El abrigo del Filador (Margalef de Montsant, Tarragona) y su contextualizacion cultural y cronologica en el Nordeste Peninsular

En este articulo se pasa revista, de forma resumida, a 20 años de excavaciones en el abrigo del Filador y se dan a conocer los resultados más importantes (sedimentología, fauna, polen, industria, dataciones, etc..), obtenidos con la aplicación de nuevas técnicas de estudio desde 1979. Del mismo modo replanteamos su ubicación cronocultural dentro del marco geográfico del NE peninsular a partir de las dataciones radiocarbónicas conocidas hasta el momento. Se trata del primer trabajo de síntesis sobre el yacimiento realizado con posterioridad al estudio de J. Fortea (Fortea 1973); el Filador sigue siendo un referente obligado del Epipaleolítico de la zona en tanto que muestra la mayoría de las facies cronoculturales que definen esta fase en el NE ibérico.

Plant diversity across five vegetation belts in the Pyrenees (Catalonia, Spain)

In this paper we analyze the size and habitat partitioning of the vascular floras of five areas of the NE Iberian Peninsula, representing five distinct vegetation belts and three floristic regions: Mediterranean (basal belt), medio-European (submontane and montane belts) and Boreo-Alpine (subalpine and alpine belts). Each area covered over 1000 ha, and was fairly uniform in terms of potential vegetation, bedrock and bioclimate. They excluded large villages and field areas, the landscape being mainly natural or moderately anthropized.

Ocho dudas razonables sobre la necesidad del voto electrónico

En un momento en que se generaliza el uso de las diferentes soluciones de voto electrónico, parece razonable hacer balance sobre cuáles son los principales obstáculos que esta «última revolución electoral» debe superar. Antes, sin embargo, consideramos necesario discutir los principales malentendidos que se han creado en torno al voto electrónico, así como intentar aclarar cuáles son los motivos que se aducen para su implementación. A partir de aquí, se presentan ocho grandes dudas a las que todavía no se ha dado una respuesta satisfactoria en su conjunto, si bien una buena parte de estos aspectos han sido objeto de especial atención en algunas experiencias de voto electrónico.

Klammt's elastic open activator: Ricketts' cephalometrics results

The purpose of this study is to investigate the orthodontic and orthopaedic real effects of the Klammt's Elastic Open Activator (EOA) in 25 Class II Division 1 patients in growing period. We wanted to determine statistically the cephalometrics changes produced in the patients, comparing the lateral cranium teleradiographies we took for the diagnosis with the ones we took at the end of treatment. At the end of this study we confirm that by using the EOA we obtained the desired effects, especially reducing the molar relation 2.53 mm and the overjet 2.56 mm. The EOA corrected the inclination and protrusion of incisors, although we cannot avoid the use of fixed appliances to round off. The reduction of 2.48 mm of facial convexity stands out as the most important skeletal effect; the facial depth angle increases 0.8 degree, and the maxillary depth decreases 1.16 degrees. The length of the mandibular corpus also increases 6.7 mm, although this change is mainly due to the growth of the patient. The changes in the aesthetic profile do not stand out

Kernel-PCA data integration with enhanced interpretability

Background Nowadays, combining the different sources of information to improve the biological knowledge available is a challenge in bioinformatics. One of the most powerful methods for integrating heterogeneous data types are kernel-based methods. Kernel-based data integration approaches consist of two basic steps: firstly the right kernel is chosen for each data set; secondly the kernels from the different data sources are combined to give a complete representation of the available data for a given statistical task. Results We analyze the integration of data from several sources of information using kernel PCA, from the point of view of reducing dimensionality. Moreover, we improve the interpretability of kernel PCA by adding to the plot the representation of the input variables that belong to any dataset. In particular, for each input variable or linear combination of input variables, we can represent the direction of maximum growth locally, which allows us to identify those samples with higher/lower values of the variables analyzed. Conclusions The integration of different datasets and the simultaneous representation of samples and variables together give us a better understanding of biological knowledge.

El mas la Sala i la gestió del torrent de Folgueroles (segles XVIII-XX)

Al llarg dels segles XVIII, XIX i XX, el mas la Sala de Folgueroles ha exercit un extens control sobre la gestió de l'aigua del torrent de Folgueroles a través de diverses iniciatives, entre les quals destaquen, per una banda, la conversió de vint-i-dues quarteres de terres i conreu en hortes cultivades per més d'un centenar d'arrendataris del poble, les verdures i hortalisses de les quals anaven destinades a l'autoconsum; i, per l'altra, ja entrat el segle XX, la constitució d'una societat per part de Josep Maria Bru de Sala i Serra, concessionària del subministrament d'aigua potable a Folgueroles. Ambdues activitats exemplifiquen l'orientació empresarial de la burgesia agrària catalana durant l'època contemporània.

Long-term X-ray variability of the microquasar system LS5039/RX J1826.2-1450

We report on the results of the spectral and timing analysis of a BeppoSAX observation of the microquasar system LS 5039/RX J1826.2-1450. The source was found in a low-flux state with Fx(1-10 keV)= 4.7 x 10^{-12} erg cm^{-2} s^{-1}, which represents almost one order of magnitude lower than a previous RXTE observation 2.5 years before. The 0.1--10 keV spectrum is described by an absorbed power-law continuum with photon-number spectral index Gamma=1.8+-0.2 and hydrogen column density of NH=1.0^{+0.4}_{-0.3} x 10^{22} cm^{-2}. According to the orbital parameters of the system the BeppoSAX observation covers the time of an X-ray eclipse should one occur. However, the 1.6-10 keV light curve does not show evidence for such an event, which allows us to give an upper limit to the inclination of the system. The low X-ray flux detected during this observation is interpreted as a decrease in the mass accretion rate onto the compact object due to a decrease in the mass-loss rate from the primary.

Deep radio images of the HEGRA and Whipple TeV sources in the Cygnus OB2 region.

The modern generation of Cherenkov telescopes has revealed a new population of gamma-ray sources in the Galaxy. Some of them have been identified with previously known X-ray binary systems while other remain without clear counterparts a lower energies. Our initial goal here was reporting on extensive radio observations of the first extended and yet unidentified source, namely TeV J2032+4130. This object was originally detected by the HEGRA telescope in the direction of the Cygnus OB2 region and its nature has been a matter of debate during the latest years. The situation has become more complex with the Whipple and MILAGRO telescopes new TeV detections in the same field which could be consistent with the historic HEGRA source, although a different origin cannot be ruled out. Aims.We aim to pursue our radio exploration of the TeV J2032+4130 position that we initiated in a previous paper but taking now into account the latest results from new Whipple and MILAGRO TeV telescopes. The data presented here are an extended follow up of our previous work. Methods.Our investigation is mostly based on interferometric radio observations with the Giant Metre Wave Radio Telescope (GMRT) close to Pune (India) and the Very Large Array (VLA) in New Mexico (USA). We also conducted near infrared observations with the 3.5 m telescope and the OMEGA2000 camera at the Centro Astronómico Hispano Alemán (CAHA) in Almería (Spain). Results.We present deep radio maps centered on the TeV J2032+4130 position at different wavelengths. In particular, our 49 and 20 cm maps cover a field of view larger than half a degree that fully includes the Whipple position and the peak of MILAGRO emission. Our most important result here is a catalogue of 153 radio sources detected at 49 cm within the GMRT antennae primary beam with a full width half maximum (FWHM) of 43 arc-minute. Among them, peculiar sources inside the Whipple error ellipse are discussed in detail, including a likely double-double radio galaxy and a one-sided jet source of possible blazar nature. This last object adds another alternative counterpart possibility to be considered for both the HEGRA, Whipple and MILAGRO emission. Moreover, our multi-configuration VLA images reveal the non-thermal extended emission previously reported by us with improved angular resolution. Its non-thermal spectral index is also confirmed thanks to matching beam observations at the 20 and 6 cm wavelengths.

Mesozoic geology of Cape Shirreff, Livingston Island, South Shetland Islands, Antarctica.

Al Cap de Shirr e ff (Fig. 1) hi aflora una successió volcànica de com a mínim 450 m de potència, constituïda principalment per laves i, en menor proporció, bretxes vulcanoclàstiques (Fig. 2). Les laves són basalts olivínics subalcalins i andesites basàltiques, que generalment tenen un aspecte massiu. Tot i això, la successió volcànica localment forma una alternança decimètrica de nivells durs i tous, amb potències va r i a bles i presència local de discordances angulars i onlaps, que reflecteixen geometries deposicionals complexes. A la zona nord del Cap de Shirr e ff hi ha aflorament de bretxes vulcanoclàstiques d"aspecte massiu, que localment tenen intercalacions de laves...

Sobre les avellanoses als Pirineus catalans

Els bosquets de Corylus avellana dels Pirineus Catalans representen, malgrat llur fisiognomía uniforme, fases de degradació o de reconstitució de diversos boscos caducifolis. Atenent a aquest fet i a llur composició florística poc específica, sembla convenient de tractar-los com a variants de Corylus del Buxo-Quercetum pubescentis, del Buxo-Fagetum, del Brachypodio-Fraxinetum,... Cal excloure potser d'aquesta generalització L¿Hepatico-Coryletum, comunitat de difícil filiació i caracterització sintaxonómiques, pròpia de l'Alta Cerdanya i del Conflent. I el Scillo-Fagetum actaeo-coryletosum, subass. nova, que representa, igual que el síntàxon anterior, una vicariant de les fagedes en valls internes pirinenques amb clima continentalitzat, mancades de faig.

Todas las funciones que se realizan en la cavidad oral (respiración, succión, deglución, masticación y fonación), estimulan el crecimiento y desarrollo del tercio inferior de la cara. Por ello, el tipo de lactancia, así como los hábitos orales disfuncionales, pueden influir sobre la morfología definitiva de los maxilares y de la oclusión dentaria.

La caries del biberón es la aparición brusca de caries en los incisivos y molares temporales, relacionadas con el hábito de succionar el chupete o el biberón, impregnados de sustancias cariogénicas. Afecta a los niños en las primeras etapas de la vida. Los dientes de leche son fundamentales para diferentes funciones como la masticación y el habla. Este trabajo revisa cuáles son sus causas más comunes y las medidas preventivas más indicadas.
