Synovial fluid examination for the diagnosis of synovial amyloidosis in patients with chronic renal failure undergoing haemodialysis

The diagnosis of synovial amyloidosis is based upon synovial biopsy. Synovial fluid (SF) in seven patients with amyloid arthropathy associated with chronic renal failure undergoing haemodialysis were studied. The SF and synovial samples of 10 consecutive patients with seronegative mono- or oligoarthritis served as controls. Six of the seven patients with amyloid positive synovial biopsy specimens showed amyloid in their SF. No amyloid was found in the synovial tissue or fluid of the 10 patients in the control group, the sensitivity being 87.7%. The finding of amyloid in SF was highly reproducible, showing its presence in the same joint on several occasions. The deposits were Congophilia resistant to potassium permanganate pretreatment, and the immunohistochemical analysis proved that they contained beta 2 microglobulin. Quasi-two-dimensional electrodeposition under forced fluid flow

Experimental quasi-two-dimensional Zn electrodeposits are grown under forced convection conditions. Large-scale effects, with preferential growth towards the impinging flow, together with small-scale roughness suppression effects are evidenced and separately analyzed by using two different radial cell configurations. Interpretations are given in terms of primary concepts concerning current and concentration distributions.

El 1716 es publicà a Milà un text que fa una àmplia justificació històrica i política de la causa de Carles III d'Àustria a la Guerra de Successió d'Espanya (1702-1715). L'obra, de dimensions considerables (72 pàgines), va ser redactada per un eclesiàstic castellà que participà a la defensa de Barcelona durant el darrer setge i que va ser desterrat a Itàlia per les noves autoritats borbòniques. L'article analitza algunes de les idees centrals del text, com ara: l'oposició a la tirania borbònica i la defensa d'una monarquia moderada; la identificació de l'entronització de Felip V com el trencament de l'equilibri europeu i el punt culminant de la decadència d'Espanya; la denúncia de la traïció dels aliats; la vindicació de l'austriacisme castellà i la crítica al borbonisme d'alguns sectors catalans; i la descripció de la repressió i de l'exili.

Theory of Wetting-Induced Fluid Entrainment by Advancing Contact Lines on Dry Surfaces

We report on the onset of fluid entrainment when a contact line is forced to advance over a dry solid of arbitrary wettability. We show that entrainment occurs at a critical advancing speed beyond which the balance between capillary, viscous, and contact-line forces sustaining the shape of the interface is no longer satisfied. Wetting couples to the hydrodynamics by setting both the morphology of the interface at small scales and the viscous friction of the front. We find that the critical deformation that the interface can sustain is controlled by the friction at the contact line and the viscosity contrast between the displacing and displaced fluids, leading to a rich variety of wetting-entrainment regimes. We discuss the potential use of our theory to measure contact-line forces using atomic force microscopy and to study entrainment under microfluidic conditions exploiting colloid-polymer fluids of ultralow surface tension.

Fluid dynamical prediction of changed v1-flow at energies available at the CERN Large Hadron Collider

Substantial collective flow is observed in collisions between lead nuclei at Large Hadron Collider (LHC) as evidenced by the azimuthal correlations in the transverse momentum distributions of the produced particles. Our calculations indicate that the global v1-flow, which at RHIC peaked at negative rapidities (named third flow component or antiflow), now at LHC is going to turn toward forward rapidities (to the same side and direction as the projectile residue). Potentially this can provide a sensitive barometer to estimate the pressure and transport properties of the quark-gluon plasma. Our calculations also take into account the initial state center-of-mass rapidity fluctuations, and demonstrate that these are crucial for v1 simulations. In order to better study the transverse momentum flow dependence we suggest a new"symmetrized" vS1(pt) function, and we also propose a new method to disentangle global v1 flow from the contribution generated by the random fluctuations in the initial state. This will enhance the possibilities of studying the collective Global v1 flow both at the STAR Beam Energy Scan program and at LHC.

El documento de trabajo contiene descripción y documentación de cómo trabajar películas en el aula de lengua y literatura en la etapa de educación primaria y secundaria. El cine es la maquinaria más formidable de desplegar emociones y conectarnos con el mundo, con las personas, con la vida. Desde que nació la “pantalla fascinadora” a finales del siglo XIX, el cine ha ido evolucionando y transformándose adoptando distintas formas. Pero a pesar de ello, su fuerza comunicativa y motivadora sigue siendo fascinante, desbordante, mágica.Cada vez son más son compartidas las grandes contribuciones pedagógicas del uso del cine en clase para promover conocimientos interdisciplinarios, contextualizar contenidos de enseñanza, favorecer la identificación sujeto-objeto, recuperar el carácter documental que el cine posee desde sus inicios, ahondar en el enfoque comunicativo que proporciona para el aprendizaje de lenguas extranjeras, el acercamiento a la literatura, establecer y reconocer relaciones intertextuales con otros textos y para educar en el goce artístico-lúdico. A todas estas contribuciones pedagógicas tenemos que añadir que en la pantalla conviven varios lenguajes: el verbal, el no verbal y el audiovisual, fundamentales para el desarrollo del intelecto humano. La multimodalidad es inherente al lenguaje cinematográfico, y tenemos que saber leer e interpretar los mensajes en distintos códigos. Desde Cinescola defendemos la necesidad de desarrollar la alfabetización múltiple (Unión Europea, 2012), que tanto engloba las competencias de lectura como de escritura para la comprensión, utilización y evaluación crítica de diferentes formas de información y textos. En esta línea, presentaremos propuestas didácticas experimentadas para educación primaria y secundaria que fomentan la comprensión tanto del lenguaje verbal como el audiovisual. Sustentadas en el proceso de recepción lectora y sus distintas fases, se apoyan en dos estrategias clave para la fase de comprensión e interpretación: la estrategia de comparación de textos breves (cinematográfico, literario, narrativo, ilustrado, etc.) y la estrategia de traducción de textos (por ejemplo, explicar con imágenes un fragmento escrito, narrar de forma oral o escrita una secuencia fílmica, etc.). Con ello, contribuimos de forma clara al desarrollo de la competencia comunicativa lingüística y la audiovisual a partir del cine. En nuestra pantalla proyectaremos secuencias de las películas Smoke (Wang, 1995); Akeelah and the Bee (Doug Atchinson, 2006); El pequeño vampiro (Edel, 2000); Mis tardes con Margueritte (Becker, 2010); junto con la novela El cine de Claudia (Breu, 2014) para aprender cine a través de una novela.

La resistència liberal de Lleida davant la invasió dels Cent Mil Fills de Sant Lluís

Davant del fracàs de la contrarevolució interior efectuada pels reialistes, a partir pràcticament de l’inici del sistema constitucional inaugurat per la revolució de Riego, els elements més absolutistes van organitzar mitjançant la celebració del Congrés de Verona la invasió del territori espanyol per les tropes franceses (els Cent Mil Fills de Sant Lluís). La reacció de les institucions locals lleidatanes, sobretot la Paeria (l’Ajuntament) no es va fer esperar. Ràpidament van rebutjar ferventment la imposició estrangera i van organitzar la resistència a l’interior de la ciutat. Aquesta resistència va topar amb la penúria econòmica de la hisenda municipal, motiu pel qual van haver de realitzar una guerra defensiva, que va tenir èxit, ja que van resistir la invasió fins a l’últim dia d’octubre de l’any 1823 i es van convertir, juntament amb ciutats com ara Barcelona o Tarragona, en els baluards del liberalisme.

Fluid flow processes at basin scale

S u b s u r face fluid flow plays a significant role in many geologic processes and is increasingly being studied in the scale of sedimentary basins and geologic time perspective. Many economic resources such as petroleum and mineral deposits are products of basin scale fluid flow operating over large periods of time. Such ancient flow systems can be studied through analysis of diagenetic alterations and fluid inclusions to constrain physical and chemical conditions of fluids and rocks during their paleohy d r og e o l ogic evolution. Basin simulation models are useful to complement the paleohy d r og e o l ogic record preserved in the rocks and to derive conceptual models on hydraulic basin evolution and generation of economic resources. Different types of fluid flow regimes may evo l ve during basin evolution. The most important with respect to flow rates and capacity for transport of solutes and thermal energy is gr avitational fluid flow driven by the topographic configuration of a basin. Such flow systems require the basin to be elevated above sea level. Consolidational fluid flow is the principal fluid migration process in basins below sea level, caused by loading of compressible rocks. Flow rates of such systems are several orders of magnitude below topogr a p hy driven flow. Howeve r, consolidation may create significant fluid ove rpressure. Episodic dewatering of ove rpressured compart m e n t s m ay cause sudden fluid release with elevated flow velocities and may cause a transient local thermal and chemical disequilibrium betwe e n fluid and rock. This paper gives an ove rv i ew on subsurface fluid flow processes at basin scale and presents examples related to the Pe n e d è s basin in the central Catalan continental margin including the offshore Barcelona half-graben and the compressive South-Pyrenean basin.

Aquest treball presenta una anàlisi textual de l'obra de Maria Aurèlia Capmany 'Feliçment, jo sóc una dona'. D'una banda, a través d'una breu presentació de l'autora fins al moment de la publicació de l'obra i, d'una altra, d'una síntesi del feminisme a Catalunya, l'autora del treball ens apropa a les teories feministes que Capmany aboca en la seva novel·la, fet que representa un punt d'inflació en la seva trajectòria novel·lística. L'anàlisi textual ens permet apropar-nos al concepte d'identitat femenina i a la seva construcció, així com relacionar-lo amb les teories feministes més recents.

Radial displacement of a fluid annulus in a rotating Hele-Shaw cell

The radial displacement of a fluid annulus in a rotating circular HeleShaw cell has been investigated experimentally. It has been found that the flow depends sensitively on the wetting conditions at the outer interface. Displacements in a prewet cell are well described by Darcy"s law in a wide range of experimental parameters, with little influence of capillary effects. In a dry cell, however, a more careful analysis of the interfacemotion is required; the interplay between a gradual loss of fluid at the inner interface, and the dependence of capillary forces at the outer interface on interfacial velocity and dynamic contact angle, result in a constant velocity for the interfaces. The experimental results in this case correlate in the form of an empirical scaling relation between the capillary number Ca and a dimensionless group, related to the ratio of centrifugal to capillary forces, which spans about three orders of magnitude in both quantities. Finally, the relative thickness of the coating film left by the inner interface is obtained as a function of Ca.

Using computational fluid dynamics to predict head losses in the auxiliary elements of a microirrigation sand filter

It is often assumed that total head losses in a sand filter are solely due to the filtration media and that there are analytical solutions, such as the Ergun equation, to compute them. However, total head losses are also due to auxiliary elements (inlet and outlet pipes and filter nozzles), which produce undesirable head losses because they increase energy requirements without contributing to the filtration process. In this study, ANSYS Fluent version 6.3, a commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software program, was used to compute head losses in different parts of a sand filter. Six different numerical filter models of varying complexities were used to understand the hydraulic behavior of the several filter elements and their importance in total head losses. The simulation results show that 84.6% of these were caused by the sand bed and 15.4% were due to auxiliary elements (4.4% in the outlet and inlet pipes, and 11.0% in the perforated plate and nozzles). Simulation results with different models show the important role of the nozzles in the hydraulic behavior of the sand filter. The relationship between the passing area through the nozzles and the passing area through the perforated plate is an important design parameter for the reduction of total head losses. A reduced relationship caused by nozzle clogging would disproportionately increase the total head losses in the sand filter
