El medievalismo fértil de Paloma Díaz-Mas

The author of this article is concerned with trying to understand why Paloma Díaz-Mas, the writer of such an excellent novel as La tierra fértil (1999), has not received much critical attention. He underlines three main reasons. First, she does not live in Madrid or Barcelona and so she is far away from the main centres of cultural power. Second, she teaches Spanish literature in the Basque Country, a political and linguistic community which significantly differs from that of many other writers. Third, she writes historical novels, which does not appear to be very fashionable in Spain these days. Moreover, Díaz-Mas is a woman writer who does not make use of the most commonly available feminine patterns, and she does not seem to offer a model easy to include in a given feminist methodology either. However, Mérida-Jiménez argues that Paloma provides an intelligent deconstruction of “male authority” through subtle rhetorical means, as well as a representation of the weakness of his “domination” in very innovative ways, such as those derived from the dialectics between history and fiction, centrality and marginality, heterosexuality and homosexuality, individual and society, dream and reason or tradition and modernity.

The ‘Dys-Appearing’ Body in Doris Lessing’s The Diary of a Good Neighbour and Margaret Forster’s Have the Men Had Enough?

If the old body is usually read as a synonym of fragility and upcoming illness, even though not the case for most elderly citizens, the reality is that the longer we live, the increased probability of being affected by different illnesses cannot be eluded or denied. In Doris Lessing’s The Diary of a Good Neighbour and Margaret Forster’s Have the Men Had Enough? the reader is invited to participate in the day-to-day routines of two aged female protagonists, as well as to empathize with their inner feelings as they go through their last life stage. In fact, their ‘dys-appearing’ bodies, marked by their respective terminal illnesses, force these characters to grow closer to those around them and to accept the help of their families and friends, despite their desire to keep their free will and independence until the very end. The analysis of the two novels within the framework of ageing studies aims to show the contradictions existing between a growing ageing society and the negative cultural connotations of old age in Western society and the need to revise them.

Plegarias iluminadas: libros de horas conservados en bibliotecas catalanas

A través de este texto, pretendemos dar a conocer los libros de horas iluminados conservados en bibliotecas públicas catalanas. Con este fin, se han analizado un total de quince manuscritos, a nuestro juicio los más interesantes desde el punto de vista artístico, localizados en la Biblioteca de Catalunya, Biblioteca de la Universidad de Barcelona, Archivo Histórico de la Ciudad de Barcelona, Museo Episcopal de Vic, Biblioteca del monasterio de Santa María de Montserrat y Biblioteca del Palacio de Perelada. Los libros de horas se han agrupado de acuerdo con su procedencia geográfica: antiguos reinos peninsulares (Corona de Aragón y de Castilla), Francia, repúblicas italianas, Inglaterra y territorios septentrionales del ducado de Borgoña. Cada uno de estos apartados se organiza en torno a una secuencia cronológica que comienza a fines del siglo XIV y concluye hacia el segundo cuarto del siglo XVI.

El dogma de la Inmaculada Concepción originó la creación de la "Confraria del Senyor Rei", también denominada "Cofradía de la Copncepción de María Immaculada" en la Corona de Aragón. La confraternidad fue fundada en Zaragoza por Pedro IV el 8 de mayo de 1333. Con nuestro estudio queremos mostrar un manuscrito inédito, custodiado en la Biblioteca del Monasterio de Poblet. Se trata de un códice de lujo que contiene los estatutos de la confraternidad. El manuscrito fue iluminado mediante dos ilustraciones. La primera realizada durante el reinado de Martín el Humano, la segunda datada en torno a 1440. durante el reinado de Alfonso el Magnánimo.

In these novels, Angela Carter and Rose Tremain challenge not only notions of ageing by presenting elder protagonists who are lively and strong, but also the idea of history as unique, true and unquestionable by conferring on them the status of story and historytellers.

Quatre pintors de Tarragona a la ciutat de Tortosa. Algunes notícies d'arxiu

El principal objectiu d'aquest article és donar a coneixer el contracte d'un retaule signat el17 d'octubre de 1455 entre el bisbe i el capítol de la Seu de Tortosa, de l'una banda, i el pintor Valentí Montoliu, veí de Sant Mateu, de l'altra. El coneixement d'aquest contracte té molt d'interes perque Valentí Montoliu fou el pintor més important de la diocesi de Tortosa a la segona meitat del segle XV, i aquest retaule, per moltes raons i algunes d'aquestes documentades, va ser la més important de les seves obres i perque demostra que 1 'artista va treballar a la ciutat de Tortosa, possibilitat que, fins ara, havia estat negada per la crítica. A més, I'article aporta altres novetats documentals relatives a alguns pintors com Valentí Montoliu, procedents de Tarragona (essent aquest origin directe o indirecte), els quals van treballar a Tortosa durant la segona meitat del segle XV.

Oral implant rehabilitation in a patient with Moebius syndrome

Introduction: Moebius syndrome is a rare congenital disorder characterized by unilateral or bilateral involvement of the sixth and seventh cranial nerves, resulting in a lack of facial expression and eye movements. These patients suffer a series of oral manifestations that may complicate their dental treatment, such as facial and tongue muscle weakness, uncontrolled salivation secondary to defi cient lip sealing, micrognathia, microstomia, bifi d uvula, gothic and fi ssured palate, fi ssured tongue, and glossoptosis. The underlying etiology remains unclear, though vascular problems during embryogenesis appear to be involved. Clinical case: We report the case of a woman with Moebius syndrome and total edentulism. Eight years ago she underwent complete oral rehabilitation with the placement of two implants in each dental arch. Discussion: Moebius syndrome has still an unknown etiology, although it is related to disorders during pregnancy. This kind of patient can be rehabilitated using oral implants.

This article analyses the cómic book Maus, by Art Spiegelman (1986-1991), from two angles: as a work of art dealing with the Holocaust, and as a cómic that subverts the fictional tradition of the genre, opening itself up to history and the narration of reality. Maus, the first cómic book to treat the topic of the Holocaust in depth, was written by a second-generation witness. It is a story of both physical survival and enduring trauma in the family. El vigatanisme crític de Maria Àngels Anglada

Maria Àngels Anglada tenia una clara consciència del lloc, que va deixar una empremta profunda en la seva obra literària. L’article analitza les visions que l’autora dóna de Vic, la ciutat natal, a través de la poesia, la narrativa i la prosa assagística. En particular, l’anàlisi se centra en el relat de fons autobiogràfic No em dic Laura. Aquest text vehicula una dura crítica política, social i moral del Vic sotmès a la dictadura franquista. I, alhora, constitueix la millor mostra del vigatanisme crític que caracteritza l’autora.

Tècnica d'execució del frontal gòtic de Sant Llorenç de Morunys: a propòsit del dibuix preparatori

Els traços primigenis del dibuix preparatori del Frontal de Sant Llorenç de Morunys, al Museu Diocesà i Comarcal de Solsona, s"observen a ull nu, sense haver d"emprar tècniques sofisticades, a causa d"una pèrdua important de l"estrat pictòric que, de conservar-se, impediria la lectura de les capes més profundes. S"han examinat aquestes traces, font de documentació privilegiada que se"ns ofereix per incrementar el coneixement de l"obra i també, per comprendre el procés d"elaboració d"una pintura sobre taula en el context del bisbat d"Urgell al tombant del segle XIII. Durant l"estudi ha estat possible reconstruir, amb el suport inestimable dels tractats medievals, la seqüència d"execució del dibuix preliminar: primer, la distribució provisional de les línies mestres a mà alçada, amb carbonet, seguit de la seva fixació amb una punta metàl·lica dura; segon, el traçat de l"esbós figuratiu, amb un estil tou, i el posterior repàs definitiu amb una agulla o punta afilada sobre l"estrat preparatori, creant un dibuix incís que romandria visible després de recobrir tota la superfície amb una làmina d"estany. Finalment, s"aplicaria una complexa policromia, que combinaria tècniques opaques i vernissos translúcids. La revisió d"un corpus d"obres catalanes de característiques similars, moltes en les reserves dels museus pel seu precari estat de conservació, podria aportar dades rellevants quant a les diferents tècniques del dibuix preparatori emprades en la pintura sobre taula d"època medieval.

Pere Compte, mestre major de l'obra de la Seu de Tortosa.

[cat] En aquest article es documenta Pere Compte com a mestre major de la Seu de Tortosa(1490), fet que es relaciona amb la promoció del protonotari apostòlic Joan Girona i es compara amb la direcció de les obres de Pere Moragues, que tingué lloc un segle abans. D'altra banda, es proposa la hipòtesi que sigui Pere Compte el responsable del disseny de la capella del Roser de l'esmentat edifici. També s'apunta la possibilitat que fos Antoni Queralt el mestre encarregat de dirigir el dia a dia de l'obra mentre Compte n'era absent i es posa de manifest la importancia que va poder tenir aquest mestre, especialment a Tortosa i a Lleida, a l'entorn del 1500. Finalment, es dóna notícia de la presencia d'altres mestres importants a la Tortosa del canvi de segles paral·lelament a la de Compte i Queralt al front de les obres de la Seu.

Contribució a l'estudi de l'argenteria medieval de la ciutat de Tortosa. Els argenters al servei del municipi

Aquest article és el resum, sense apèndix documental, d"un treball més extens enllestit l"estiu de l"any 2003. En aquell moment vaig contemplar l"estudi de l"argenteria del centre tortosí des dels seus incerts inicis fins a l"any 1550, ja que, malgrat que sabem que alguns dels mestres actius o presents a la ciutat durant el primer quart del segle XVI treballaren en obres «a la romana»1, el 1550 va fabricar-se el bust de sant Eulali, que és la primera obra inequívocament renaixentista, d"entre les que es conserven i estan ben datades, que duu punxó de Tortosa, tot i que el seu autor fos un argenter de Tarragona. I és que, com demostra la Custòdia d"Orta, construïda l"any 1521, bona part de les obres locals produïdes durant el primer terç del segle XVI mostren característiques «gòtiques» amb l"afegit d"elements decoratius del nou estil.

Detecting Detection: International Perspectives on the Uses of a Plot

One of the problems with books which are relatively general in nature is that many of the individual contributions tend to be so narrow and specialised that only the author has any knowledge of (or interest in) the issues under discussion. At first sight this appears to be the case with Detecting Detection. Fortunately, however, first impressions are deceiving. Although the essays in the volume deal with writers as diverse and disparate as the Catalano-Spanish writer Juan Marse, the Bulgarian-French philosopher Julia Kristeva and the once-vaunted giant of English literature,Graham Greene, among numerous others, there is much to be enjoyed and learnt, even if some of the works under discussion are unfamiliar to the crime fiction reader and/or scholar to whom the book initially appears to be directed.
