Simple and fast methods based on solid-phase extraction coupled to liquid chromatography with UV detection for the monitoring of caffeine in natural and waste waters as marker of anthropogenic impact

Two concentration methods for fast and routine determination of caffeine (using HPLC-UV detection) in surface, and wastewater are evaluated. Both methods are based on solid-phase extraction (SPE) concentration with octadecyl silica sorbents. A common “offline” SPE procedure shows that quantitative recovery of caffeine is obtained with 2 mL of an elution mixture solvent methanol-water containing at least 60% methanol. The method detection limit is 0.1 μg L−1 when percolating 1 L samples through the cartridge. The development of an “online” SPE method based on a mini-SPE column, containing 100 mg of the same sorbent, directly connected to the HPLC system allows the method detection limit to be decreased to 10 ng L−1 with a sample volume of 100 mL. The “offline” SPE method is applied to the analysis of caffeine in wastewater samples, whereas the “on-line” method is used for analysis in natural waters from streams receiving significant water intakes from local wastewater treatment plants

Las Redes Sociales Online (RSO) son cada día más populares. Las últimas investigaciones destacan su relevancia en el proceso de construcción de la identidad de género, ya que se encuentran los estereotipos de género clásicos y modulan el bienestar psicológico de los usuarios. Debido a la carencia de estudios españoles, el objetivo de la presente investigación fue conocer los perfiles de los jóvenes en la red social Facebook en términos de estereotipos de género, de personalidad y para comprender qué relación tiene una determinada presentación con el bienestar psicológico. Participaron en el estudio 112 jóvenes con una media de 23 años. Los instrumentos utilizados fueron la adaptación española del test TIPI (Oberst, Renau, Gosling & Rusiñol, manuscrito no publicado), la escala Redsocs y la Escala de Bienestar Psicológico de Ryff (Díaz & et al., 2006). Los resultados indicaron que las chicas estaban más implicadas en las RSO que los chicos, y que en ellas quieren generar un perfil andrógino, ya que para su bienestar psicológico valoran positivamente poseer tanto características femeninas como masculinas. Se concluye que la lucha para combatir los estereotipos de género se libra en un entorno offline o face to face, ya que las RSO ayudan a controlar estas diferencias.

Description of a robotics-oriented relational positioning methodology

This paper presents a relational positioning methodology for flexibly and intuitively specifying offline programmed robot tasks, as well as for assisting the execution of teleoperated tasks demanding precise movements.In relational positioning, the movements of an object can be restricted totally or partially by specifying its allowed positions in terms of a set of geometric constraints. These allowed positions are found by means of a 3D sequential geometric constraint solver called PMF – Positioning Mobile with respect to Fixed. PMF exploits the fact that in a set of geometric constraints, the rotational component can often be separated from the translational one and solved independently.

Sistema automàtic d'aprenentatge de preferències personals sobre notícies classificades en seccions i definides per paraules clau

Entrar a una pàgina web de continguts i trobar a l'instant allò que et ve de gust llegir, escoltar o veure en aquell precís instant és un dels somnis de molts internautes. Aquest projecte ha tingut com a objectiu dissenyar un prototip de sistema d'aprenentatge automàtic que va en aquesta línia, dins les possibilitats d'un projecte de final de carrera d'Enginyeria en Informàtica. El programa desenvolupat treballa sobre una mostra de documents classificats en una secció principal i definits per paraules clau. Està pensat per ser vàlid per a qualsevol repositori de dades però s'ha aplicat a un cas concret, l'aprenentatge de gustos sobre notícies del diari britànic 'The Guardian'. L'algoritme té un perfil ideal que modela el cervell d'un lector i un perfil evolutiu, que comença de zero i va aprenent a mesura que l'usuari va consumint notícies. L'aprenentatge s'ha aconseguit fent una simulació d'aquestes tries en dos corpus de notícies d'uns 6.000 articles cadascun. En cada iteració, l'algorisme té en compte un petit grup notícies, a les quals s'assignen dues valoracions, una d'acord amb el perfil ideal i una altra segons el perfil evolutiu. La diferència entre les dues seleccions és la que ens dóna informació per a l'aprenentatge, que s'ha abordat amb dues estratègies. L'aprenentatge online fa una petita variació al perfil evolutiu després de cada tria, mentre que l'offline s'espera a tenir més dades per trobar patrons de conducta i poder fer modificacions més de més magnitud. Després de diverses proves, s'ha comprovat que s'aconsegueix reduir la distància entre valoracions de les seccions principals i tags, comparant el perfil ideal i l'evolutiu abans i després de l'execució de l'algorisme d'aprenentatge.

Some of the challenges and experiences of formal education in a Mobile-Centric Society (MCS) = Algunos retos y experiencias de la educación formal en la Sociedad Móvil-Céntrica (SMC)

The aim of the paper is to describe some of the challenges faced by schools, or by formal education in general, as a consequence of today"s mobilecentric society (henceforth MCS), the term we will use to denote the new, networked learning ecology that has arisen from the massive penetration of digital media in everyday life. After revisiting some of the ideas of McLuhan and Vygotsky in the light of this new technological scenario, we describe five traits of the MCS and the challenges illustrated through educational practices that we believe schools will face if they wish to preserve their function of individualization and socialization. We believe that despite the emergence of the MCS, the main function of the school is still to provide the"box of tools" (a set of psychological instruments, such as reading, writing, mathematical notation, digital literacy, etc.) that enables people to develop their learning skills and life projects and to become part of communities and groups. However, the complexity and mobility of the new learning environments means that the position held by schools needs to be reevaluated in the face of the informal learning paths and experiences both online and offline to which learners now have access. We also need to reevaluate the meaning of the school itself as an institution and the model of learner it should be training

In a micro-founded model, we derive novel incentives for a monopoly search engine to distort its organic and its sponsored results on searches for online content and offline products. Distorting organic results towards content publishers with less effective display advertising and/or distorting sponsored results towards higher margin merchants (by underweighting consumer relevance in search auctions) increase per capita revenues but lower participation. The interplay of these incentives determines search bias and welfare. We also characterize how the welfare consequences of integration into display advertising, as intermediary or publisher, depend on asymmetries, monopolization and targeting.
