Este estudio ex post facto analiza las relaciones entre las dimensiones y facetas del NEO-PI-R y los 14 trastornos de personalidad del MCMI-III en una muestra no clínica española (N = 674). Se exploran las diferencias y similitudes con los resul- tados de Dyce y O’Connor en una muestra americana con los mismos instrumentos. Como se esperaba, los análisis factoriales de facetas reteniendo cinco factores mostraron un modelo de relaciones muy similar entre ambas muestras, con un coeficiente de la congruencia total de 0,92, y coeficientes de congruencia de factor aceptables, salvo para el factor Apertura (0,68). En consonancia con las predicciones de Widiger y Widiger et al. los porcentajes de correlaciones significativas estaban alrededor de 60% en ambas muestras, y la mayoría coincidían. El análisis de regresión múltiple con dimensiones también reveló un gran parecido entre los resultados americanos y españoles, Neuroticismo fue el predictor más relacionado con los trastornos de personalidad. Se encontraron diferencias en las regresiones por facetas, aunque la varianza explicada fue prácticamente la misma que en las dimensiones. Se discute la validez transcultural y el valor predictivo del NEO-PI-R sobre los trastornos de personalidad del MCMI-III, junto con las ventajas relativas de las facetas sobre las dimensiones.

Para determinar los factores de explotación relacionados con la reactivación ovárica postparto en vacas nodrizas se realizó un análisis global de una serie de indicadores productivos y la duración del anestro postparto (APP) de 549 vacas explotadas en condiciones extensivas. Debido a la naturaleza multifactorial del proceso en estudio se eligió la metodología estadística multivariante (Análisis Factorial de Correspondencias Múltiples y Análisis Cluster). La duración del APP estuvo asociada a cuatro factores que explicaron el 59% de la heterogeneidad inicial de la muestra y que se definieron como: «Alimentación preparto» (19% de la inercia), «Alimentación postparto-Edad» (16.4%), «Manejo del ternero» (13%) y «Dificultad al parto» (10.5%). Estos factores se introdujeron en un Análisis Cluster que identificó cinco grupos de vacas con características productivas y reproductivas diferentes, y que denominamos como: «Primíparas», «Acceso restringido», «Acceso Libre-Parda de Montaña», «Parto de otoño» y «Parto de primavera». La raza no estuvo relacionada con la duración del APP, aunque el análisis Cluster asoció los largos APP inducidos por la crianza libre con la raza Parda de Montaña. En la raza Parda de Montaña, la duración del APP fue mayor en primavera que en otoño debido a diferencias nutricionales más que a un efecto estacional en sí. El parto de otoño se adaptó mejor a las condiciones de montaña seca.

”compositions” is a new R-package for the analysis of compositional and positive data.It contains four classes corresponding to the four different types of compositional andpositive geometry (including the Aitchison geometry). It provides means for computation,plotting and high-level multivariate statistical analysis in all four geometries.These geometries are treated in an fully analogous way, based on the principle of workingin coordinates, and the object-oriented programming paradigm of R. In this way,called functions automatically select the most appropriate type of analysis as a functionof the geometry. The graphical capabilities include ternary diagrams and tetrahedrons,various compositional plots (boxplots, barplots, piecharts) and extensive graphical toolsfor principal components. Afterwards, ortion and proportion lines, straight lines andellipses in all geometries can be added to plots. The package is accompanied by ahands-on-introduction, documentation for every function, demos of the graphical capabilitiesand plenty of usage examples. It allows direct and parallel computation inall four vector spaces and provides the beginner with a copy-and-paste style of dataanalysis, while letting advanced users keep the functionality and customizability theydemand of R, as well as all necessary tools to add own analysis routines. Background: Prolificacy is the most important trait influencing the reproductive efficiency of pig production systems. The low heritability and sex-limited expression of prolificacy have hindered to some extent the improvement of this trait through artificial selection. Moreover, the relative contributions of additive, dominant and epistatic QTL to the genetic variance of pig prolificacy remain to be defined. In this work, we have undertaken this issue by performing one-dimensional and bi-dimensional genome scans for number of piglets born alive (NBA) and total number of piglets born (TNB) in a three generation Iberian by Meishan F2 intercross. Results: The one-dimensional genome scan for NBA and TNB revealed the existence of two genome-wide highly significant QTL located on SSC13 (P < 0.001) and SSC17 (P < 0.01) with effects on both traits. This relative paucity of significant results contrasted very strongly with the wide array of highly significant epistatic QTL that emerged in the bi-dimensional genome-wide scan analysis. As much as 18 epistatic QTL were found for NBA (four at P < 0.01 and five at P < 0.05) and TNB (three at P < 0.01 and six at P < 0.05), respectively. These epistatic QTL were distributed in multiple genomic regions, which covered 13 of the 18 pig autosomes, and they had small individual effects that ranged between 3 to 4% of the phenotypic variance. Different patterns of interactions (a × a, a × d, d × a and d × d) were found amongst the epistatic QTL pairs identified in the current work.Conclusions: The complex inheritance of prolificacy traits in pigs has been evidenced by identifying multiple additive (SSC13 and SSC17), dominant and epistatic QTL in an Iberian × Meishan F2 intercross. Our results demonstrate that a significant fraction of the phenotypic variance of swine prolificacy traits can be attributed to first-order gene-by-gene interactions emphasizing that the phenotypic effects of alleles might be strongly modulated by the genetic background where they segregate.

An analysis of silicon on insulator structures obtained by single and multiple implants by means of Raman scattering and photoluminescence spectroscopy is reported. The Raman spectra obtained with different excitation powers and wavelengths indicate the presence of a tensile strain in the top silicon layer of the structures. The comparison between the spectra measured in both kinds of samples points out the existence in the multiple implant material of a lower strain for a penetration depth about 300 nm and a higher strain for higher penetration depths. These results have been correlated with transmission electron microscopy observations, which have allowed to associate the higher strain to the presence of SiO2 precipitates in the top silicon layer, close to the buried oxide. The found lower strain is in agreement with the better quality expected for this material, which is corroborated by the photoluminescence data.

In this paper we study the evolution of the kinetic features of the martensitic transition in a Cu-Al-Mn single crystal under thermal cycling. The use of several experimental techniques including optical microscopy, calorimetry, and acoustic emission, has enabled us to perform an analysis at multiple scales. In particular, we have focused on the analysis of avalanche events (associated with the nucleation and growth of martensitic domains), which occur during the transition. There are significant differences between the kinetics at large and small length scales. On the one hand, at small length scales, small avalanche events tend to sum to give new larger events in subsequent loops. On the other hand, at large length scales the large domains tend to split into smaller ones on thermal cycling. We suggest that such different behavior is the necessary ingredient that leads the system to the final critical state corresponding to a power-law distribution of avalanches.

Multiple Sclerosis is the most common non-traumatic cause of neurologicaldisability in young people. There is no cure yet, and until recently, few long-termtherapies existed. Interferon beta (IFNβ) was the first treatment, and remains the mostcommonly prescribed. One of the most significant problems of IFNβ therapy is theproduction of drug specific antibodies. Up to 45% of patients develop neutralizingantibodies (NAbs) to IFNβ products. The neutralizing antibody binds to the biologicalagent preventing its interaction with its receptor, inhibiting the biological action of theprotein, which abrogates the clinical efficacy of IFNβ treatment. Interferon-betamediates its response by binding to its high affinity cell surface receptor and initiatingthe JAK/STAT signalling cascade. In this project we have analyzed the IFNβ signalingpathway in macrophages when neutralizing antibodies are present. The response tothis pathway after IFNβ stimulation shows a transient oscillatory rhythm of STAT1phosphorylation, which varies as NAbs concentration increases. To improve ourunderstanding of that behavior, we extended an existing mathematical model based onnonlinear ordinary differential equations of JAK/STAT pathway by including IFN-NAbassociation and IFN-activation receptor. Combining our theoretical model withexperimental data we could study the role of neutralizing antibodies on the molecularresponse and determine its lifetime after cytokine stimulation.

Un reto al ejecutar las aplicaciones en un cluster es lograr mejorar las prestaciones utilizando los recursos de manera eficiente, y este reto es mayor al utilizar un ambiente distribuido. Teniendo en cuenta este reto, se proponen un conjunto de reglas para realizar el cómputo en cada uno de los nodos, basado en el análisis de cómputo y comunicaciones de las aplicaciones, se analiza un esquema de mapping de celdas y un método para planificar el orden de ejecución, tomando en consideración la ejecución por prioridad, donde las celdas de fronteras tienen una mayor prioridad con respecto a las celdas internas. En la experimentación se muestra el solapamiento del computo interno con las comunicaciones de las celdas fronteras, obteniendo resultados donde el Speedup aumenta y los niveles de eficiencia se mantienen por encima de un 85%, finalmente se obtiene ganancias de los tiempos de ejecución, concluyendo que si se puede diseñar un esquemas de solapamiento que permita que la ejecución de las aplicaciones SPMD en un cluster se hagan de forma eficiente.
