Aplicación de un estudio de usabilidad en bibliotecas digitales : la Biblioteca Virtual de la UOC

The Open University of Catalonia (UOC) has conducted a study of operability of its user interfaces, creating for this purpose different work groups that have analyzed different casuistries. One of these groups focused on the study and analysis of the usability of the Virtual Library's website, with the objective of obtaining benefits for our users. As a result of this analysis, an important qualitative jump is occurring in the new implementation of the website of the UOC's Virtual Library, prioritizing the role of users from different points of view: ease of navigation, management of profiles and the services associated to these and the restructuring of the information architecture, with the final aim of facilitating access to the resources and the services offered from the Library, advocating in this way for their quality and improvement.

Las estanterías virtuales : un nuevo espacio en el aula

La Biblioteca de la Universitat Oberta de Catalunya ve oferint des de fa diversos semestres les anomenades Prestatgeries virtuals, un servei que se situa dins de l'aula virtual i que serveix per posar a disposició dels estudiants tota una sèrie de recursos documental que li faciliten el seguiment i aprenentatge de les assignatures a les quals està matriculat.

Implementació d'un sistema de generació i tramesa automàtica d'avisos de retorn per correu electrònic com a complement del mòdul de gestió de préstec

SAVIA (Servei d'AVIsos Adhoc) és un sistema compost per una sèrie de programes en PERL desenvolupats per la Biblioteca de la UOC que gestionen la tramesa per correu electrònic dels avisos de retorn de préstec dels documents de la Biblioteca, mitjançant els programes de l'aplicatiu VTLS destinats a la creació de les notificacions impreses. Aquests programes flexibilitzen la comunicació entre la Biblioteca i els usuaris donat que permeten el tractament individualitzat de les trameses per tipologies d'usuari i la incorporació d'addendes temporals als missatges, definides i controlades per la persona propietària del procés del préstec.

La formación de usuarios en una biblioteca virtual universitaria

En un context d'educació a distància i amb usuaris virtuals, la formació en l'ús dels serveis i recursos d'una biblioteca universitària requereix d'una adaptació de les formes tradicionalment ofertes des de les Biblioteques presencials al nou entorn amb mètodes nous i innovadors. En aquest sentit, la Biblioteca de l'UOC ha desenvolupat noves vies de comunicació i nous formats per poder difondre serveis i per formar els nostres usuaris en l'ús d'aquests. La característica comuna de la majoria d'ells, és la de ser 'formació a distància' que es du a terme a través d'un 'Campus virtual'. Les diferents opcions seran analitzades en la comunicació així com les problemàtiques i avantatges que presenten els diversos mètodes de formació duts a terme per les biblioteques universitàries en entorns virtuals.

WePreserve 2009: DPE/Planets/CASPAR/nestor Joint Training Event: The Preservation challenge: basic concepts and practical applications (Barcelona, 23-27 març 2009)

Reseña del congreso WePreserve 2009 que tuvo lugar los pasados 23 al 27 de marzo en Barcelona, organizadopor la Facultad de Biblioteconomía y Documentación de la Universitat de Barcelona, con la colaboración del Institut d'Estudis Catalans, la Biblioteca de Catalunya y el Consorci de Biblioteques de Barcelona. El seminario 2009 WePreserve se celebra anualmente desde el año 2007 y participan todas las figuras de referencia europeas en materia de investigación en sistemas y metodologías que garantizan la preservación digital de los documentos: Digital Preservation Europe (DPE), Preservation and Long-term Access Through Networked Services (Planets), Cultural Artistic and Scientific Knowledge for Preservation, Access and Retrieval (CASPAR), y Network of expertise in Digital long-term preservation (nestor).

La gestió dels recursos documentals a les aules de la UOC es fa de manera compartida entre el professorat i la Biblioteca de la Universitat. La responsabilitat dels continguts que trobem com a 'recursos de l'aula' i de l'actualització d'aquests recau en el professor/a responsable de l'assignatura que és qui decideix quins recursos electrònics han de tenir les aules de les seves assignatures i comunica a la Biblioteca aquests recursos i les possibles actualitzacions i/o modificacions que cal fer-hi. La gestió d'aquests recursos que es fa des de la biblioteca és un element clau perquè, a través d'aquest procés, la biblioteca esdevingui un element realment facilitador de l'aprenentatge i la docència, i situa la biblioteca com un element central en el model d'aprenentatge de la UOC. S'inclou al final de la presentació un seguit de recomanacions per a l'èxit dels recursos documentals a les aules virtuals.

La gestió dels recursos documentals a les aules de la Universitat Oberta de Catalunya

The management of the documental resources in the classrooms of the UOC is shared between the teaching staff and the Library of the University. The responsibility of the contents that we find as "resources of the classroom" and updating these falls on the teacher responsible for the course which is the one who decides which electronic resources must have the classrooms of his/her courses and communicates these resources and the possible updates or modifications to the Library. The management of these resources done from the library is a key element because, through this process, the library becomes a really facilitating element of the learning and the teaching, and places the library like a central element in the learning model of the UOC. A series of recommendations for the success of the documental resources in the virtual classrooms are included at the end of the presentation.

L'OPAC de la Biblioteca de la UOC, avançant cap a l'OPAC social

La Biblioteca de la UOC ha añadido una serie de mejoras a su OPAC. El objetivo ha sido incorporar las ventajas del OPAC social a un producto comercial cercado, como es Millennium.Estas mejoras permiten enriquecer la información proporcionada por el registro y dotar a los usuarios de herramientas que los permitan compartir la Biblioteca, sus servicios y sus contenidos.En este póster se detalla la implementación de las herramientas de Wikipedia, Google Libros, Addthis y LibraryThing for Libraries en el OPACO de Millennium.

M-Library in an m-University : changing Models in the Open University of Catalonia

The general perspective of M-technologies and M-Services at the Spanish universities is not still in a very high level when we are ending the first decade of the 21st century. Some Universities and some of their libraries are starting to try out with M-technologies, but are still far from a model of massive exploitation, less than in some other countries. A deep study is needed to know the main reasons, study that we will not do in this paper. This general perspective does not mean that there are no significant initiatives which start to trust in M-technologies from Universities and their libraries. Models based in M-technologies make more sense than ever in open universities and in open libraries. That's the reason why the UOC's Library began in late 90s its first experiences in the M-Technologies and M-Libraries developments. In 1999 the appropriate technology offered the opportunity to carry out the first pilot test with SMS, and then applying the WAP technology. At those moments we managed to link-up mobile phones to the OPAC through a WAP system that allowed searching the catalogue by categories and finding the final location of a document, offering also the address of the library in which the user could loan it. Since then, UOC (and its library) directs its efforts towards adapting the offer of services to all sorts of M-devices used by end users. Left the WAP technology, nowadays the library is experimenting with some new devices like e-books, and some new services to get more feedback through the OPAC and metalibrary search products. We propose the case of Open University of Catalonia, in two levels: M-services applied in the library and M-technologies applied in some other university services and resources.

Tècniques de Webmetria : anàlisi de logs i Google Analytics per a la obtenció de variables mètriques del web de la Biblioteca Virtual de la Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (UOC)

This presentation aims to make understandable the use and application context of two Webometrics techniques, the logs analysis and Google Analytics, which currently coexist in the Virtual Library of the UOC. In this sense, first of all it is provided a comprehensive introduction to webometrics and then it is analysed the case of the UOC's Virtual Library focusing on the assimilation of these techniques and the considerations underlying their use, and covering in a holistic way the process of gathering, processing and data exploitation. Finally there are also provided guidelines for the interpretation of the metric variables obtained.

The deployment of an e-book consultation and loan service : the experience of the Open University of Catalonia Library

La Biblioteca de la UOC (UOC Library) ha ofert durant tres mesos (octubre-desembre 09), en fase de prova pilot, un servei de consulta i préstec de lectors de llibres electrònics (e-readers). Aquest nou desplegament s'ha desenvolupat en consonància amb l'aposta general de la Universitat en innovació en tecnologies aplicades a l'educació, i la voluntat de potenciar les col·leccions de llibres electrònics i l'ús dels dispositius de lectura de llibres electrònics com una extensió més de la tecnologia del Campus 5.0, en el suport a l'aprenentatge dels seus estudiants durant la seva formació a la Universitat. Aquest treball presenta en detall les especificacions de la prova pilot, a més de contenir una anàlisi i avaluació dels resultats obtinguts: punts forts i punts febles, relació dels aspectes a millorar i modificar, de cara a la consolidació final del servei.

What should a virtual University Library environment look like?

Over the past year, the Open University of Catalonia library has been designing its new website with this question in mind. Our main concern has been how to integrate the library in the student day to day study routine to not to be only a satellite tool. We present the design of the website that, in a virtual library like ours, it is not only a website but the whole library itself. The central point of the web is my library, a space that associates the library resources with the student's curriculum and their course subjects. There the students can save the resources as favourites, comment or share them. They have also access to all the services the library offers them. The resources are imported from multiple tools such as Millennium, SFX, Metalib and Dspace to the Drupal CMS. Then the resources' metadata can be enriched with other contextual information from other sources, for example the course subjects. And finally they can be exported in standard, open data formats making them available for linked data applications.

L'objectiu de la ponència és presentar la primera biblioteca virtual de Catalunya, a partir de l'exposició del desenvolupament de la seva planificació, els serveis bibliotecaris que ofereix i els mitjans amb què compta l'usuari per a rebre'ls.
