la investigación centrada en nuevos materiales de tamaño nanoscòpico (nanopartículas, quantum dots, nanotubos de carbono,...) ha experimentado un crecimiento considerable debido a las especiales propiedades de los "nanoobjetos" con respecto a magnetismo, catálisis, conductividad eléctrica, etc ... Sin embargo, hoy en día todavía existen pocas aplicaciones de las nanopartículas en temas medioambientales. Uno de los motivos de esta situación es la posible toxicidad de los nanoobjetos, pero existe también una dificultad tecnológica dado que las nanopartículas tienden a agregarse y es muy difícil manipularlas sin que pierdan sus propiedades especiales. Así, aunque la preparación de materiales catalíticos nanoestructurados es muy interesante, es necesario definir nuevas estrategias para prepararlos. Este proyecto de investigación tiene como objetivo principal la preparación de nuevas membranas catalíticas con nanopartículas metálicas en el interior para aplicaciones de tratamiento de agua. La innovación principal de este proyecto consiste en que las nanopartículas no son introducidas en la matriz polimérica una vez preformadas sino que se hacen crecer en el interior de la matriz polimérica mediante una síntesis intermatricial. El único requisito es que la matriz polimérica contenga grupos funcionales capaces de interaccionar con los precursores de las nanopartículas. Una vez finalizado el proyecto se puede afirmar que se han logrado parte de los objetivos planteados inicialmente. Concreamente ha quedado demostrado que se pueden sintetizar nanopartículas metálicas de metales nobles (platino y paladio) en membranas de fibra hueca de micro- y ultrafiltración siguiendo dos metodologías diferentes: modificación fotoquímica de polímeros y deposición de multicapas de polielectrolitos. Los nuevos materiales son efectivos en la catálisis de reducción de un compuesto modelo (4-nitrofenol con borohidruro de sodio) y, en general, los resultados han sido satisfactorios. Sin embargo, se ha puesto de manifiesto que el uso de un reactivo que genera hidrógeno gas en contacto con la solución acuosa dificulta enormemente la implementación de la reacción catalítica al ser el medio de la membrana una matriz porosa. Así, como conclusión principal se puede decir que se han encontrado las limitaciones de esta aproximación y se sugieren dos posibilidades de continuidad: la utilización de las membranas sintetizadas en contactores gas-líquido o bien el estudio y optimización del sistema de membrana en configuración de membranas planas, un objetivo más asequible dada su menor complejidad. Esta investigación se ha realizado en el seno del “Laboratoire de Génie Chimique” de Toulouse y del Departamento de Química de la Michigan State University y ha sido posible gracias a un proyecto financiado por la “Agence National pour la Recherce” y al programa PERMEANT entre el CNRS y la NSF.

Report for the scientific sojourn at the Université de Bourgogne, France, from July until October 2007..Surlie ageing after second fermentation is a fundamental operation in the production of quality sparkling wine like Cava and Champagne. Recently, the importance of the interaction between wine and lees cell surface has been reported. Cell surface properties depending on wall biochemical composition are major determinants in microbial interactions, having important repercussions in several technological aspects. Sorption and flocculation are especially important in sparkling wine production, and are governed by distinct cell surface properties. The aim of the present research carried out during the four months of the stage was to know the implication of lees surface modifications occurring during surlie ageing in sparkling wine quality and elaboration. The relationship between physico-chemical properties such as hydrophobicity, charge and electron-donor characteristics, and the yeast surface sorption capacities, we determined these factors in a model system. Then, real industrial lees samples were investigated. The surface properties of sparkling wine lees from the same strain of Saccharomyces cerevisiae were characterized according to the time of surlie ageing, and their possible influence on lees sorption and flocculation capacity was evaluated. La innovación abierta (Open innovation) se presenta como una oportunidad para combinar los conocimientos internos de la venta de servicios vacacionales combinado con los conocimientos de tecnologías innovadoras. El desarrollo de una librería visual adaptativa pretende ser una solución a la tendencia de cambio actual y a las dificultades de integración de los servicios vacacionales. En el transcurso del proyecto se desarrolla un marco de trabajo que permita cumplir los objetivos marcados para la librería.

En aquest article s'aporten proves de l'impacte positiu que té l'aplicació de les tecnologies de la informació i la comunicació (TIC) en l'empresa turística catalana. La transcendència que en els darrers anys ha adquirit el mercat turístic català en el context europeu el converteix en un laboratori d'anàlisi idoni per al sector. Els resultats obtinguts posen de manifest que l'ús d'aquestes tecnologies s'acompanya d'un major grau d'internacionalització de l'empresa, el desenvolupament de canvis organitzatius i la implantació de noves estratègies competitives, cosa que dóna lloc a un model de negoci allunyat de les concepcions tradicionals del sector. A més, l'ús estratègic de les TIC afavoreix l'ús de mà d'obra més qualificada, un servei més personalitzat i una major proximitat a proveïdors i distribuïdors. Tanmateix, és en el procés d'innovació empresarial on l'impacte positiu de les TIC és percep més, atès que el seu ús ha contribuït a superar alguns dels obstacles existents, a interioritzar el procés en el si de l'empresa i a fer més partícips els mateixos treballadors, i això ha donat com a resultat una àmplia diversitat d'innovacions de tota mena (de producte, de procés i organitzatives). La participació en xarxes de cooperació, el fet de tenir treballadors amb un nivell educatiu elevat i l'aplicació intensiva de les TIC han estat elements indispensables en aquest procés innovador. Finalment, gràcies a l'ús de les TIC i el seu impacte en la innovació, però també al canvi organitzatiu dins l'empresa, s'han millorat els registres de productivitat, amb la qual cosa s'afavoreix una major competitivitat en un context canviant i de forta pressió de l'entorn.

The movement of Open Educational Resources (OER) is one of the most important trends that are helping education through the Internet worldwide. "Tecnológico de Monterrey" (http://tecvirtual.itesm.mx/) in Mexico, with other Mexican higher education institutions, is creating an Internet/web based repository of OERs and Mobile Resources for the instruction and development of educational researchers at undergraduate, Master's and Doctoral level. There is a lack of open educational resources and material available at the Internet that can help and assist the development and education of educational researchers in Spanish speaking countries. This OER repository is part of a project that is experimenting new technology for the delivery of OERs from one repository (http://catedra.ruv.itesm.mx/) through an indexed OER catalog (http://www.temoa.info/) to mobile devices (Ipod, Iphone, MP3, MP4). This paper presentation will describe and comment about this project: outcomes, best practices, difficulties and technological constraints.

Based on a discussion of the background, features and limitations of open online courses, this paper describes a technological solution to support their offering, built on online tools that don't require self-managed hosting. This is a proof of concept that intends to highlight the possibilities and obstacles related to this kind of educational practice in a Latin American context.

The present paper shows de design of an experimental study conducted with large groups using educational innovation methodologies at the Polytechnic University of Madrid. Concretely, we have chosen the course titled "History and Politics of Sports" that belongs to the Physical Activity and Sport Science Degree. The selection of this course is because the syllabus is basically theoretical and there are four large groups of freshmen students who do not have previous experiences in a teaching-learning process based on educational innovation. It is hope that the results of this research can be extrapolated to other courses with similar characteristics.

Aquest estudi té com a objectiu principal analitzar les transformacions que s'esdevenen al voltant de la incorporació d'innovacions tecnològiques de l'entorn de les TIC en els processos d'atenció al ciutadà per part de les administracions públiques. Les transformacions que hem analitzat tenen a veure amb tres dimensions que hem considerat bàsiques. D'una banda, ens hem centrat en els canvis que es produeixen en la forma en què els ciutadans (com a principals, tot i que no únics, usuaris) i l'administració es relacionen entre sí. De l'altra hem analitzat les transformacions que s'esdevenen en el funcionament intern i en la pròpia organització de l'administració arran de les transformacions dels canals de comunicació amb els usuaris. Per últim, hem considerat els canvis en la forma de gestionar (dissenyar, planificar, organitzar i dur a terme) el canvi i la innovació, tenint en compte especialment els rols dels diferents actors (no només públics) que hi participen. La recerca es recolza en un ampli estudi empíric sobre la Generalitat de Catalunya i en un estudi compartiu internacional sobre el Quebec, Emillia-Romagna i Escòcia.

Resum en anglès del projecte de recerca L'empresa xarxa a Catalunya. TIC, productivitat, competitivitat, salaris i beneficis a l'empresa catalana té com a objectiu principal constatar que la consolidació d'un nou model estratègic, organitzatiu i d'activitat empresarial, vinculat amb la inversió i l'ús de les TIC (o empresa xarxa), modifica substancialment els patrons de comportament dels resultats empresarials, en especial la productivitat, la competitivitat, les retribucions dels treballadors i el benefici. La contrastació empírica de les hipòtesis de treball l'hem feta per mitjà de les dades d'una enquesta a una mostra representativa de 2.038 empreses catalanes. Amb la perspectiva de l'impacte de la inversió i l'ús de les TIC no s'aprecia una relació directa entre els processos d'innovació digital i els resultats de l'activitat de l'empresa catalana. En aquest sentit, hem hagut de segmentar el teixit productiu català per a buscar les organitzacions en què el procés de coinnovació tecnològica digital i organitzativa és més present i en què la intensitat de l'ús del coneixement és un recurs molt freqüent per a poder copsar impactes rellevants en els principals resultats empresarials. Això és així perquè l'economia catalana, avui, presenta una estructura productiva dual.
