Respiratory chain dysfunction associated with multiple mitochondrial DNA deletions in antiretroviral therapy-related lipodystrophy.

Highly-active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) can induce a characteristic lipodystrophy syndrome characterized by peripheral fat wasting and central adiposity, usually associated with hyperlipidaemia and insulin resistance [1,2]. X-ray diffraction, thermal analysis, and Raman scattering study of K2BeF4 and comparation to other member of the (beta)-K2SO4 family with ferroelectric -paraelectric transition

Thermal analysis, powder diffraction, and Raman scattering as a function of the temperature were carried out on K2BeF4. Moreover, the crystal structure was determined at 293 K from powder diffraction. The compound shows a transition from Pna21 to Pnam space group at 921 K with a transition enthalpy of 5 kJ/mol. The transition is assumed to be first order because the compound shows metastability. Structurally and spectroscopically the transition is similar to those observed in (NH4)2SO4, which suggests that the low-temperature phase is ferroelectric. In order to confirm it, the spontaneous polarization has been computed using an ionic model.

De las competencias básicas a las competencias profesionales transversales. Aportaciones desde el ámbito de la educación física.

En el ámbito de la educación superior empieza a adquirir relevancia el debate sobre las competencias, que relaciona directamente la cultura universitaria con el aprendizaje a lo largo de la vida y el mundo del trabajo. En este artículo se parte de un marco teórico actual sobre el concepto de competencias en el contexto de la OCDE, y cómo éste se ha ido incorporando a nuestro sistema educativo y a la formación universitaria. En un futuro próximo, bajo el marco del EEES, la formación inicial de maestros y maestras deberá vertebrarse en torno a la adquisición de competencias profesionales: específicas y transversales. Al margen de un proceso de enseñanza y aprendizaje centrado en laactividad del alumnado, este hecho también supondrá concebir planes de estudio contextualizados con el marco curricular vigente y con la realidad social de las aulas.Por todo ello consideramos oportuno describir el proceso que, en este sentido, está siguiendo la Facultad de Formación del Profesorado de la Universidad de Barcelona. En concreto mostramos cómo se está afrontando el reto de seleccionar y definir las competencias profesionales transversales. Asimismo también reflexionamos en torno a lo que nuestra disciplina puede aportar a la hora de seleccionar, definir y fomentar estas competencias que, en cierto modo, pueden y deben ser asumidas por todas las áreas de conocimiento que desarrollarán el título de primaria.

Analitza el pensament del professorat d'una escola rural davant el fenomen de la diversitat cultural. El treball intenta fer emergir els aspectes fonamentals que potenciaran o limitaran l'acció educativa del professorat i de l'escola per tal de normalitzar i d'incloure l'alumnat nouvingut i/o d'altres comunitats culturals ja afincades a la zona.

In the past Spanish workers moved to Europe. Now Spain is among the three major countries attracting immigrants from developing countries. In the past Spain received a lot of Foreign Investment, today many Spanish companies are investing abroad. The changes are not only due to membership to the EU but also to the Spanish accommodation to the Globalization.

España y las organizaciones internacionales

Al llarg del segle XIX Espanya va ser un soci actiu per la creació de les primeres organitzacions mundials de caràcter tècnic. Durant el segle XX España va participar en l'establiment de la Societat de Nacions creada desprès de La Primera Guerra Mundial, però el regim favorable a l'Eix de Franco fou inicialment exclòs de les Nacions Unides, les institucions de Bretton Woods, GATT i Pla Marshall i les agencies creades desprès de la Segona Guerra Mundial. L'escenari de la Guerra Freda va fer possible que el regim de Franco fos admès al Sistema de les Nacions Unides i les principals organitzacions econòmiques internacionals. Nomes desprès de la mort de Franco, la Monarquia Constitucional Española va poder ingresar plenament en la integració europees i les organitzacions occidentals de caràcter polític. España es actualment un dels països mes involucrats en els esforços internacionals per crear Bens Públics Globals a través d'organitzacions internacionals i de la Unió Europea.

Frequency resolved admittance spectroscopy measurements on In0.52Al0.48As/InxGa1¿xAs/In0.52Al0.48As single quantum well structures

In this work a new admittance spectroscopy technique is proposed to determine the conduction band offset in single quantum well structures (SQW). The proposed technique is based on the study of the capacitance derivative versus the frequency logarithm. This method is found to be less sensitive to parasitic effects, such as leakage current and series resistance, than the classical conductance analysis. Using this technique, we have determined the conduction band offset in In0.52Al0.48As/InxGa1¿xAs/In0.52Al0.48As SQW structures. Two different well compositions, x=0.53, which corresponds to the lattice¿matched case and x=0.60, which corresponds to a strained case, and two well widths (5 and 25 nm) have been considered. The average results are ¿Ec=0.49±0.04 eV for x=0.53 and ¿Ec =0.51±0.04 eV for x=0.6, which are in good agreement with previous reported data.

Growth, optical characterization, and laser operation of a stoichiometric crystal KYb(WO4)(2)

We present our recent achievements in the growing and optical characterization of KYb(WO4)2 (hereafter KYbW) crystals and demonstrate laser operation in this stoichiometric material. Single crystals of KYbW with optimal crystalline quality have been grown by the top-seeded-solution growth slow-cooling method. The optical anisotropy of this monoclinic crystal has been characterized, locating the tensor of the optical indicatrix and measuring the dispersion of the principal values of the refractive indices as well as the thermo-optic coefficients. Sellmeier equations have been constructed valid in the visible and near-IR spectral range. Raman scattering has been used to determine the phonon energies of KYbW and a simple physical model is applied for classification of the lattice vibration modes. Spectroscopic studies (absorption and emission measurements at room and low temperature) have been carried out in the spectral region near 1 µm characteristic for the ytterbium transition. Energy positions of the Stark sublevels of the ground and the excited state manifolds have been determined and the vibronic substructure has been identified. The intrinsic lifetime of the upper laser level has been measured taking care to suppress the effect of reabsorption and the intrinsic quantum efficiency has been estimated. Lasing has been demonstrated near 1074 nm with 41% slope efficiency at room temperature using a 0.5 mm thin plate of KYbW. This laser material holds great promise for diode pumped high-power lasers, thin disk and waveguide designs as well as for ultrashort (ps/fs) pulse laser systems.

Ba3Yb(BO3)3 single crystals. Growth and spectroscopic characterization

We obtained Ba3Yb(BO3)3 single crystals by the flux method with solutions of the BaB2O4Na2OYb2O3 system. The evolution of the cell parameters with temperature shows a slope change at temperatures near 873 K, which may indicate a phase transition that is not observed by changes appearing in the x-ray powder patterns or by differential thermal analysis (DTA). The evolution of the diffraction patterns with the temperature shows incongruent melting at temperatures higher than 1473 K. DTA indicates that there is incongruent melting and this process is irreversible. Ba3Yb(BO3)3 has a wide transparency window from 247 to 3900 nm. We recorded optical absorption and emission spectra at room and low temperature, and we determined the splitting of Yb3+ ions. We used the reciprocity method to calculate the maximum emission cross section of 0.28 10-20 cm2 at 966 nm. The calculated lifetime of Yb3+ in Ba3Yb(BO3)3 is trad = 2.62 ms, while the measured lifetime is t = 3.80 ms.

Max-convex decompositions for cooperative TU games

We show that any cooperative TU game is the maximum of a finite collection of convex games. This max-convex decomposition can be refined by using convex games with non-negative dividends for all coalitions of at least two players. As a consequence of the above results we show that the class of modular games is a set of generators of the distributive lattice of all cooperative TU games. Finally, we characterize zero-monotonic games using a strong max-convex decomposition
