La (De)construcció de la masculinitat en el teatre de David Mamet

La reflexió efectuada per la teoria contemporania sobre la representació del genere es materialitza d'una manera privilegiada en el teatre. Esta clar que la perforrnativitat intrinseca del fenomen teatral és un espai idoni per qüestionar la construcció de la representació generica. No hi ha dubte que I'especificitat comunicativa del teatre es troba en la «fisicalitat)): I'element corporal té una importancia clau, ja síguí per la presencia física de I'equip actoral i del públic i per la condició efímera (el fet que cap representació no és igual a cap altra). Judith Butler ha escrit sobre el fet que els actes que constitueixen el genere tenen un paral.lelisrne en les actes performatius dels contextos teatrals. La identitat de genere no és una identitat completa, sinó que és una identitat que es construeix, una realització performativa en la qual creiern, i que representem corn si fos una creenca, com si fos una qüestió de fe. Per tant, les possibilitats de transformació del genere es troben en la relació arbitraria d'aquests actes i en la possibilitat d'un altre tipus de repetició (Butler, 1990: 33). L'obra del dramaturg, director, guionista i assagista nord-america David Marnet pot considerar-se una reflexió sobre la construcció de la masculinitat i, de retruc, de les tensions i reptes a que la masculinitat es troba sotmesa en el tornbant de segle. 1. Punto de encuentro: la vida es un tango y la muerte un pasodoble

Les persones compartim amb la resta d’ésser vius el fet de néixer, de créixer i de reproduir-nos, però, l’etapa de la mort la obviem o l’intentem amagar. Quan ens referim a les persones, parlem de l’última etapa del cicle vital anomenant-la vellesa, excloent així la mort de les etapes que formen el cicle. Punto de encuentro és un documental que parla d’aquesta etapa, de la vellesa, de com és viscuda, amb quines sensacions s’hi arriba, quin és el balanç o la reflexió que fan els avis quan ja han viscut tants anys i han acumulat tantes experiències. S’hi inclouen molts temes, la política, la soledat, la tristesa, les coses bones que té estar jubilat, com és el dia a dia d’una persona gran quan viu tota sola, els records de temps passats. Tot això ho podrem descobrir al documental a través del punt de vista i la pròpia experiència l’experiència dels protagonistes de Punto de encuentro: la Maria, el Bernabé, la Paquita i l’Albino.

Speed limit laws in America: economics, politics and geography

The regulation of speed limits in the US had been centralized at the federal level since 1974, until decisions were devolved to the states in 1995. However, the centralization debate has reemerged in recent years. Here, we conduct the first econometric analysis of the determinants of speed limit laws. By using economic, geographic and political variables, our results suggest that geography -which affects private mobility needs and preferences- is the main factor influencing speed limit laws. We also highlight the role played by political ideology, with Republican constituencies being associated with higher speed limits. Furthermore, we identify the presence of regional and time dependence effects. By contrast, poor road safety outcomes do not impede the enactment of high speed limits. Overall, we present the first evidence of the role played by geographical, ideological and regional characteristics, which provide us with a better understanding of the formulation of speed limit policies.

A comparative study of the two published Catalan translations of Charles Dickens’ David Copperfield, the first translated by Josep Carner in 1930 but not published until 1964, and the second by Joan Sellent in 2003. The analysis shows that both translations, magnificent, reflect the unique evolution of the language model that the translators pass on to their readers, an evolution shaped by the complex history of the Catalan language in the 20th century, which is still to be written

In this paper a brief outline of the origin and development of vocational guidance and career development during the 20thcentury is presented We elaborate a summary of the changes society has suffered during the last decades, and which affect career counselling either directly or indirectly, and which imply a need for modifications in the current approach to career counselling. Subsequently, we propose new perspectives that will be needed to face these changes, and which have been suggested by different authors. Also some competencies needed by career counselors while acting at different levels of intervention are suggested

Pork Barrel politics in semi-democracies: the Spanish 'Parlamentary roads', 1874-1915

This paper analyzes the effects of parliamentary representation on road infrastructure expenditure during the Spanish Restoration. Using a panel dataset of Spanish provinces in 1880-1914 we find that the allocation of administrative resources among provinces depended both on the delegation characteristics (such as the share of MPs with party leadership positions, and their degree of electoral independence), and the regime"s global search for stability. These results point to the importance of electoral dynamics within semi-democratic political systems, and offer an example of the influence of government tactics on infrastructure allocation.

The Social Politics of Fatherhood in Spain and France: A Comparative Analysis of Parental Leave and Shared Residence The article provides a comparative analysis of policy developments on leaves for fathers and joint custody in Spain and France in the last decade. These two types of measures have been selected because they are both widely recognised as main instruments to promote new fathering styles and consequently more gender equality in the European Union. While the rhetoric of choice has been developed in both countries in relation to maternal employment and childcare, with better results in France than in Spain, it remains to be seen to what extent choice will also be extended to fathers.
