La guerra de Laos es probablemente uno de los episodios de la Guerra Fría más desconocidos e ignorados por la historiografía a pesar de las terribles consecuencias que tuvo. El hecho de que frecuentemente se considere como un conflicto periférico y ligado a la Guerra de Vietnam no contribuye tampoco a mejorar esta imagen.

Why not all young firms invest in R&D

This article aims to analyze the different impact that some factors may exert on the probability that a small young firm invests intensively in R&D. Recently, an increasing amount of the literature makes reference to the vital role played by a small number of young firms in generating jobs and increasing efficiency levels. However, not all new firms invest in R&D. Departing from the definition of YICs (firms younger than 6 years old, fewer than 250 employees and with more than 15% of their revenues invested in R&D activities), and with an extensive sample of the Spanish Community Innovation Survey between 2004- 2010, we try to determine: i) those factors that cause firms to become YICs (innovative young small firms) or YNICs (moderately innovative young small firms); ii) what is the difference in the impact of those factors between YICs and YNICs. Our results show that factors such as initial innovation capacity and cooperation in R&D projects enhance the probability of becoming a YIC. Nevertheless, factors such as export potential and market uncertainty may influence the decision to invest moderately and become a YNIC. Keywords: Innovation, Policy, YICs. Jóvenes y prácticas comunicativas: más allá de los datos estadísticos

La forma en que adolescentes y jóvenes utilizan las tecnologías de la información y la comunicación es diferente a la de la población adulta. Las prácticas son más intensivas y extensivas entre l@s más jóvenes, tal y como muestran las estadísticas disponibles. Este resultado, ampliamente conocido, nos lleva a preguntarnos ¿qué implicaciones tienen estas prácticas comunicativas de las generaciones más jóvenes?Tomando como punto de partida algunos estudios que analizan la situación, tanto en España como en otros países, revisaremos los cambios que ya se están produciendo en ámbitos que van desde el aprendizaje a la socialización. Revisaremos, asimismo, algunas propuestas que intentan dar una explicación teórica global de las prácticas y las actitudes comunicativas de jóvenes y adolescentes. En el análisis tendremos en cuenta el creciente proceso de individualización de nuestras sociedades y la presencia habitual de comunidades de práctica permanentemente conectadas que caracterizan a estas generaciones.

Assessment of dissolution techniques for the analysis of ceramic samples by plasma spectrometry

In this study, 13 ceramic samples were subjected to dissolution using three different procedures: (a) acid attack in open PTFE vessels with a mixture of HF-HClO4, (b) fusion of the sample with lithium metaborate and (c) microwave digestion in PTFE bombs. The samples used in the study had been previously analyzed by neutron activation analysis (NAA), X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) and they cover a wide range of ceramics fired in different atmospheres and temperatures as well as different mineralogical and chemical compositions. The effectiveness of each procedure is evaluated in terms of its ability to dissolve the various mineralogical phases of the samples, of the number of elements that can be determined and of the time needed for the whole scheme of analysis to be completed.

All-sky search algorithms for monochromatic signals in bar gravitational wave detector data

In this paper we design and develop several filtering strategies for the analysis of data generated by a resonant bar gravitational wave (GW) antenna, with the goal of assessing the presence (or absence) therein of long-duration monochromatic GW signals, as well as the eventual amplitude and frequency of the signals, within the sensitivity band of the detector. Such signals are most likely generated in the fast rotation of slightly asymmetric spinning stars. We develop practical procedures, together with a study of their statistical properties, which will provide us with useful information on the performance of each technique. The selection of candidate events will then be established according to threshold-crossing probabilities, based on the Neyman-Pearson criterion. In particular, it will be shown that our approach, based on phase estimation, presents a better signal-to-noise ratio than does pure spectral analysis, the most common approach.

Los nuevos sentidos de la tarea de enseñar. Más allá de la dicotomía 'enseñar vs asistir'

La escuela ha estado siendo objeto de un conjunto de demandas para que se hiciera cargo de «todas» las problemáticas de «la» infancia. Este comienzo de siglo nos muestra, con inusitada crudeza, que la única institución pública hasta hoy entronizada por la política social para la educación de las jóvenes generaciones, la escuela, no es suficiente para dar cauce a las múltiples demandas emergentes. Se trata, por tanto, de que la escuela re-centre su función, poniendo coto a un exceso de acumulación de funciones, que, en realidad, pretende ocultar los nuevos designios de la globalización para la escuela pública: su desaparición como instancia democrática y democratizadora en la tramitación de las herencias culturales. El mundo ha cambiado. También el de los niños. La noción misma de sistema que se emplea: un único orden posible para encauzar a «la» infancia, se transforma en el principal obstáculo epistemológico para pensar nuevas maneras de sostener la responsabilidad pública ante las nuevas generaciones. Se trata de realizar un esfuerzo de invención para un siglo nuevo. Podríamos pensar, por ejemplo, en cómo dar soporte a los niños y a los adolescentes para que puedan mantener con éxito su escolaridad, y acceder a lo social en sentido amplio y plural. Tal vez pase por otorgarles estatuto de sujetos de derecho, con quienes es posible convenir propuestas, propulsar proyectos, discutir alternativas. La educación social puede aquí iniciar su andadura. Podríamos pensar también en cómo dar soporte a la escuela para que re-centre su función en la transmisión de los valiosos legados culturales y trabaje en red con otras instituciones, para que niños y adolescentes puedan realizar sus experiencias de movilidad y confrontación. En suma, se trata de apostar porque la educación recupere, ante los procesos de banalización y vaciamiento culturales, la transmisión como polea social y cultural que articule a los jóvenes con el mundo.

Challenges for the New Century Schools for All and Narrowing Gaps through Transformation Pedagogies

La pedagogia ha tractat la qüestió de gènere i d’educació? I si és el cas, de quina manera? Quins han estat els resultats? Tant el valor de l’educació com el de gènere foren qüestionats i revisats al començament del segle XX. Els resultats d’aquelles reflexions i les batalles lluitades per millorar les condicions, comencen a sentir-se cent anys més tard. Aquest article inclourà primerament una visió general de la situació de la dona en l’educació en l’àmbit mundial. En segon lloc, se centrarà en els enfocaments pedagògics transformacionals que de manera gradual comencen a introduir-se en els sistemes educatius convencionals —també en algunes universitats i programes de traducció—, secundats d’una banda pels principis de democràcia, diàleg, carnaval, experimentació i (socio) constructivisme, i per la neurociència i la psicologia de l’altra. És evident que aquests enfocaments desafien la discriminació i afavoreixen la creació de ponts, no tan sols entre gèneres, sinó també entre etnicitats i classes social

Educació ambiental i el valor de sentir allò que és comú

Raimon Pannikar deia, ja fa uns anys, que «no és possible un jo i un tu sense una tercera persona, i aquesta tercera persona existent en tot diàleg és sempre la matèria, l'espai, el temps, el cosmos, la terra». I Jo penso que és molt intel·ligent parlar d'una «tercera persona», d'un tercer element que en realitat és i no és una persona. En tot el que seguira intentaré explicar aixà que die, perquè em sembla quelcom interessant per a l'educació ambiental.

Investigating ferromagnetism and charge order in Bi1-xSrxMnO3(x<0.3)ceramic oxides.

The possible coexistence of ferromagnetism and charge/orbital order in Bi3/4Sr1/4MnO3 has been investigated. The manganite Bi0.75Sr0.25MnO3, with commensurate charge balance, undergoes an electronic transition at TCO~600 K that produces a longrange modulation with double periodicity along a and c axis, and unusual anisotropic evolution of the lattice parameters. The previously proposed ferromagnetic properties of this new ordered phase were studied by magnetometry and diffraction techniques. In zero field the magnetic structure is globally antiferromagnetic, ruling out the apparition of spontaneous ferromagnetism. However, the application of magnetic fields produces a continuous progressive canting of the moments, inducing a ferromagnetic phase even for relatively small fields (H<<1 T). Application of pulsed high fields produces a remarkable and reversible spin polarization (under 30 T, the ferromagnetic moment is ~3 ¿B/Mn, without any sign of charge order melting). The coexistence of ferromagnetism and charge order at low and very-high fields is a remarkable property of this system.

Plant uses in different bronze and iron age settlements from the Nuoro province (Sardinia). The results of phytolith analyses from several ceramic fragments and grinding stones.

Ceramic vessels and milling stones are important components of the archaeological record in several Nuraghi from the Pranemuru Plateau (Sardinia). To obtain information on the possible uses of the milling stones and the content vessels is of great interest to understand the economical activities carried out in these sites by these populations. One of the approaches to obtain information on the plant uses was the phytolith analyses of the sediment adhered both to the surface of the milling stones and to the surface of the vessel content. In total we analyzed eleven archaeological samples and two control samples collected from five different Nuraghi in the Pranemuru Plateau (Nuoro Province, Sardinia). The Nuraghi were located in an area of 10 km radius from nuraghe Arrubiu and were chronologically ascribed to the Bronze Age and one site -Pranu Illixi- to the Iron Age.

All-Optical Unicast/Multicast Routing in WDM Networks

Optical transport networks (OTN) must be prepared in terms of better resource utilization, for accommodating unicast and multicast traffic together. Light-trees have been proposed for supporting multicast connections in OTN. Nevertheless when traffic grooming is applied in light-trees, resources can be underutilized as traffic can be routed to undesirable destinations in order to avoid optical-electrical-optical (OEO) conversions. In this paper, a novel architecture named S/G light- tree for supporting unicast/multicast connections is proposed. The architecture allows traffic dropping and aggregation in different wavelengths without performing OEO conversions. A heuristic that routes traffic demands using less wavelengths by taking advantage of the proposed architecture is designed as well. Simulation results show that the architecture can minimize the number of used wavelengths and OEO conversions when compared to light-trees
