Avalanche photodiodes operated in the Geiger mode offer a high intrinsic gain as well as an excellent timing accuracy. These qualities make the sensor specially suitable for those applications where detectors with high sensitivity and low timing uncertainty are required. Moreover, they are compatible with standard CMOS technologies, allowing sensor and front-end electronics integration within the pixel cell. However, the sensor suffers from high levels of intrinsic noise, which may lead to erroneous results and limit the range of detectable signals. They also increase the amount of data that has to be stored. In this work, we present a pixel based on a Geiger-mode avalanche photodiode operated in the gated mode to reduce the probability to detect noise counts interfering with photon arrival events. The readout circuit is based on a two grounds scheme to enable low reverse bias overvoltages and consequently lessen the dark count rate. Experimental characterization of the fabricated pixel with the HV-AMS 0.35µm standard technology is also presented in this article.

Ammonia gas detection by pure and catalytically modified WO3 based gas sensor was analysed. The sensor response of pure WO3 to NH3 was not only rather low but also presented an abnormal behaviour, probably due to the unselective oxidation of ammonia to NOx. Copper and vanadium were introduced in different concentrations and the resulting material was annealed at different temperatures in order to improve the sensing properties for NH3 detection. The introduction of copper and vanadium as catalytic additives improved the response to NH3 and also eliminated the abnormal behaviour. Possible mechanisms of NH3 reaction over these materials are discussed. Sensor responses to other gases like NO2 or CO and the interference of humidity on ammonia detection were also analysed so as to choose the best sensing element.

Leakage detection is an important issue in many chemical sensing applications. Leakage detection hy thresholds suffers from important drawbacks when sensors have serious drifts or they are affected by cross-sensitivities. Here we present an adaptive method based in a Dynamic Principal Component Analysis that models the relationships between the sensors in the may. In normal conditions a certain variance distribution characterizes sensor signals. However, in the presence of a new source of variance the PCA decomposition changes drastically. In order to prevent the influence of sensor drifts the model is adaptive and it is calculated in a recursive manner with minimum computational effort. The behavior of this technique is studied with synthetic signals and with real signals arising by oil vapor leakages in an air compressor. Results clearly demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed method.

Laser systems can be used to detect very weak optical signals. The physical mechanism is the dynamical process of the relaxation of a laser from an unstable state to a steady stable state. We present an analysis of this process based on the study of the nonlinear relaxation time. Our analytical results are compared with numerical integration of the stochastic differential equations that model this process.

In multiobject pattern recognition the height of the correlation peaks should be controlled when the power spectrum of ajoint transform correlator is binarized. In this paper a method to predetermine the value of detection peaks is demonstrated. The technique is based on a frequency-variant threshold in order to remove the intraclass terms and on a suitable factor to normalize the binary joint power spectrum. Digital simulations and experimental hybrid implementation of this method were carried out.

We present a method to detect patterns in defocused scenes by means of a joint transform correlator. We describe analytically the correlation plane, and we also introduce an original procedure to recognize the target by postprocessing the correlation plane. The performance of the methodology when the defocused images are corrupted by additive noise is also considered.

We study the response and cross sections for the absorption of GW energy generated in a Jordan-Brans-Dicke theory by a resonant mass detector shaped as a hollow sphere. As a source of the GW we take a binary system in the Newtonian approximation. For masses of the stars of the order of the solar mass, the emitted GW sweeps a range of frequencies which include the first resonant mode of the detector.

Coalescing compact binary systems are important sources of gravitational waves. Here we investigate the detectability of this gravitational radiation by the recently proposed laser interferometers. The spectral density of noise for various practicable configurations of the detector is also reviewed. This includes laser interferometers with delay lines and Fabry-Prot cavities in the arms, both in standard and dual recycling arrangements. The sensitivity of the detector in all those configurations is presented graphically and the signal-to-noise ratio is calculated numerically. For all configurations we find values of the detector's parameters which maximize the detectability of coalescing binaries, the discussion comprising Newtonian- as well as post-Newtonian-order effects. Contour plots of the signal-to-noise ratio are also presented in certain parameter domains which illustrate the interferometer's response to coalescing binary signals.

We analyze the consequences that the choice of the output of the system has in the efficiency of signal detection. It is shown that the output signal and the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), used to characterize the phenomenon of stochastic resonance, strongly depend on the form of the output. In particular, the SNR may be enhanced for an adequate output.
