El COR és un component del Corpus de Català Contemporani de la Universitat de Barcelona (CCCUB), un arxiu de corpus de llengua catalana oral contemporània que ha estat confegit pel grup de recerca Grup d'Estudi de la Variació (GEV) amb la finalitat de contribuir a l'estudi de la variació dialectal, social i funcional en la llengua catalana. A simple model to describe the thixotropic behavior of paints.

We propose a simple rheological model to describe the thixotropic behavior of paints, since the classical hysteresis area, which is usually used, is not enough to evaluate thixotropy. The model is based on the assumption that viscosity is a direct measure of the structural level of the paint. The model depends on two equations: the Cross-Carreau equation to describe the equilibrium viscosity and a second order kinetic equation to express the time dependence of viscosity. Two characteristic thixotropic times are differentiated: one for the net structure breakdown, which is defined as a power law function of shear rate, and an other for the net structure buildup, which is not dependent on the shear rate. The knowledge of both kinetic processes can be used to improve the quality and applicability of paints. Five representative commercial protective marine paints are tested. They are based on chlorinated rubber, acrylic, alkyd, vinyl, and epoxy resins. The temperature dependence of the rheological behavior is also studied with the temperature ranging from 5 ºC to 35 ºC. It is found that the paints exhibit both shear thinning and thixotropic behavior. The model fits satisfactorily the thixotropy of the studied paints. It is also able to predict the thixotropy dependence on temperature. Both viscosity and the degree of thixotropy increase as the temperature decreases.

From caging to rouse dynamics in polymer melts with intramolecular barriers: a critical test of the mode coupling theory

By means of computer simulations and solution of the equations of the mode coupling theory (MCT),we investigate the role of the intramolecular barriers on several dynamic aspects of nonentangled polymers. The investigated dynamic range extends from the caging regime characteristic of glass-formers to the relaxation of the chain Rouse modes. We review our recent work on this question,provide new results, and critically discuss the limitations of the theory. Solutions of the MCT for the structural relaxation reproduce qualitative trends of simulations for weak and moderate barriers. However, a progressive discrepancy is revealed as the limit of stiff chains is approached. This dis-agreement does not seem related with dynamic heterogeneities, which indeed are not enhanced by increasing barrier strength. It is not connected either with the breakdown of the convolution approximation for three-point static correlations, which retains its validity for stiff chains. These findings suggest the need of an improvement of the MCT equations for polymer melts. Concerning the relaxation of the chain degrees of freedom, MCT provides a microscopic basis for time scales from chain reorientation down to the caging regime. It rationalizes, from first principles, the observed deviations from the Rouse model on increasing the barrier strength. These include anomalous scaling of relaxation times, long-time plateaux, and nonmonotonous wavelength dependence of the mode correlators.

Flush, de Virginia Woolf, en Català i la carrera literària de Roser Cardús

Flush (1933), de Virginia Woolf, protagonitzada pel gos de la poeta Elisabeth Barrett Browning, es va traduir al català cinc anys després, a Edicions de la Rosa dels Vents, quan encara es podia veure a la cartellera barcelonina la pel·lícula que narrava la història del matrimoni de poetes Browning, The Barrets of Wimpole Street, estrenada l�any 1934 i dirigida per Sidney Franklin. També havia arribat a Catalunya la traducció francesa de Charles Mauron, publicada l�any 1935. Això va fer que l�any 1938, malgrat el conflicte bèl·lic, hi hagués un context de recepció propici a aquesta traducció, encarregada per l�editor Josep Janés i Oliver. En aquest article donem a conèixer qui era la noia de divuit anys que va realitzar la traducció al català a partir de la traducció francesa, Roser Cardús i Malagarriga (1920-1974), i en descrivim la carrera com a escriptora i com a traductora.

Do Schools Discriminate Against Homosexual Parents? Evidence from an Internet Field Experiment

The recognition of homosexual rights is a controversial issue in many countries. Spain was the third country in the world (after Netherlands and Belgium) to introduce a law recognizing homosexual marriage and adoption of children. In this paper, we examine for the first time whether schools are more hesitant to give feedback to homosexual parents during children's pre-registration period in Spain. In order to do that, we designed an internet field experiment to be conducted in schools. We created three types of fictitious couples; one heterosexual, one male homosexual and one female homosexual, and send emails to schools making sexual orientation explicit. Our results show that men homosexual couples had a significant lower probability to receive and answer than heterosexual couples (22.5 percentage points less). No statistically significant differences in the response rate were found between female homosexual and heterosexual couples. This result suggests that male homosexual couples might be penalized because of the lack of a maternal figure. Keywords: Discrimination, field experiment, schools, homosexual rights. La 'S.A. de Extractos Tánicos' de Barcelona: un proyecto empresarial a través del quebracho paraguayo

[spa] Se analiza la "S. A. de Extractos Tánicos" fundada en el Pueblo Nuevo de Barcelona en el año 1909 por los hermanos Pedro Pablo, Fernando y Carlos de Corral y Tomé. El matrimonio de Pedro Pablo de Corral y Tomé con la rosarina Clara Margarita Casado Sastre nos permite reconstruir la vinculación familiar y empresarial entre la empresa barcelonesa dedicada a la importación de la "quiebra hacha" durante la primera mitad del siglo XX, y la "S. A. Carlos Casado Limitada, Compañía de Tierras", dedicada al quebracho colorado del Gran Chaco latinoamericano.

El derecho a contraer matrimonio entre personas del mismo sexo. Algunas reflexiones a propósito de la sentencia del Tribunal Constitucional 198/2012

La sentencia del Tribunal Constitucional 198/2012 constituye el último eslabón en el debate jurídico abierto con la promulgación de la ley 13/2005, por la cual se posibilita en nuestro ordenamiento que dos personas de un mismo sexo puedan contraer matrimonio, equiparándolos, a todos los efectos legales, a los matrimonios heterosexuales. La declaración de constitucionalidad de esta norma, viene a despojar al matrimonio -contemplado en el artículo 32 de la CE- de uno de sus elementos que durante siglos lo ha caracterizado: su naturaleza heterosexual, de acuerdo con la imagen que, en la actualidad, tiene de esta institución la mayoría de la sociedad. Y, sobre todo, supone una equiparación en el ejercicio de un derecho constitucional a un colectivo que por razón de su orientación sexual había sido excluido de esta institución y 'condenado' a constituir otras formas de convivencia diferentes del matrimonio.

Effects of punishment in a mobile population playing the prisoner’s dilemma game

We deal with a system of prisoner’s dilemma players undergoing continuous motion in a two-dimensional plane. In contrast to previous work, we introduce altruistic punishment after the game. We find punishing only a few of the cooperator-defector interactions is enough to lead the system to a cooperative state in environments where otherwise defection would take over the population. This happens even with soft nonsocial punishment (where both cooperators and defectors punish other players, a behavior observed in many human populations). For high enough mobilities or temptations to defect, low rates of social punishment can no longer avoid the breakdown of cooperation

A revision of the revaluation index of Spanish pensions

This article reviews the methodological aspects of the revaluation index of Spanish pensions developed following Law 23/2013 which regulates the sustainability factor and revaluation index of the Social Security pension system. From a gradual breakdown of the elements that make up the revaluation index, an exposition is given of the formal and implementation problems it involves. Finally, its use is illustrated with numerical results.

Estudi sobre la qualitat de vida de les persones amb demència ateses a la Unitat d'avaluació de deteriorament cognitiu de l'Hospital de la Santa Creu

OBJECTIU: determinar la qualitat de vida de les persones amb demència ateses en una unitat avaluadora de deteriorament cognitiu. MÈTODE: estudi descriptiu transversal amb una mostra consecutiva no probabilística, formada per 42 persones amb demència tipus Alzheimer lleu o moderada i els seus cuidadors. La Qualitat de Vida (QV) es va avaluar amb el qüestionari QoL-AD (Quality of Life Alzheimer’s Disease) en les versions per al pacient (QoL-ADp) i per al cuidador (QoL-ADc). RESULTATS: la mitjana de puntuació del QoL-ADp va ser de 35,38 punts (DE = 5,24) i del QoL-Adc, de 30,60 (DE 5,33). La diferència entre aquests resultats és significativa (p<0,001). Els pacients amb simptomatologia depressiva i els seus cuidadors van puntuar significativament més baix el QoL-AD (p<0,001). En les freqüències per ítems del QoL-ADp s’observa que: més del 75% van valorar com a bona/excel·lent les condicions de vida, família, matrimoni/relació estreta, vida social, situació financera i vida en general; el 61% valoraren bona/excel·lent la capacitat per realitzar tasques a casa; prop del 50% pensava que l’estat d’ànim, l’energia, la salut física, la capacitat per fer coses per diversió i la visió de si mateixos era dolenta/regular, i el 85,7% opinava que la seva memòria era dolenta/regular. CONCLUSIONS: els resultats obtinguts en el QoL-AD no difereixen dels obtinguts en altres investigacions. Suggereixen que les intervencions que genera l’avaluació de la QV en la pràctica clínica inclouen aspectes centrats pròpiament en la malaltia i aspectes vinculats amb les relacions socials.
