XML-based information management environment for PE technologies

Printed electronics is an emerging concept in electronics manufacturing and it is in very early development stage. The technology is not stable, design kits are not developed, and flows and Computer Aided Design (CAD) tools are not fixed yet. The European project TDK4PE addresses all this issues and this PFC has been realized on this context. The goal is to develop an XML-based information system for the collection and management of information from the technology and cell libraries developed in TDK4PE. This system will ease the treatment of that information for a later generation of specific Design Kits (DK) and the corresponding documentation. This work proposes a web application to generate technology files and design kits in a formatted way; it also proposes a structure for them and a database implementation for storing the needed information. The application will allow its users to redefine the structure of those files, as well as export and import XML files, between other formats.

Semantic Web applications: a framework for industry and business exploitation – What is needed for the adoption of the Semantic Web from the market and industry

In recent years, Semantic Web (SW) research has resulted in significant outcomes. Various industries have adopted SW technologies, while the ‘deep web’ is still pursuing the critical transformation point, in which the majority of data found on the deep web will be exploited through SW value layers. In this article we analyse the SW applications from a ‘market’ perspective. We are setting the key requirements for real-world information systems that are SW-enabled and we discuss the major difficulties for the SW uptake that has been delayed. This article contributes to the literature of SW and knowledge management providing a context for discourse towards best practices on SW-based information systems.

Web and education, a successful open entanglement

E-learning, understood as the intensive use of Information and Communication Technologies in mainly but not only) distance education, has radically changed the meaning of the latter. E-learning is an overused term which has been applied to any use of technology in education. Today, the most widely accepted meaning ofe-learning coincides with the fourth generation described by Taylor (1999), where there is an asynchronousprocess that allows students and teachers to interact in an educational process expressly designed in accordance with these principles. We prefer to speak of Internet-Based Learning or, better still, Web-Based Learning, for example, to explain the fact that distance education is carried out using the Internet, with the appearance of the virtual learning environment concept, a web space where the teaching and learning process is generated and supported (Sangrà, 2002). This entails overcoming the barriers of space and time of brickand mortar education (although we prefer the term face-to-face) or of classical distance education using broadcasting and adopting a completely asynchronous model that allows access to education by many more users, at any level (including secondary education, but primarily higher education and lifelong learning).

L’objecte central del present informe és descriure l’estat de la qüestió –tant a Catalunya com a altres països– de l’accés als recursos web des de les biblioteques. De fet, l’objectiu últim és presentar i analitzar la situació a l’estranger per tal d’adaptar les estratègies i els models de tractament i organització de recursos web a la realitat i les necessitats de les biblioteques catalanes.

Optimal monitoring to implement clean technologies when pollution is random

We analyze a model where firms chose a production technology which, together with some random event, determines the final emission level. We consider the coexistence of two alternative technologies: a "clean" technology, and a "dirty" technology. The environmental regulation is based on taxes over reported emissions, and on penalties over unreported emissions. We show that the optimal inspection policy is a cut-off strategy, for several scenarios concerning the observability of the adoption of the clean technology and the cost of adopting it. We also show that the optimal inspection policy induces the firm to adopt the clean technology if the adoption cost is not too high, but the cost levels for which the firm adopts it depend on the scenario.

Portal web per a l'IES Pla d'en Boet de Mataró

Aquesta memòria tracta sobre el procediment de creació software que s’ha dut a terme per a implementar el portal web de l’IES Pla d’En Boet de Mataró, un institut públic subvencionat per la Generalitat de Catalunya. Aquest portal s’ha desenvolupat des de zero i s’ha hagut d’enllaçar amb altres aplicacions que han sigut requerides. El document conté l’anàlisi, disseny i l’implementació del portal web, i de tota la funcionalitat que l’envolta, que s’ha realitzat per satisfer els requeriments inicials. Conté, a més, les diferents anàlisis que s’han necessitat per tal d’integrar-lo amb una aplicació pròpia del centre i amb un sistema d’intercanvi de missatges, i com s’ha decidit fer-ho. S’intenta explicar alguna de les problemàtiques més importants que han aparegut al llarg del procés i que han afectat al seu desenvolupament. Les decisions preses per a resoldre-les també apareixen per avalar l’estudi realitzat. Finalment hi ha una valoració personal i una altra dels objectius aconseguits per veure que s’ha arribat a la solució final amb èxit.

Documentation and sport information: the challenges and opportunities brought by new technologies

This text corresponds to the contents of the seminar “Information Services at the Sport Institutions” held by the author as part of the programme of activities of the Invited Professor of Olympism of the International Chair in Olympism (IOC-UAB) in 2001. The seminar discusses the potential of technologies such as the Internet in sports documentation.

New technologies in marketing: the special case of Buzz Marketing

Cada dia és més difícil convèncer al consumidor de que compri els productes d’una determinada empresa o contracti els seus serveis simplement amb la publicitat convencional. Això ha provocat l’aparició de noves tècniques per publicitar i arribar de manera mes eficient al públic objectiu. Buzz Marketing és un nou terme provinent de l’anglès i la seva traducció vindria a ser “marketing mitjançant el rumor o de tafaneria”. Hi ha noms similars com el Boca-Orella o la predicació.

Disseny i implementació d'un web modular amb gestió de continguts

Aquest projecte té com a objectiu el desenvolupament d'un site web amb la possibilitat que la gestió del seu contingut fos administrat per persones alienes a la implementació de la web. Aquesta fita ha estat duta a terme en una web d'una entitat esportiva, la Unió Esportiva Sant Cugat, des d'on durant 2 anys i mig s'ha gestionat la informació i comunicació a través de la xarxa amb aquest mitjà. L'estructuració del projecte ha estat totalment modular, per d'aquesta manera facilitar el dinamisme de canvis de possibles continguts que es poden incorporar a la web de manera molt ràpida i senzilla.

Aplicació web per a la gestió de nòmines a Andorra

Durant aquesta memòria s'explica d'una forma resumida el treball realitzat per dur a terme una aplicació web comercial per a la realització del càlcul de nòmines al Principat d’Andorra. A l'inici de la memòria es pot llegir una breu introducció sobre el projecte i de mica en mica s'endinsa en l'estudi, anàlisi i disseny del projecte per arribar als objectius establerts. Considero que tant l'anàlisi com el disseny són les parts més importants del projecte perquè un bon treball en aquestes fases pot evitar molts errors a les fases posteriors. Per últim s’explica la situació actual del projecte i es pot llegir una breu conclusió i opinió personal sobre el projecte realitzat.

Sistema de control remot d'una màquina de rajos X via web

El projecte desenvolupat té com a objectiu la millora en la gestió de la configuració de les màquines de rajos X de l'empresa Varpe. La principal funció d’aquestes màquines és la inspecció d'envasos de productes alimentaris, amb l'objectiu de detectar anomalies produïdes durant l'envasat. En l'actualitat la resolució d'incidències d'aquestes màquines requereix el desplaçament físic d'operaris a les localitzacions on estan situades les màquines. El projecte proporciona una nova forma de treball a partir de l'ús de bases de dades distribuïdes en les màquines de rajos X i que són gestionades per un servidor central. Entre d'altres, la principal avantatge d'aquesta gestió és que la reconfiguració i resolució d'indecències es pot realitzar fàcilment a través d'una aplicació web.
