Finding a suitable job: the effect of the institutional context on self-perceived over-education

The current research compares the perception of over-education in four different European countries, resorting to European Household Panel Data. The results confirm that the type of educational system accounts for some of the cross-national differences in self-perceived over-education. In qualificational spaces, like Denmark, where vocational training receives more importance, self-perceived over-education is not associated as much with educational attainment as in the so-called’ organisational spaces’, like Spain, France and Italy. Yet, the results confirm that, controlling for the system of education, the traits and regulation of the labour market also have an effect on over-education. Thus, in Spain, where temporary employment has soared in recent decades, this type of contract is clearly associated with the perception of over-education, to a much higher extent than in Italy or France. Temporary contracts in Spain may not work as a steppig stone for attaining a job suitable to the training received by the individual, as they may in the case of France or Italy. In sum, not only institutions offering skills and human capital, but labour market regulation as well, have a clear impact on the incidence of over-education.

A note on the Malliavin differentiability of the Heston volatility

We show that the Heston volatility or equivalently the Cox-Ingersoll-Ross process is Malliavin differentiable and give an explicit expression for the derivative. This result assures the applicability of Malliavin calculus in the framework of the Heston stochastic volatility model and the Cox-Ingersoll-Ross model for interest rates.

Les Biblioteques per a infants malalts als hospitals: a la recerca d'un espai propi

Les "Pautas para bibliotecas al servicio de pacientes de hospital, ancianos y discapacitados en centros de atención de larga duración" elaborades per l'IFLA són el marc normatiu de les biblioteques per a pacients. La seva existència, però, no garanteix el seu compliment; és per això que trobem realitats ben diverses, des dels hospitals que les reinterpreten i adeqüen a les seves necessitats i mitjans fins als que les ignoren o les desconeixen. En aquesta comunicació farem un recorregut per diverses alternatives o interpretacions als espais hospitalaris dedicats tant a l'oci com a la informació dels pacients en un context internacional. Es conclou que la biblioteca per a pacients és un servei en si mateix i es reivindica com un servei més al qual el malalt té dret.

El concepto de arte público es un término polisémico cuyos significados se reflejan en la diversidad de recursos que podemos hallar en internet. Por lo tanto, la aproximación a dichos recursos requerirá una acotación del propio concepto, que transita entre los ámbitos de la escultura, el monumento, las artes visuales y el espacio urbano entendido desde su vertiente cívica. La aproximación a los contenidos de internet vinculados con el arte público se aborda desde tres áreas temáticas cuyo análisis nos ayudará a organizar un volumen heterogéneo de información. La primera área incide en el papel de los centros de investigación y ayuntamientos en la promoción, inventariado y catalogación de las colecciones de arte en el espacio público. La segunda se centra en aquellos sitios web que son entendidos como fuentes de información y herramientas; los denominados think tanks. La tercera y última destaca la presencia en la red de páginas oficiales dedicadas a autores y obras específicas. The concept of public art is a polysemic term, and the dispersion of its meaning is reflected in the diversity of resources we can find on the web. Therefore, the approach to these resources needs a delimitation of the concept, crossing the fields of Sculpture, Monument, Visual arts and Urban space, defined from a civic perspective. The management of these resources is addressed from three strands, whose analysis will help us to organize a heterogeneous volume of information. The first affects the role of research centers and municipalities in the promotion, inventory and cataloging of collections of art in public spaces. The second focuses on those websites understood as sources of information and resources, the so-called think tanks. Políticas públicas y sustentabilidad en las zonas desfavorecidas y de montaña en España

El presente trabajo aborda una visión global de la acción pública en los espacios que, en principio, han sido oficial o/y institucionalmente definidos como zonas desfavorecidas o zonas de montaña en España. Territorios, básicamente rurales, que en España muestran un notable grado de heterogeneidad en cuanto a sus estructuras económicas, sociales y culturales, además de caracterizarse por unas estructuras ecológicas igualmente dispares. Esta realidad poliédrica en los últimos años se está viendo condicionada por cuatro factores: las transformaciones internas del sector agroalimentario; los cambios en la organización espacial de la actividad y de la población que son consecuencia de la reestructuración del capitalismo; por las nuevas funciones socioeconómicas, socioculturales y medioambientales que desempeñan estos espacios; y, por el impacto, a veces contradictorio, de las diversas políticas que se implementan sobre ellos, y que se desenvuelven, cada vez más nítidamente, bajo el paradigma del desarrollo sostenible institucional.

Concepciones y creencias de los profesores universitarios de matemáticas acerca de la enseñanza de las ecuaciones diferenciales

La investigación que aquí presentamos es una aproximación a las concepciones y creencias de los profesores universitarios de matemáticas acerca de la enseñanza de las ecuaciones diferenciales en estudios científico-experimentales. A parte de los intentos por caracterizar a cada profesor en términos de sus concepciones y creencias, y de establecer el nivel de coherencia y consistencia de éstas, a partir de los resultados del análisis se explica la persistencia de la utilización de métodos tradicionales de enseñanza. Las diferencias y similitudes entre las concepciones y creencias de cada profesor, y el nivel de coherencia demostrado nos han permitido establecer tres grupos de profesores, a los que hemos denominado I, II y III.

Plant-derived phenolics inhibit the accrual of structurally characterised protein and lipid oxidative modifications

Epidemiological data suggest that plant-derived phenolics beneficial effects include an inhibition of LDL oxidation. After applying a screening method based on 2,4-dinitrophenyl hydrazine- protein carbonyl reaction to 21 different plant-derived phenolic acids, we selected the most antioxidant ones. Their effect was assessed in 5 different oxidation systems, as well as in other model proteins. Mass-spectrometry was then used, evidencing a heterogeneous effect on the accumulation of the structurally characterized protein carbonyl glutamic and aminoadipic semialdehydes as well as for malondialdehyde-lysine in LDL apoprotein. After TOF based lipidomics, we identified the most abundant differential lipids in Cu++-incubated LDL as 1-palmitoyllysophosphatidylcholine and 1-stearoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine. Most of selected phenolic compounds prevented the accumulation of those phospholipids and the cellular impairment induced by oxidized LDL. Finally, to validate these effects in vivo, we evaluated the effect of the intake of a phenolic-enriched extract in plasma protein and lipid modifications in a well-established model of atherosclerosis (diet-induced hypercholesterolemia in hamsters). This showed that a dietary supplement with a phenolic-enriched extract diminished plasma protein oxidative and lipid damage. Urban Gardening: espacio de creación, crítica social y activismo ecológico

El artículo hace una revisión de aquellas intervenciones artísticas que abordan determinados usos del territorio urbano y formas de cultivo. Actuaciones que mediante la acción de plantar y cultivar generan espacios para la expresión de identidades artísticas, políticas y sociales. Estos lugares encuentran asentamiento en los intersticios de nuestras ciudades, en espacios vacíos como solares abandonados, en zonas no urbanizables o semi urbanizadas, en riberas de ríos, arcenes de autopistas, márgenes de vías de tren, etc. The paper reviews those specific artistic interventions that address urban land uses and farming methods. Actions that through the act of planting and cultivating generate spaces for the expression of artistic, political and social identities. These places are settling in the interstices of our cities, in empty spaces such as brownfield sites, in non-urbanized or semi urbanized areas, on riverbanks, highways verges, railways edges, etc.
