The aim of this article is to read accurately the novel by M. A. Riera from the point of view of the Classical Tradition and, specifically, from the perspective of the evident Platonic tradition ¿the most metaphysical Platonic love- upon which it is based. In the author¿s opinion, only this accurate reading makes us understand why certain values coming from Paganism and which were considered as such cannot be restored by the Platonic Western world.

What can we learn about gravitational wave physics with an elastic spherial antenna?

A general formalism is set up to analyze the response of an arbitrary solid elastic body to an arbitrary metric gravitational wave (GW) perturbation, which fully displays the details of the interaction antenna wave. The formalism is applied to the spherical detector, whose sensitivity parameters are thereby scrutinized. A multimode transfer function is defined to study the amplitude sensitivity, and absorption cross sections are calculated for a general metric theory of GW physics. Their scaling properties are shown to be independent of the underlying theory, with interesting consequences for future detector design. The GW incidence direction deconvolution problem is also discussed, always within the context of a general metric theory of the gravitational field.

Can extreme black Holes have (long) Abelian Higgs hair?

It has been argued that a black hole horizon can support the long-range fields of a Nielsen-Olesen string and that one can think of such a vortex as black hole "hair." In this paper, we examine the properties of an Abelian Higgs vortex in the presence of a charged black hole as we allow the hole to approach extremality. Using both analytical and numerical techniques, we show that the magnetic field lines (as well as the scalar field) of the vortex are completely expelled from the black hole in the extreme limit. This was to be expected, since extreme black holes in Einstein-Maxwell theory are known to exhibit such a "Meissner effect" in general. This would seem to imply that a vortex does not want to be attached to an extreme black hole. We calculate the total energy of the vortex fields in the presence of an extreme black hole. When the hole is small relative to the size of the vortex, it is energetically favored for the hole to remain inside the vortex region, contrary to the intuition that the hole should be expelled. However, as we allow the extreme horizon radius to become very large compared to the radius of the vortex, we do find evidence of an instability. This proves that it is energetically unfavorable for a thin vortex to interact with a large extreme black hole. This would seem to dispel the notion that a black hole can support "long" Abelian Higgs hair in the extreme limit. We show that these considerations do not go through in the near-extreme limit. Finally, we discuss the implications for strings that end at black holes, as in the processes where a string snaps by nucleating black holes.

Can we identify Walrasian allocations?

[eng] We consider a discrete time, pure exchange infinite horizon economy with two or more consumers and at least one concumption good per period. Within the framework of decentralized mechanisms, we show that for a given consumption trade at any period of time, say at time one, the consumers will need, in general, an infinite dimensional (informational) space to identigy such a trade as an intemporal Walrasian one. However, we show and characterize a set of enviroments where the Walrasian trades at each period of time can be achieved as the equilibrium trades of a sequence of decentralized competitive mechanisms, using only both current prices and quantities to coordinate decisions.

Breus notes sobre els escarabeus i escaraboides de la necròpolis de Can Canyís

Al Congreso Nacional de Arqueología de Barcelona, Vilaseca, Solé i Mañé van donar la notícia del descobriment de la necrópolis de Can Canyís, l'agost de 1960, la qual havia estat completament destruida feia poc pels treballs agrícoles.! Per aquest motiu, els objectes trobats no estaven relacionats en concret amb els fragments d'urnes i no es va poder reconstruir l'aixovar complet de cap enterrament. La cronologia atribUIda al conjunt de la necrópolis pels seus excavadors va del 600 al 450. La memoria deIs treballs va ser publicada uns anys més tard pels mateixos autors incorporant l'excavació d'una tomba intacta de guerrer.

Contra les activitats d'animació de la lectura per a adults en la biblioteca pública: l'experiència de Can Sumarro

Les reflexions que volem fer aquí sobre les activitats d'animació de la lectura tenen el seu origen en l'experiència pròpia de la biblioteca pública de Can Sumarro, però també en les converses informals tingudes esporàdicament sobre aquest tema amb altres persones, professionals de la biblioteca pública igualment. Això no vol dir que les tesis exposades siguin compartides per aquestes persones, sinó simplement que es tracta d'un tema quotidià i d'un cert interès general. Com a mínim així ho esperem.

Fish Glucose Transporter (GLUT)-4 Differs from Rat GLUT4 in Its Traffic Characteristics but Can Translocate to the Cell Surface in Response to Insulin in Skeletal Muscle Cells

In mammals, glucose transporter (GLUT)-4 plays an important role in glucose homeostasis mediating insulin action to increase glucose uptake in insulin-responsive tissues. In the basal state, GLUT4 is located in intracellular compartments and upon insulin stimulation is recruited to the plasma membrane, allowing glucose entry into the cell. Compared with mammals, fish are less efficient restoring plasma glucose after dietary or exogenous glucose administration. Recently our group cloned a GLUT4-homolog in skeletal muscle from brown trout (btGLUT4) that differs in protein motifs believed to be important for endocytosis and sorting of mammalian GLUT4. To study the traffic of btGLUT4, we generated a stable L6 muscle cell line overexpressing myc-tagged btGLUT4 (btGLUT4myc). Insulin stimulated btGLUT4myc recruitment to the cell surface, although to a lesser extent than rat-GLUT4myc, and enhanced glucose uptake. Interestingly, btGLUT4myc showed a higher steady-state level at the cell surface under basal conditions than rat-GLUT4myc due to a higher rate of recycling of btGLUT4myc and not to a slower endocytic rate, compared with rat-GLUT4myc. Furthermore, unlike rat-GLUT4myc, btGLUT4myc had a diffuse distribution throughout the cytoplasm of L6 myoblasts. In primary brown trout skeletal muscle cells, insulin also promoted the translocation of endogenous btGLUT4 to the plasma membrane and enhanced glucose transport. Moreover, btGLUT4 exhibited a diffuse intracellular localization in unstimulated trout myocytes. Our data suggest that btGLUT4 is subjected to a different intracellular traffic from rat-GLUT4 and may explain the relative glucose intolerance observed in fish.

Aquestes dues zones residencials, Can Gili en el costat nord i Terra Alta en el marge sud, són d’una naturalesa molt diferent. Can Gili es una zona densament poblada, amb predomini d’habitatge plurifamiliar, amb botigues i equipaments però amb un dèficit important de zones verdes. En canvi, Terra Alta es un àrea residencial de baixa densitat, amb un percentatge elevat d’edificis unifamiliars, o plurifamiliars de pocs habitatges, sense comerç ni equipaments però amb una extensa zona verda, situada entre l’espai urbanitzat i la carretera. Fins ara, qui volia anar d’un a l’altre barri havia de donar una gran volta travessant la carretera per un pont paral.lel a la línia de ferrocarril del Nord, que va de Barcelona a Puigcerdà, que té una única vorera estreta en un dels seus dos costats. És per tot això que a l’any 2001 l’ajuntament de Granollers ens va encarregar el desenvolupament del disseny conceptual i la redacció del projecte constructiu d’una nova connexió per a vianants i bicicletes entre ambdós barris.

La construcció de la nau permetrà una zona d’alimentació i descans totalment coberta, una zona d’exercici parcialment coberta i una sala de preparació i magatzem dels productes necessaris. De la granja actual s’utilitzarà una quadre per infermeria i la resta per diferents necessitats com ara, magatzem palla, garatge tractor

Projecte d’una explotació bovina d’aptitud càrnia en règim extensiu a “ Can Gummà” de Cabanelles (Alt Empordà)

L’objectiu del projecte és determinar la viabilitat i el rendiment de la instauració d’una explotació bovina d’aptitud càrnia en règim extensiu, aconseguint uns bons nivells de producció i qualitat de la carn. Així mateix i com a complement a l’activitat prevista, es projecta la construcció d’un cobert agrícola de 300 m2 per a emmagatzemar palla i farratges. La finca “Mas Gummà” es troba situada dins terme municipal de Cabanelles, comarca de l’ Alt Empordà, província de Girona. Actualment es dedica a l’agricultura i a la producció ramadera. Pel que fa a la producció agrícola es dedica a la sembra de colza, blat i ordi amb l’objectiu de comercialitzar el gra. Referent a part ramadera es dedica a l’engreix de pocs i a la recria de gallines, en ambdós casos de forma integrada. La finca disposa de 111,23 hectàrees de bosc i de 88,34 hectàrees de terra, incloent la pròpia i l’arrendada

Pensions and procrastination : how can employers help their employees save for the future?

In this paper I show that employees tend to procrastinate when they are expected to decide whether or not they would like to save using the defined contribution pension scheme offered by their employer. By auto-enrolling the employees or asking them to decide before a given deadline, employers can mitigate some of the problems caused by employee procrastination. However both of these mechanisms present their own problems, caused by default stickiness and other issues, so I discuss how employers can decide which is the right mechanism to use depending on the characteristics of their employees, and how to minimize the problems these mechanisms can cause.

Can a Halo CME from the limb be geoeffective?

The probability for a halo coronal mass ejection (CME) to be geoeffective is assumed to be higher the closer the CME launch site is located to the solar central meridian. However, events far from the central meridian may produce severe geomagnetic storms, like the case in April 2000. In this work, we study the possible geoeffectiveness of full halo CMEs with the source region situated at solar limb. For this task, we select all limb full halo (LFH) CMEs that occurred during solar cycle 23, and we search for signatures of geoeffectiveness between 1 and 5 days after the first appearance of each CME in the LASCO C2 field of view. When signatures of geomagnetic activity are observed in the selected time window, interplanetary data are carefully analyzed in order to look for the cause of the geomagnetic disturbance. Finally, a possible association between geoeffective interplanetary signatures and every LFH CME in solar cycle 23 is checked in order to decide on the CME's geoeffectiveness. After a detailed analysis of solar, interplanetary, and geomagnetic data, we conclude that of the 25 investigated events, there are only four geoeffective LFH CMEs, all coming from the west limb. The geoeffectiveness of these events seems to be moderate, turning to intense in two of them as a result of cumulative effects from previous mass ejections. We conclude that ejections from solar locations close to the west limb should be considered in space weather, at least as sources of moderate disturbances.
