In arbitrary dimensional spaces the Lie algebra of the Poincaré group is seen to be a subalgebra of the complex Galilei algebra, while the Galilei algebra is a subalgebra of Poincar algebra. The usual contraction of the Poincar to the Galilei group is seen to be equivalent to a certain coordinate transformation.

A Lagrangian treatment of the quantization of first class Hamiltonian systems with constraints and Hamiltonian linear and quadratic in the momenta, respectively, is performed. The first reduce and then quantize and the first quantize and then reduce (Diracs) methods are compared. A source of ambiguities in this latter approach is pointed out and its relevance on issues concerning self-consistency and equivalence with the first reduce method is emphasized. One of the main results is the relation between the propagator obtained la Dirac and the propagator in the full space. As an application of the formalism developed, quantization on coset spaces of compact Lie groups is presented. In this case it is shown that a natural selection of a Dirac quantization allows for full self-consistency and equivalence. Finally, the specific case of the propagator on a two-dimensional sphere S2 viewed as the coset space SU(2)/U(1) is worked out. 1995 American Institute of Physics.

A new arena for the dynamics of spacetime is proposed, in which the basic quantum variable is the two-point distance on a metric space. The scaling dimension (that is, the Kolmogorov capacity) in the neighborhood of each point then defines in a natural way a local concept of dimension. We study our model in the region of parameter space in which the resulting spacetime is not too different from a smooth manifold.

We demonstrate that the self-similarity of some scale-free networks with respect to a simple degree-thresholding renormalization scheme finds a natural interpretation in the assumption that network nodes exist in hidden metric spaces. Clustering, i.e., cycles of length three, plays a crucial role in this framework as a topological reflection of the triangle inequality in the hidden geometry. We prove that a class of hidden variable models with underlying metric spaces are able to accurately reproduce the self-similarity properties that we measured in the real networks. Our findings indicate that hidden geometries underlying these real networks are a plausible explanation for their observed topologies and, in particular, for their self-similarity with respect to the degree-based renormalization.

We develop a statistical theory to characterize correlations in weighted networks. We define the appropriate metrics quantifying correlations and show that strictly uncorrelated weighted networks do not exist due to the presence of structural constraints. We also introduce an algorithm for generating maximally random weighted networks with arbitrary P(k,s) to be used as null models. The application of our measures to real networks reveals the importance of weights in a correct understanding and modeling of these heterogeneous systems.

We characterize the approach regions so that the non-tangential maximal function is of weak-type on potential spaces, for which we use a simple argument involving Carleson measure estimates.

A new model for dealing with decision making under risk by considering subjective and objective information in the same formulation is here presented. The uncertain probabilistic weighted average (UPWA) is also presented. Its main advantage is that it unifies the probability and the weighted average in the same formulation and considering the degree of importance that each case has in the analysis. Moreover, it is able to deal with uncertain environments represented in the form of interval numbers. We study some of its main properties and particular cases. The applicability of the UPWA is also studied and it is seen that it is very broad because all the previous studies that use the probability or the weighted average can be revised with this new approach. Focus is placed on a multi-person decision making problem regarding the selection of strategies by using the theory of expertons.

Following a scheme of Levin we describe the values that functions in Fock spaces take on lattices of critical density in terms of both the size of the values and a cancelation condition that involves discrete versions of the Cauchy and Beurling-Ahlfors transforms.

We give a necessary and sufficient condition for a sequence [ak}k in the unit ball of C° to be interpolating for the class A~°° of holomorphic functions with polynomial growth. The condition, which goes along the lines of the ones given by Berenstein and Li for some weighted spaces of entire functions and by Amar for H°° functions in the ball, is given in terms of the derivatives of m > n functions F Fm e A~°° vanishing on {ak)k.

Phenomena with a constrained sample space appear frequently in practice. This is the case e.g. with strictly positive data, or with compositional data, like percentages or proportions. If the natural measure of difference is not the absolute one, simple algebraic properties show that it is more convenient to work with a geometry different from the usual Euclidean geometry in real space, and with a measure different from the usual Lebesgue measure, leading to alternative models which better fit the phenomenon under study. The general approach is presented and illustrated using the normal distribution, both on the positive real line and on the D-part simplex. The original ideas of McAlister in his introduction to the lognormal distribution in 1879, are recovered and updated

Identifiability of the so-called ω-slice algorithm is proven for ARMA linear systems. Although proofs were developed in the past for the simpler cases of MA and AR models, they were not extendible to general exponential linear systems. The results presented in this paper demonstrate a unique feature of the ω-slice method, which is unbiasedness and consistency when order is overdetermined, regardless of the IIR or FIR nature of the underlying system, and numerical robustness.
