Effects of anomalous propagation conditions on weather radar observations

In this chapter our objective is to provide an overview of the effects of anomalous propagation conditions on weather radar observations, based mostly on studies performed by the authors during the last decade, summarizing results from recent publications, presentations, or unpublished material. We believe this chapter may be useful as an introductory text for graduate students, or researchers and practitioners dealing with this topic. Throughout the text a spherical symmetric atmosphere is assumed and the focus is on the occurrence of ground and sea clutter and subsequent problems for weather radar applications. Other related topics such as long-path, over-the-horizon propagation and detection of radar targets (either clutter or weather systems) at long ranges is not considered here; however readers should be aware of the potential problems these phenomena may have as range aliasing may cause these echoes appear nearer than they are ¿ for more details see the discussion about second trip echoes by Zrnic, this volume.

La ejecución hipotecaria en tiempos de crisis

L’objectiu del present treball es l’estudi del procediment d’execució hipotecaria. Arrel de la quantitat de desnonaments produït com a conseqüència de la crisi econòmica en que España es troba immersa, a la repercussió mediàtica d’aquests, a la pressió social i a alguns pronunciaments jurisprudencials a favor de la figura de la dació en pagament, s’ha fet necessària una modificació legislativa d’aquest procediment, regulat a la LEC. Aquest treball tractarà sobre la hipoteca en termes generals, el procediment d’execució hipotecaria que existia fa poc més d’un any i totes les modificacions que s’han dut a terme en l’actualitat amb el propòsit de millorar la situació dels deutors hipotecaris. Finalment, es tractarà sobre la figura de la dació en pagament, les seves característiques i alguns pronunciaments sobre aquesta figura.

Els orígens del llenguatge en l'evolució humana

Qualsevol reflexió sobre els orígens i el desenvolupament del llenguatge no està lliure d’especulació. Malgrat les dificultats d’investigar des d’una perspectiva psicològica l’evolució humana, creiem que és necessari que les ciències del comportament contribueixin amb la seva mirada a la comprensió dels esdeveniments que ens van convertir en humans. L’objectiu d’aquest article ha estat revisar i analitzar les publicacions més significatives en matèria de filogènesi del llenguatge i de la comunicació. Després d’una introducció bàsica a conceptes claus d’antropologia evolutiva, iniciem una primera part en la qual es destrien i s’examinen meticulosament els elements més significatius que fonamenten les hipòtesis sobre els orígens del llenguatge. En un segon apartat, un cop interrelacionades i interpretades conjuntament totes les dades, es planteja una explicació sobre els orígens del llenguatge tot destacant els aspectes que ens assemblen particularment interessants com és l’emergència dels signes i el paper que ha tingut el gest com a embrió del llenguatge oral.

From Master Plan to punctual interventions. Slums in Barcelona

The sloppy process of urbanization that took place in the outskirts of Barcelona from mid XIXth to mid XXth century resulted on large informal slums with evident urban deficiencies. The Metropolitan Masterplan of 1976 and its subsequent amendments could only partially improve the conditions of these areas of the city. Since 2005 some initiatives, in which local community or academic research played an important role, were undertaken following a tactical approach. The paper summarizes six proposed strategies that are a reaction to the traditional planning and zoning approach for the area. Some of them are currently been discussed or have already been included in the planning framework of the city.

Description of a robotics-oriented relational positioning methodology

This paper presents a relational positioning methodology for flexibly and intuitively specifying offline programmed robot tasks, as well as for assisting the execution of teleoperated tasks demanding precise movements.In relational positioning, the movements of an object can be restricted totally or partially by specifying its allowed positions in terms of a set of geometric constraints. These allowed positions are found by means of a 3D sequential geometric constraint solver called PMF – Positioning Mobile with respect to Fixed. PMF exploits the fact that in a set of geometric constraints, the rotational component can often be separated from the translational one and solved independently.

Error en el consentimiento: swaps y preferentes

La problemàtica jurídica-social que ha sorgit aquests darrers anys amb les permutes financeres i les participacions preferents ha fet plantejar si s'ha produït un error en el consentiment contractual amb aquest tipus de productes financers. A partir del contingut del Codi Civil espanyol i la doctrina, s'han analitzat els elements essencials del contracte, així com, la legislació aplicable als instruments financers. Amb l’ ajuda de la jurisprudència s'ha pogut comprovar que en la majoria de casos portats als tribunals en relació a aquests contractes, en els quals, es demana l'anul·labilitat contractual, el fonament principal es basa en la vulneració de les entitats de crèdit dels seus deures legals . En el present treball queda palesa la importància d'enllaçar l'element contractual del consentiment amb l'obligació que tenen les entitats de crèdit d'informar els seus clients. Així, la incorrecta formació sobre la realitat contractual que els clients manifesten amb el consentiment, passa sense cap dubte per la necessitat d'obtenir tota la informació rellevant del contracte. L’obligació d’informació està estretament lligada al deure de classificar als clients, totes dues són un compromís legal que tenen les entitats en la seva funció de lleialtat empresària. Les entitats financeres deuen per tant classificar els seus clients i proporcionals la informació, amb més rigor si cap , en el cas de clients minoristes. Per tot això, veiem que en aquells casos de clients minoristes en els quals no s'ha pogut demostrar per part de les entitats de crèdit que es va proporcionar tota la informació necessària, s'ha produït un error en el consentiment. Els clients no coneixien l’autèntic abast de la vinculació ni els costos als quals s'havia obligat , no hi ha dubte que en molts dels casos d'haver conegut la realitat, no haguessin contractat.

Coexistence of protease sensitive and resistant prion protein in 129VV homozygous sporadic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease: a case report

Introduction: The coexistence of different molecular types of classical protease-resistant prion protein in the same individual have been described, however, the simultaneous finding of these with the recently described protease-sensitive variant or variably protease-sensitive prionopathy has, to the best of our knowledge, not yet been reported. Case presentation: A 74-year-old Caucasian woman showed a sporadic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease clinical phenotype with reactive depression, followed by cognitive impairment, akinetic-rigid Parkinsonism with pseudobulbar syndrome and gait impairment with motor apraxia, visuospatial disorientation, and evident frontal dysfunction features such as grasping, palmomental reflex and brisk perioral reflexes. She died at age 77. Neuropathological findings showed: spongiform change in the patient"s cerebral cortex, striatum, thalamus and molecular layer of the cerebellum with proteinase K-sensitive synaptic-like, dot-like or target-like prion protein deposition in the cortex, thalamus and striatum; proteinase K-resistant prion protein in the same regions; and elongated plaque-like proteinase K-resistant prion protein in the molecular layer of the cerebellum. Molecular analysis of prion protein after proteinase K digestion revealed decreased signal intensity in immunoblot, a ladder-like protein pattern, and a 71% reduction of PrPSc signal relative to non-digested material. Her cerebellum showed a 2A prion protein type largely resistant to proteinase K. Genotype of polymorphism at codon 129 was valine homozygous. Conclusion: Molecular typing of prion protein along with clinical and neuropathological data revealed, to the best of our knowledge, the first case of the coexistence of different protease-sensitive prion proteins in the same patient in a rare case that did not fulfill the current clinical diagnostic criteria for either probable or possible sporadic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. This highlights the importance of molecular analyses of several brain regions in order to correctly diagnose rare and atypical prionopathies

Economic and social convergence in Colombia

GDP has usually been used as a proxy for human well-being. Nevertheless, other social aspects should also be considered, such as life expectancy, infant mortality, educational enrolment and crime issues. With this paper we investigate not only economic convergence but also social convergence between regions in a developing country, Colombia, in the period 1975-2005. We consider several techniques in our analysis: sigma convergence, stochastic kernel estimations, and also several empirical models to find out the beta convergence parameter (cross section and panel estimates, with and without spatial dependence). The main results confirm that we can talk about convergence in Colombia in key social variables, although not in the classic economic variable, GDP per capita. We have also found that spatial autocorrelation reinforces convergence processes through deepening market and social factors, while isolation condemns regions to nonconvergence.

Error en el consentimiento en los contratos de SWAP

Cada cert temps hi ha assumptes d’alt interès social dins de la jurisdicció. En els últims anys, coincidint amb la crisi financera internacional, els assumptes relatius a contractes bancaris complexos, sobretot permutes financeres o swaps, han tingut una gran rellevància. En un context de crisi financera internacional, i també nacional, s'han estès el nombre de demandes dirigides contra bancs i entitats financeres. Són reclamacions en les quals se sol·licita la declaració de nul·litat dels citats contractes, principalment es basa en un error del consentiment, nul·litat que comporta la devolució de les quantitats invertides, de les rentabilitats esperades o de les penalitzacions aplicades davant la resolució anticipada d'us contractes pels clients defraudats en les seves expectatives. Les presents pàgines pretenen un estudi dels litigis sobre SWAPS, principalment dels “Interest Rate Swap”, identificar quins són els contractes bancaris complexes, quines són les normes de consentiment contractual que els regeixen. Respecte dels primers, cal destacar que l'elevat nombre de casos plantejats davant els nostres tribunals no es tradueix en una casuística tan àmplia com seria imaginable. La gran majoria versa sobre les peticions de nul·litat del contracte (total o parcial) realitzades pels clients, al moment en què l'Euribor va descendir, i que allò que molts havien contractat com un segur de cobertura enfront dels elevats tipus d'interès que havien de pagar per les seves hipoteques, veien com conforme als pactes en el contracte, havien de satisfer al seu contrapart (una entitat de crèdit) una liquidació.

Case-Crossover Analysis of Air Pollution Health Effects: A Systematic Review of Methodology and Application

Case-crossover is one of the most used designs for analyzing the health-related effects of air pollution. Nevertheless, no one has reviewed its application and methodology in this context. Objective: We conducted a systematic review of case-crossover (CCO) designs used to study the relationship between air pollution and morbidity and mortality, from the standpoint of methodology and application.Data sources and extraction: A search was made of the MEDLINE and EMBASE databases.Reports were classified as methodologic or applied. From the latter, the following information was extracted: author, study location, year, type of population (general or patients), dependent variable(s), independent variable(s), type of CCO design, and whether effect modification was analyzed for variables at the individual level. Data synthesis: The review covered 105 reports that fulfilled the inclusion criteria. Of these, 24 addressed methodological aspects, and the remainder involved the design’s application. In the methodological reports, the designs that yielded the best results in simulation were symmetric bidirectional CCO and time-stratified CCO. Furthermore, we observed an increase across time in the use of certain CCO designs, mainly symmetric bidirectional and time-stratified CCO. The dependent variables most frequently analyzed were those relating to hospital morbidity; the pollutants most often studied were those linked to particulate matter. Among the CCO-application reports, 13.6% studied effect modification for variables at the individual level.Conclusions: The use of CCO designs has undergone considerable growth; the most widely used designs were those that yielded better results in simulation studies: symmetric bidirectional and time-stratified CCO. However, the advantages of CCO as a method of analysis of variables at the individual level are put to little use
