En la carrera del mundo de los videojuegos por alcanzar insospechables cotas de realismo con las que seguir sorprendiendo y enganchando al público, los motores de física se han convertido en la herramienta de presente y futuro. Atraídos por el auge de esta nueva tecnología, hemos lidiado con los motores referencia hoy día en el mercado, seleccionando luego uno de ellos e implementando un humilde videojuego de carreras como muestra de su potencial y de los conocimientos adquiridos.

Growth of 'global cities' in the 1980s was supposed to have involved an occupational polarisation, including growth of low paid service jobs. Though held to be untrue for European cities, at the time, some such growth did emerge in London a decade later than first reported for New York. The question is whether there was simply a delay before London conformed to the global city model, or whether another distinct cause was at work in both cases. This paper proposes that the critical factor in both cases was actually an upsurge of immigration from poor countries providing an elastic supply of cheap labour. This hypothesis and its counterpart based on growth in elite jobs are tested econometrically for the British case with regional data spanning 1975-2008, finding some support for both effects, but with immigration from poor countries as the crucial influence in late 1990s London. The higher education sector has become increasingly competitive and prospective students are adopting a consumerist approach to institution and programme choice. In response, higher education marketing has become more complex, market-oriented and business-like. Financial sustainability of open education resource (OER) projects is a widespread concern. This paper explores the extent to which a classical product placement framework can be applied to OERs to justify institutional funding in OER projects as a marketing investment. It is argued that OERs designed on this premise can increase cognitive, affective and conative brand outcomes while providing the traditional educational and societal benefits associated with OERs. A series of propositions are presented that may form the basis of a future research agenda.

La Biblioteca de la UOC (UOC Library) ha ofert durant tres mesos (octubre-desembre 09), en fase de prova pilot, un servei de consulta i préstec de lectors de llibres electrònics (e-readers). Aquest nou desplegament s'ha desenvolupat en consonància amb l'aposta general de la Universitat en innovació en tecnologies aplicades a l'educació, i la voluntat de potenciar les col·leccions de llibres electrònics i l'ús dels dispositius de lectura de llibres electrònics com una extensió més de la tecnologia del Campus 5.0, en el suport a l'aprenentatge dels seus estudiants durant la seva formació a la Universitat. Aquest treball presenta en detall les especificacions de la prova pilot, a més de contenir una anàlisi i avaluació dels resultats obtinguts: punts forts i punts febles, relació dels aspectes a millorar i modificar, de cara a la consolidació final del servei.

This paper presents an automatic vision-based system for UUV station keeping. The vehicle is equipped with a down-looking camera, which provides images of the sea-floor. The station keeping system is based on a feature-based motion detection algorithm, which exploits standard correlation and explicit textural analysis to solve the correspondence problem. A visual map of the area surveyed by the vehicle is constructed to increase the flexibility of the system, allowing the vehicle to position itself when it has lost the reference image. The testing platform is the URIS underwater vehicle. Experimental results demonstrating the behavior of the system on a real environment are presented

Autonomous underwater vehicles (AUV) represent a challenging control problem with complex, noisy, dynamics. Nowadays, not only the continuous scientific advances in underwater robotics but the increasing number of subsea missions and its complexity ask for an automatization of submarine processes. This paper proposes a high-level control system for solving the action selection problem of an autonomous robot. The system is characterized by the use of reinforcement learning direct policy search methods (RLDPS) for learning the internal state/action mapping of some behaviors. We demonstrate its feasibility with simulated experiments using the model of our underwater robot URIS in a target following task

In this paper, we consider the ATM networks in which the virtual path concept is implemented. The question of how to multiplex two or more diverse traffic classes while providing different quality of service requirements is a very complicated open problem. Two distinct options are available: integration and segregation. In an integration approach all the traffic from different connections are multiplexed onto one VP. This implies that the most restrictive QOS requirements must be applied to all services. Therefore, link utilization will be decreased because unnecessarily stringent QOS is provided to all connections. With the segregation approach the problem can be much simplified if different types of traffic are separated by assigning a VP with dedicated resources (buffers and links). Therefore, resources may not be efficiently utilized because no sharing of bandwidth can take place across the VP. The probability that the bandwidth required by the accepted connections exceeds the capacity of the link is evaluated with the probability of congestion (PC). Since the PC can be expressed as the CLP, we shall simply carry out bandwidth allocation using the PC. We first focus on the influence of some parameters (CLP, bit rate and burstiness) on the capacity required by a VP supporting a single traffic class using the new convolution approach. Numerical results are presented both to compare the required capacity and to observe which conditions under each approach are preferred

This work provides a general description of the multi sensor data fusion concept, along with a new classification of currently used sensor fusion techniques for unmanned underwater vehicles (UUV). Unlike previous proposals that focus the classification on the sensors involved in the fusion, we propose a synthetic approach that is focused on the techniques involved in the fusion and their applications in UUV navigation. We believe that our approach is better oriented towards the development of sensor fusion systems, since a sensor fusion architecture should be first of all focused on its goals and then on the fused sensors

This paper focuses on QoS routing with protection in an MPLS network over an optical layer. In this multi-layer scenario each layer deploys its own fault management methods. A partially protected optical layer is proposed and the rest of the network is protected at the MPLS layer. New protection schemes that avoid protection duplications are proposed. Moreover, this paper also introduces a new traffic classification based on the level of reliability. The failure impact is evaluated in terms of recovery time depending on the traffic class. The proposed schemes also include a novel variation of minimum interference routing and shared segment backup computation. A complete set of experiments proves that the proposed schemes are more efficient as compared to the previous ones, in terms of resources used to protect the network, failure impact and the request rejection ratio

Fins a la data d’avui, el grup VICOROB de la Universitat de Girona ha desenvolupat diversos vehicles autònoms (GARBÍ, URIS i ICTINEU). El projecte que comença aquest any té com objectiu desenvolupar un nou vehicle submarí autònom amb capacitat d’intervenció (I-AUV) gràcies a un braç manipulador. Aquest projecte final de carrera té com objectiu desenvolupar en entorn MATLAB un simulador d’un I-AUV, format per un AUV i un braç manipulador de n graus de llibertat per tal d’avaluar les reaccions dels moviments del braç, amb càrrega i sense, sobre el robot, iviceversa

En el Centre d'Investigació en Robòtica Submarina (CIRS) de la Universitat de Gironaes disposa de diferents robots submarins els quals utilitzen una arquitectura software anomenada Component Oriented Layered-based Architecture for Autonomy ( COLA2 ), la qual ha estat desenvolupada per estudiants i professors del mateix centre. Per tal de fer aquesta arquitectura més accessible per a professors i estudiant d’altres centres la COLA2 s’està adaptant al Robot Operative System (ROS) que és un framework genèricper al desenvolupament d’aplicacions amb robots. Aquest projecte pretén dissenyar un comportament per al robot Girona500 que estigui desenvolupat dins la versió ROS de l’arquitectura COLA2. El comportament haurà de fer mantenir una determinada posició al robot amb informació visual de la càmera del robot i amb dades de navegació. La tasca de mantenir la posició es de vital importància per a poder realitzar intervencions submarines que requereixen de precisió i, precisament, el medi on es treballa no ajuda

L’estudi consta de quatre etapes: estudi de les restriccions actuals dels sistemes d’admissió i escapament; anàlisi dels resultats de la culata de sèrie i proposta de millores aplicables al model real; càlcul de les restriccions creades pels models millorats, i finalment, estudi comparatiu dels resultats obtinguts, interpretant els resultats dels principals paràmetres a analitzar

L' objectiu d' aquest estudi és intentar millorar l' aerodinàmica de la nova carrosseria del vehicle de baix consum de la UdG,l' Àliga, a través de programes informàtics de CFD.Des de fa uns anys l' Escola Politècnica Superior de la Universitat de Girona participa a l' Eco Shell Marathon, mirant d' assolir els millors resultats possibles.El nom del vehicle utilitzat per aquesta carrera és l' Àliga.Aquest projecte parteix dels resultats obtinguts al Projece fi de carrera d' en Daniel Vilavedra Vilà (2006):"Redisseny aerodinàmic de la carrosseria del vehicle de baix consum Àliga"

The presentation will focus on the reasons for deploying an e-reader loan service at a virtual university library as a part of an e-learning support system to aid user mobility, concentration of documentary and electronic resources, and ICT skills acquisition, using the example of the UOC pilot project and its subsequent consolidation. E-reader devices at the UOC are an extension of the Virtual Campus. They are offered as a tool to aid user mobility, access to documentary and electronic resources, and development of information and IT skills. The e-reader loan service began as a pilot project in 2009 and was consolidated in 2010. The UOC Library piloted the e-reader loan service from October to December 2009. The pilot project was carried out with 15 devices and involved 37 loans. The project was extended into 2010 with the same number of devices and 218 loans (October 2010). In 2011 the e-reader loan service is to involve 190 devices, thus offering an improved service. The reasons for deploying an e-reader loan service at the UOC are the following: a) to offer library users access to the many kinds of learning materials available at the UOC through a single device that facilitates student study and learning; b) to enhance access to and use of the e-book collections subscribed to by the UOC Library; c) to align with UOC strategy on the development of learning materials in multiple formats, and promote e-devices as an extension of the UOC Virtual Campus, and d) to increase UOC Library visibility within and beyond the institution. The presentation will conclude with an analysis of the key issues to be taken into account at a university library: the e-reader market, the unclear business and license model for e-book contents, and the library's role in promoting new reading formats to increase use of e-collections.
