Toward partial reorientation of land management for sustainability in view of material circulation: biophysical and historical analysis

This paper explores two major issues, from biophysical and historical viewpoints. We examine land management, which we define as the long-term fertility maintenance of land in relation to agriculture, fishery and forestry. We also explore humans’ positive role as agents aiming to reinforce harmonious materials circulation within the land. Liebig’s view on nature, agriculture and land, emphasizes the maintenance of long-term land fertility based on his agronomical thought that the circulation of matter in agricultural fields must be maintained with manure as much as possible. The thoughts of several classical economists, on nature, agriculture and land are reassessed from Liebig’s view point. Then, the land management problem is discussed at a much more fundamental level, to understand the necessary conditions for life in relation to land management. This point is analyzed in terms of two mechanisms: entropy disposal on the earth, and material circulation against gravitational field. Finally from the historical example of the metropolis of Edo, it is shown that there is yet another necessary condition for the sustainable management of land based on the creation of harmonious material cycles among cities, farm land, forests and surrounding sea areas in which humans play a vital role as agent.

Going beyond energy intensity to understand the energy metabolism of nations: the case of Argentina

The link between energy consumption and economic growth has been widely studied in the economic literature. Understanding this relationship is important from both an environmental and a socio-economic point of view, as energy consumption is crucial to economic activity and human environmental impact. This relevance is even higher for developing countries, since energy consumption per unit of output varies through the phases of development, increasing from an agricultural stage to an industrial one and then decreasing for certain service based economies. In the Argentinean case, the relevance of energy consumption to economic development seems to be particularly important. While energy intensity seems to exhibit a U-Shaped curve from 1990 to 2003 decreasing slightly after that year, total energy consumption increases along the period of analysis. Why does this happen? How can we relate this result with the sustainability debate? All these questions are very important due to Argentinean hydrocarbons dependence and due to the recent reduction in oil and natural gas reserves, which can lead to a lack of security of supply. In this paper we study Argentinean energy consumption pattern for the period 1990-2007, to discuss current and future energy and economic sustainability. To this purpose, we developed a conventional analysis, studying energy intensity, and a non conventional analysis, using the Multi-Scale Integrated Analysis of Societal and Ecosystem Metabolism (MuSIASEM) accounting methodology. Both methodologies show that the development process followed by Argentina has not been good enough to assure sustainability in the long term. Instead of improving energy use, energy intensity has increased. The current composition of its energy mix, and the recent economic crisis in Argentina, as well as its development path, are some of the possible explanations.

Sociedades cooperativas: mercantilidad y operaciones con terceros. Un comentario

En este trabajo se hace referencia a la posible consideración de las sociedades cooperativas como sociedades mercantiles, cumpliéndose determinadas circunstancias, y ello sin pérdida de sus características específicas en cuanto a la toma de decisiones, el reparto de beneficios y la búsqueda de la satisfacción de fines de interés general. Asimismo, se analizan las consecuencias de aumentar el porcentaje de operaciones realizadas con terceros no socios, respecto del total de operaciones realizadas por la sociedad cooperativa, y su incidencia en la cuantía de los fondos de la cooperativa y en la retribución del socio cooperativista. Se realiza en este punto una comparación con las sociedades capitalistas convencionales (S.A., S.L.). Finalmente, se propone una reforma legislativa al objeto de permitir aumentar el porcentaje de realización de operaciones cooperativizadas con terceros no socios, y ello sin pérdida de su tratamiento fiscal favorable. Technology, business models and network structure in the airline industry

Network airlines have been increasingly focusing their operations on hub airports through the exploitation of connecting traffic, allowing them to take advantage of economies of traffic density, which are unequivocal in the airline industry. Less attention has been devoted to airlines' decisions on point-to-point thin routes, which could be served using different aircraft technologies and different business models. This paper examines, both theoretically and empirically, the impact on airlines' networks of the two major innovations in the airline industry in the last two decades: the regional jet technology and the low-cost business model. We show that, under certain circumstances, direct services on point-to-point thin routes can be viable and thus airlines may be interested in deviating passengers out of the hub. CO2 emissions and economic activity: heterogeneity across countries and non stationary series

This paper explores the homogeneity of the functional form, the parameters, and the turning point, when appropriate, of the relationship between CO2 emissions and economic activity for 31 countries (28 OECD, Brazil, China, and India) during the period 1950 to 2006 using cointegration analysis. With a sample highly overlapped over time between countries, the result reveals that the homogeneity across countries is rejected, both in functional form and in the parameters of long term relationship. This confirms the relevance of considering the heterogeneity in exploring the relationship between air pollution and economic activity to avoid spurious parameter estimates and infer a wrong behavior of the functional form, which could lead to induce that the relationship is reversed when in fact it is direct.

Rigid flat webs on the projective plane

This paper studies global webs on the projective plane with vanishing curvature. The study is based on an interplay of local and global arguments. The main local ingredient is a criterium for the regularity of the curvature at the neighborhood of a generic point of the discriminant. The main global ingredient, the Legendre transform, is an avatar of classical projective duality in the realm of differential equations. We show that the Legendre transform of what we call reduced convex foliations are webs with zero curvature, and we exhibit a countable infinity family of convex foliations which give rise to a family of webs with zero curvature not admitting non-trivial deformations with zero curvature.

El present treball emmarca el concepte d'autisme des del punt de vista de diversos autors tant espanyols com de la resta del món. Així­ mateix intenta fer comprendre l'autisme des de diferents teories. Un altre punt bàsic del treball és la descricpció de diferents teràpies amb animals per abordar l'autisme, i en concret es realitza un estudi fonamental de la delfinoteràpia i els resultats a curt plaç en el delfinari Aqualand de Tenerife, arribant a conclusions per tal de poder ampliar més l'estudi en la Tesi Doctoral.

BAW notch filter for WiMAX applications

Als darrers anys la necessitat de connectar-se a internet des de qualsevol lloc s’ha incrementat exponencialment sobretot de manera inalàmbrica. Degut al finit espectre radioelèctric es tendeix a aprofitar totes les franges freqüencials d’aquest convivint diferents sistemes en franges properes podent induir-se interferències mútuament. Per evitar aquestes interferències es requereix de filtres a tots els dispositius els quals aïllin un sistema del adjacent. En aquest projecte es dóna una solució al cas concret de la convivència entre els sistemes Wi-Fi y WiMAX eliminant la banda Wi-Fi interferent en sistemes WiMAX. Aquesta solució consisteix en el disseny d’un filtre banda eliminada d’ordre 3 implementat mitjançant tecnologia BAW a partir de l’estructura y especificacions d’un filtre comercial. A més també es fa un petit estudi per veure si seria interessant una millora en els processos de fabricació del filtre per part del fabricant.

Approximation algorithms for two-state anti-ferromagnetic spin systems on bounded degree graphs

In a seminal paper [10], Weitz gave a deterministic fully polynomial approximation scheme for counting exponentially weighted independent sets (which is the same as approximating the partition function of the hard-core model from statistical physics) in graphs of degree at most d, up to the critical activity for the uniqueness of the Gibbs measure on the innite d-regular tree. ore recently Sly [8] (see also [1]) showed that this is optimal in the sense that if here is an FPRAS for the hard-core partition function on graphs of maximum egree d for activities larger than the critical activity on the innite d-regular ree then NP = RP. In this paper we extend Weitz's approach to derive a deterministic fully polynomial approximation scheme for the partition function of general two-state anti-ferromagnetic spin systems on graphs of maximum degree d, up to the corresponding critical point on the d-regular tree. The main ingredient of our result is a proof that for two-state anti-ferromagnetic spin systems on the d-regular tree, weak spatial mixing implies strong spatial mixing. his in turn uses a message-decay argument which extends a similar approach proposed recently for the hard-core model by Restrepo et al [7] to the case of general two-state anti-ferromagnetic spin systems.

L’objectiu principal d’aquesta recerca és conèixer com funciona, dins de l’àmbit del procés penal (recursos socials públics, advocats, policia i jutjats), el servei d’interpretació en casos de dones que han patit violència de gènere i no parlen català ni castellà, si realment es garanteix la comunicació i si les dones que pateixen una barrera idiomàtica tenen accés als recursos en les mateixes condicions que les dones espanyoles

La gralla contemporània

Aquest projecte porta al terreny escrit la necessitat d’ordenar i plasmar la tècnica de la interpretació de la gralla. Es mostren des dels conceptes més elementals fins a les últimes novetats interpretatives, sempre tenint en compte que continuen evolucionant. Aprofitant el vincle del concert amb la música contemporània i la seva exigència tècnica, es descriuen recursos com les articulacions, les dinàmiques, els harmònics i altres tècniques que actualment s’usen en la interpretació de la gralla. És un punt de trobada per a qualsevol que estigui interessat en aquest instrument tradicional, ja sigui aficionat o músic. També inclou una petita informació sobre les obres que s’interpreten al concert final.
