One of the most persistent and lasting debates in economic research refers to whether the answers to subjective questions can be used to explain individuals’ economic behavior. Using panel data for twelve EU countries, in the present study we analyze the causal relationship between self-reported housing satisfaction and residential mobility. Our results indicate that: i) households unsatisfied with their current housing situation are more likely to move; ii) housing satisfaction raises after a move, and; iii) housing satisfaction increases with the transition from being a renter to becoming a homeowner. Some interesting cross-country differences are observed. Our findings provide evidence in favor of use of subjective indicators of satisfaction with certain life domains in the analysis of individuals’ economic conduct.

The objective of the research is to know the factors that in Spain determine the choice of banking organization. The obtained results indicate that the dimension of the network of branches is the reason more valued. In spite of the increasing symmetry of the Spanish banking market, the preferences of the clients of the savings banks and those of the banks are not absolutely coincident, being the proximity - the main reason for election- much more valued by the former than by the latter. The existence of divergences in the preferences has also been detected according to the region and the typology of city of residence.

The experiment aimed to study approach and locomotive behaviour as indicators of fear in a novel object test carried out in pigs. Thirty post-weaning (30 kg) and 30 finishing (90 kg) pigs were exposed to visual, auditory and olfactory novel stimuli during 2 different experiments. The facilities consisted of a test pen in which a trough was located. The trough contained chopped apples. Once the animals were trained to enter the test pen individually they were subjected to 3 different fear stimuli. These stimuli were applied in the test pen and next to the trough. The variables studied were feeding behaviour, approach behaviour (the distance and position of the animal with respect to the trough) and locomotive behaviour (general activity, reluctance to move, turning back and retreat attempts). Two groups were studied: saline and midazolam treated group. Twenty minutes before the start of the sessions, 15 post-weaning and finishing pigs received an intramuscular injection of 0.20 and 0.15 mg/kg, respectively, midazolam (Dormicum1). The saline pigs (15 animals per group) were injected with saline. The administration of midazolam increased the feeding behaviour and approaching behaviour, and reduced the locomotive behaviour. In front of the visual and olfactory stimuli post-weaning pigs showed a higher general activity than finishing pigs, but the contrary was found when the auditory stimulus was applied. The olfactory stimulus was more related to the turning back behaviour, whereas the visual stimulus was more related to retreat attempts. Although it could be concluded that reluctant to move was the most common response to the different fear stimuli applied in our study regardless of the age of animals, the combination of reluctant to move and turning back would be a good criterion to assess fear in domestic pigs. The use of midazolam as anxiolytic for studies of fear in commercial conditions in pigs is recommended.

This paper explores the earnings return to Catalan knowledge for public and private workers in Catalonia. In doing so, we allow for a double simultaneous selection process. We consider, on the one hand, the non-random allocation of workers into one sector or another, and on the other, the potential self-selection into Catalan proficiency. In addition, when correcting the earnings equations, we take into account the correlation between the two selectivity rules. Our findings suggest that the apparent higher language return for public sector workers is entirely accounted for by selection effects, whereas knowledge of Catalan has a significant positive return in the private sector, which is somewhat higher when the selection processes are taken into account.

We experimentally investigate in the laboratory two prominent mechanisms that are employed in school choice programs to assign students to public schools. We study how individual behavior is influenced by preference intensities and risk aversion. Our main results show that (a) the Gale-Shapley mechanism is more robust to changes in cardinal preferences than the Boston mechanism independently of whether individuals can submit a complete or only a restricted ranking of the schools and (b) subjects with a higher degree of risk aversion are more likely to play "safer" strategies under the Gale-Shapley but not under the Boston mechanism. Both results have important implications for the efficiency and the stability of the mechanisms.

We analyze the impact of working and contractual conditions, particularly exposure to job risks, on the probability of acquiring a disability. We postulate a model in which this impact is mediated by the choice of occupation, with a level of risk associated to it. We assume this choice is endogenous, and that it depends on preferences and opportunities in the labour market, both of which may differ between immigrants and natives. To test this hypothesis we use data from the Continuous Sample of Working Lives of the Spanish SS system. It contains individual, job and firm information of over a million workers, including a representative sample of immigrants. We find that risk exposure increases the probability of permanent disability by 5.3%; temporary employment also influences health. Migrant status -with differences among regions of origin- significantly affects both disability and the probability of being employed in a risky occupation. Most groups of immigrants work in riskier jobs, but have lower probability of becoming disabled. Nevertheless, our theoretical hypothesis that disability and risk are jointly determined is not valid for immigrants: i.e. for them working conditions is not a matter of choice in terms of health.

We discuss the connections between the defined concepts under different assumptions on their domains of definition. We characterize the social choice functions that satisfy each one of them and whose ranges consist of two alternatives, in terms of two types of basic properties.

This paper explores the factors that determine firm’s R&D cooperation with different partners, paying special attention on the role of tertiary education (degree and PhDs level) in facilitating the connection between the firms and the to scientific bodies (technology centres, public research centres and universities). Here, we attempt to answer two questions. First, are innovative firms that carry out internal and external R&D activities more likely to cooperate on R&D projects with other partners? Second, do Spanish innovative firms with a high participation of researchers with degrees or PhDs tend to cooperate more with scientific partners? To answer both questions we apply a three-dimensional approach on a firm level Panel Data with a sample of 4.998 manufacturing and services Spanish firms. First, we run a complementary test between external R&D acquisition and skilled research workers and find that firms which carry out external R&D activities obtain a greater return on R&D cooperation when they have skilled workers in R&D, especially in high-tech manufactures and KIS services. Second, we carry out a 2-step tobit model to estimate, in the first stage, the determinants that explain whether Spanish innovative firms cooperate or not; and in the second stage the factors that affect the choice of partners. And third, we apply an ordered probit model to test the marginal effects of explanatory variables on the different partners. Here we contrast some of the most interesting empirical hypotheses of previous studies, and which emphasize the role of employees with degrees and PhDs in facilitating cooperative R&D between firms and scientific partners.

This article provides a theoretical and empirical analysis of a firm's optimal R&D strategy choice. In this paper a firm's R&D strategy is assumed to be endogenous and allowed to depend on both internal firms. characteristics and external factors. Firms choose between two strategies, either they engage in R&D or abstain from own R&D and imitate the outcomes of innovators. In the theoretical model this yields three types of equilibria in which either all firms innovate, some firms innovate and others imitate, or no firm innovates. Firms'equilibrium strategies crucially depend on external factors. We find that the efficiency of intellectual property rights protection positively affects firms'incentives to engage in R&D, while competitive pressure has a negative effect. In addition, smaller firms are found to be more likely to become imitators when the product is homogeneous and the level of spillovers is high. These results are supported by empirical evidence for German .rms from manufacturing and services sectors. Regarding social welfare our results indicate that strengthening intellectual property protection can have an ambiguous effect. In markets characterized by a high rate of innovation a reduction of intellectual property rights protection can discourage innovative performance substantially. However, a reduction of patent protection can also increase social welfare because it may induce imitation. This indicates that policy issues such as the optimal length and breadth of patent protection cannot be resolved without taking into account specific market and firm characteristics. We use historical data that cover more than one century on real GDP for industrial countries and employ the Pesaran panel unit root test that allows for cross-sectional dependence to test for a unit root on real GDP. We find strong evidence against the unit root null. Our results are robust to the chosen group of countries and the sample period. La manometría convencional es el “gold standard” para diagnosticar trastornos motores del esófago, pero la información que da sobre la repercusión funcional de estas alteraciones es escasa. La manometría de alta resolución permite estudiar con detalle la motilidad esofagogástrica mediante la generación de mapas topográficos de presiones desde la orofaringe hasta el estómago. Hipótesis: Si la generación de mapas topográficos de presiones en el esófago mediante manometría de alta resolución demuestra la resistencia al flujo esofagogástrico. Objetivo: Comprobar si un test con sobrecarga de agua puede mostrar la presencia de resistencia al flujo esofagogástrico en pacientes con acalasia. Método: Estudiamos 2 grupos de pacientes con alteración de la motilidad esofágica. Un grupo de 8 pacientes que cumplen criterios manométricos de acalasia y, como grupo control, 8 pacientes con disfunción del peristaltismo esofágico ( DPE). A cada paciente se le realizó un test de sobrecarga que consistía en la ingesta rápida de 200 ml de agua mientras se registraban las presiones esofágicas. Resultados: Los pacientes con acalasia ingirieron el agua más lentamente que los pacientes con DPE (82± 14 seg vs 34± 6 seg, p&0,05). Mientras la unión gastroesofágica (UGE) permaneció contraída en el grupo de pacientes con acalasia (46,6± 6 mm Hg; p&0,05), permaneció relajada durante el tiempo del ingesta en pacientes con DPE ( 16,6 ± 4,7 mm Hg). La unión esófago-gástrica (UGE) experimentó una migración proximal en pacientes con acalasia de 1,3 ± 0 cm mientras que en el grupo control no migró (0 cm; p&0,05). La ingesta de agua se asoció a un incremento de la presión del esófago distal (2 cm por encima de la UGE) significativamente mayor en los pacientes con acalasia que en los pacientes con DPE (42,2 ± 20 vs 9,5± 7,9 mm Hg respectivamente, p&0,05) lo que produjo un incremento del gradiente de presión esófago-gástrico en pacientes con acalasia (16± 0,9 mmHg) que no se observó en los pacientes con DPE (0,1 ± 0,4 mmHg ; p&0,05). Conclusión: Un test con sobrecarga de agua durante la medición de la topografía y de las presiones esofágicas demuestra obstrucción al flujo esofagogástrico en los pacientes con acalasia. Este test podría contribuir a valorar la repercusión funcional en pacientes con acalasia y podría servir para el seguimiento de pacientes con acalasia tratados.

TFC que segueix l'esquema d'un projecte cultural. D'una banda, s'analitzen els factors interns i externs de l'organització que poden influir en l'execució d'aquest projecte. El clímax és la creació d'una exposició permanent per a un museu Comediants. Interpretant el discurs de Comediants es proposa un discurs expositiu. Interessant elecció de missatges i divertits recursos expositius. Des del començament s'ha volgut fugir de la idea d'elaborar un TFC on solament se sintetitzessin dades i informació. Tanmateix, aquest TFC és un treball de recerca i, com a tal, la major part és la síntesi de dades i informacions obtingudes mitjançant investigació. No obstant això, hi ha una altra part molt important amb aportacions personals on s'ha posat a prova la pròpia creativitat i la capacitat de proporcionar aspectes innovadors, els quals, al cap i a la fi, han sorgit arran del treball en grup.
