This case study identifies the elements that compose the Quality of Life (QofL) of individuals who were 75 years old or older and receive care at home. The study's sample was composed of individuals 75 years or older cared for by a home health care service in the primary health care unit in Vilafranca del Penedès, Spain (n=26). The variables included: a) socio-demographic data; b) concept of QofL; c) perception of QofL; d) reasons for their perception; d) satisfaction with life and related aspects; and f) feeling of happiness. Face to face interviews were conducted. A total of 76.9% of the individuals reported a good perception of QofL and the main reasons related to it were: health, family and social relationships, and the ability to adapt. Role Theory and Disengagement Theory explain the adaptation process of these individuals at this point in life.

This research work deals with the problem of modeling and design of low level speed controller for the mobile robot PRIM. The main objective is to develop an effective educational, and research tool. On one hand, the interests in using the open mobile platform PRIM consist in integrating several highly related subjects to the automatic control theory in an educational context, by embracing the subjects of communications, signal processing, sensor fusion and hardware design, amongst others. On the other hand, the idea is to implement useful navigation strategies such that the robot can be served as a mobile multimedia information point. It is in this context, when navigation strategies are oriented to goal achievement, that a local model predictive control is attained. Hence, such studies are presented as a very interesting control strategy in order to develop the future capabilities of the system. In this context the research developed includes the visual information as a meaningful source that allows detecting the obstacle position coordinates as well as planning the free obstacle trajectory that should be reached by the robot

PURPOSE: Pharmacovigilance methods have advanced greatly during the last decades, making post-market drug assessment an essential drug evaluation component. These methods mainly rely on the use of spontaneous reporting systems and health information databases to collect expertise from huge amounts of real-world reports. The EU-ADR Web Platform was built to further facilitate accessing, monitoring and exploring these data, enabling an in-depth analysis of adverse drug reactions risks.METHODS: The EU-ADR Web Platform exploits the wealth of data collected within a large-scale European initiative, the EU-ADR project. Millions of electronic health records, provided by national health agencies, are mined for specific drug events, which are correlated with literature, protein and pathway data, resulting in a rich drug-event dataset. Next, advanced distributed computing methods are tailored to coordinate the execution of data-mining and statistical analysis tasks. This permits obtaining a ranked drug-event list, removing spurious entries and highlighting relationships with high risk potential.RESULTS: The EU-ADR Web Platform is an open workspace for the integrated analysis of pharmacovigilance datasets. Using this software, researchers can access a variety of tools provided by distinct partners in a single centralized environment. Besides performing standalone drug-event assessments, they can also control the pipeline for an improved batch analysis of custom datasets. Drug-event pairs can be substantiated and statistically analysed within the platform's innovative working environment.CONCLUSIONS: A pioneering workspace that helps in explaining the biological path of adverse drug reactions was developed within the EU-ADR project consortium. El objetivo fundamental de este artículo es el de definir la estructura de la comunicación audiovisual actual, fruto de unas coordenadas contextuales de carácter político, tecnológico y también social. Nos centraremos en el análisis de la estructura del sistema multimedial global que interfiere directamente en los procesos de producción y consumo de los productos audiovisuales. Éstos, inscritos dentro de una lógica capitalista, distribuidos y pensados a escala global, contribuyen en el proceso de industrialización de la cultura y, en concreto, la comunicación. En consecuencia aparece el asentamiento de una nueva doctrina: la del imperialismo financiero que se encuentra detrás del pensamiento único.

Remote control systems are a very useful element to control and monitor devices quickly and easily. This paper proposes a new architecture for remote control of Android mobile devices, analyzing the different alternatives and seeking the optimal solution in each case. Although the area of remote control, in case of mobile devices, has been little explored, it may provide important advantages for testing software and hardware developments in several real devices. It can also allow an efficient management of various devices of different types, perform forensic security tasks, etc ... The main idea behind the proposed architecture was the design of a system to be used as a platform which provides the services needed to perform remote control of mobile devices. As a result of this research, a proof of concept was implemented. An Android application running a group of server programs on the device, connected to the network or USB interface, depending on availability. This servers can be controlled through a small client written in Java and runnable both on desktop and web systems.

En la primera part, de manera molt sintètica, s’indica que l’interès per l’activitat lúdica es desenvolupa sobretot a partir de la curiositat que desperta la infància en el segle XIX, la qual comença a considerar-se com un estat diferenciat de l’adult. Acostar-se al món infantil significà ocupar-se d’una de les activitats principals i primordials que desenvolupen els infants: el joc. D’aquesta manera fou com començarien a desplegar-se, des de perspectives diverses, variades teories explicatives en torn d’aquest fenomen. En l’abordatge d’aquest objecte d’estudi, però, els fruits han estat escassos i som lluny de trobar una teoria explicativa general. En aquest article, resseguint Huizinga, intentem acostar-nos a una definició en torn del joc a partir de considerar diversos dels elements constitutius de la seva essència. No obstant això, cal ser conscients que el joc no es deixa aprehendre amb facilitat, sobretot si aquesta aproximació a l’homo ludens no s’efectua des de la seva dimensió bio-psico-social. Per això el monogràfic té un caràcter multidisciplinari. La segona part d’aquest article té com a finalitat presentar cadascun dels tretze escrits, sabedors que, a pesar de significar interessants aportacions a l’estudi del joc, els articles no esgoten el discurs que es desplega quan estem interessats a fixar la nostra atenció en l’home que juga.

Debat a l'Internauta, el primer programa de ràdio del país sobre la xarxa, una col·laboració entre la UOC i Vilaweb. Fa menys d'una setmana que es va confirmar la notícia: la plataforma de comerç electrònic més potent de la xarxa, Amazon, va obrir dimecres de la setmana passada la filial ibèrica. Amazon és actualment el portal de venda en línia més important i divers, amb un catàleg de milions de llibres impresos i electrònics, a més d'un gavadal de productes com ara compactes, DVD, jocs, aparells d'electrònica de consum i, fins i tot, roba, alimentació i mobiliari. De moment, Amazon.es ha aterrat a casa nostra amb una oferta de productes físics, entre els quals hi ha cinquanta mil llibres impresos en català, però obre tantes oportunitats com interrogants. Com afectarà les llibreries convencionals? Tindran mercat ara plataformes de llibre digital més modestes? Estimularà el negoci del llibre electrònic? Facilitarà l'autoedició de llibres? Farà créixer el nombre de lectors en català? En parlem amb Enric Faura, de la plataforma Edi.cat, i amb l'expert Pep Torn, director de l'àrea de Biblioteca i Recursos Documentals de la UOC.

This paper describes preliminary results of a qualitative case study on mobile communication conducted in an elders¿ retirement home in Toronto (Ontario, Canada) in May 2012. This is part of an international research project on the relationship between mobile communications and older people.Secondary data at a Canadian level contextualizes the case study. We focus ondemographic characteristics and on adoption and use of information and communication technologies (ICTs) broken by age.Participants in the study (21 individuals) are between 75 and 98 years of age, thereforewe can consider that the gathered evidence refers to the ¿old¿ older. Mobile phoneusers in the sample describe very specific uses of the mobile phone, while non-usersreport not facing external pressures for adopting that technology. The main channel formediated communication is the landline; in consequences mobile phones ¿when used¿ constitute an extra layer of communication. Finally, when members of the personal network of the individuals live abroad they are more prone to use Internet and Skype. We are also able to find ex-users of both mobile telephony and computers/internet who stopped using these technologies because they did not find any use for them.

The design of an efficient collaborative multirobot framework that ensures the autonomy and the individualrequirements of the involved robots is a very challenging task. This requires designing an efficient platform for inter-robot communication. P2P is a good approach to achieve this goal. P2P aims at making the communication ubiquitous thereby crossing the communication boundary and has many attractive features to use it as a platform for collaborative multi-robot environments. In this work, we present the JXTA Overlay P2P system and its application for robot control. Since JXTAOverlay is able to overcome Firewalls, Routers and NATs, it is possible to control end-devices in a WAN without changing the network security policy. We used JXTA-Overlay for the control of robot motors. We evaluated the proposed system by many experiments and have shown that the proposed system has a good performance and can be used successfully for the control of robot.

Testbeds are a stage between the simulation and the production stages. To this end they must be as close as possible to production environments (i.e. real hardware, on the field deployments) while also keeping the traits of experimentation facilities (i.e. fault tolerance, ease of deployment, testing and data collection). This paper presents WiBed, a FOSS platform for WiFi testbeds based on OpenWRT Linux made to run oncommodity IEEE802.11 WiFi routers part of the Community-lab.net project, a global testbed for Community networks. WiBedhas been designed to support realistic low layer network exper-iments (according to the OSI model). This work recolects thedetails of the architecture, design and implementation of WiBed consolidated during its operation as a testbed. In addition to a set of routing experimentation results obtained during the Wireless Battlemesh v7 where WiBed was used as testbed platform.
