Smart antennas: state of the art

Aim of this contribution is to illustrate the state of the art of smart antenna research from several perspectives. The bow is drawn from transmitter issues via channel measurements and modeling, receiver signal processing, network aspects, technological challenges towards first smart antenna applications and current status of standardization. Moreover, some future prospects of different disciplines in smart antenna research are given.

On wideband deconvolution using wavelet transform

A discussion on the expression proposed in [1]–[3]for deconvolving the wideband density function is presented. Weprove here that such an expression reduces to be proportionalto the wideband correlation receiver output, or continuous wavelettransform of the received signal with respect to the transmittedone. Moreover, we show that the same result has been implicitlyassumed in [1], when the deconvolution equation is derived. Westress the fact that the analyzed approach is just the orthogonalprojection of the density function onto the image of the wavelettransform with respect to the transmitted signal. Consequently,the approach can be considered a good representation of thedensity function only under the prior knowledge that the densityfunction belongs to such a subspace. The choice of the transmittedsignal is thus crucial to this approach.

Hybrid turbo FEC/ARQ systems and distributed space-time coding for cooperative transmission

Cooperative transmission can be seen as a "virtual" MIMO system, where themultiple transmit antennas are in fact implemented distributed by the antennas both at the source and the relay terminal. Depending on the system design, diversity/multiplexing gainsare achievable. This design involves the definition of the type of retransmission (incrementalredundancy, repetition coding), the design of the distributed space-time codes, the errorcorrecting scheme, the operation of the relay (decode&forward or amplify&forward) and thenumber of antennas at each terminal. Proposed schemes are evaluated in different conditionsin combination with forward error correcting codes (FEC), both for linear and near-optimum(sphere decoder) receivers, for its possible implementation in downlink high speed packetservices of cellular networks. Results show the benefits of coded cooperation over directtransmission in terms of increased throughput. It is shown that multiplexing gains areobserved even if the mobile station features a single antenna, provided that cell wide reuse of the relay radio resource is possible.

Migracions i microestats

Els països més petits d’Europa han transformat les seves bases econòmiques emparats en les possibilitats que els oferia el seu fet diferencial. La consecució d’una economia bàsicament terciària s’ha acompanyat d’un canvi en les funcions territorials i, especialment, d’un augment important de la població, de manera que han passat de ser societats emissores a ser societats receptores pel que fa als moviments migratoris. La composició de la població segons el seu origen mostra que aquestes societats tenen uns percentatges d’immigrants superiors al 60% en dos dels casos, i molt superior al 10% en la resta. Avui, els microestats europeus són l’expressió moderna de la ciutat estat d’altres èpoques, però, a més, s’han convertit en veritables societats multiculturals a les portes del segle XXI.

Experiència dels cuidadors i les cuidadores principals informals que tenen cura d'un familiar vell amb demència des de fa més de quatre anys

El treball que es presenta vol respondre la pregunta de quina és l’experiència dels cuidadors i les cuidadores principals informals que tenen cura d’un familiar vell amb demència des de fa més de 4 anys. Després de plantejar les hipòtesis de partida, es defineixen els objectius generals i específics i s’expliquen l’interès, la justificació, la rellevància i l’aportació d’aquest estudi. En l’apartat corresponent a l’estat de la qüestió i la fonamentació conceptual, després de fer una revisió bibliogràfica, es descriuen els elements que formen part d’aquesta temàtica: perfils dels receptors de cures i de les cuidadores, significat de tenir cura, vida quotidiana i qualitat de vida i descripció del model conceptual de Virginia Henderson. En el capítol següent s’exposen la metodologia, el paradigma i el mètode d’investigació utilitzats en aquest treball, així com les matrius d’anàlisi del contingut i del discurs. A partir d’aquí s’exposen els resultats en funció dels objectius plantejats. En la discussió, s’analitzen i s’interpreten les dades obtingudes i es contraposen amb altres estudis, a més de fer-se una reflexió personal sobre els aprenentatges adquirits i una proposta de línies de treball futures. A continuació s’exposen unes conclusions per resumir la informació obtinguda. En la secció de referències bibliogràfiques es detallen les fonts consultades, i en els annexos hi consten els models d’entrevista i de matriu per a l’anàlisi de dades, el full de consentiment informat, així com el buidatge i l’anàlisi de les entrevistes.
