Calibration of CES functions for real-world multisectoral modeling

We show how to calibrate CES production and utility functions when indirect taxation affecting inputs and consumption is present. These calibrated functions can then be used in computable general equilibrium models. Taxation modifies the standard calibration procedures since any taxed good has two associated prices and a choice of reference value units has to be made. We also provide an example of computer code to solve the calibration of CES utilities under two alternate normalizations. To our knowledge, this paper fills a methodological gap in the CGE literature.

Foundations for contest success functions

In the literature the outcome of contests is either interpreted as win probabilities or as shares of the prize. With this in mind, we examine two approaches to contest success functions. In the first we analyze the implications of contestants' incomplete information concerning the "type" of the contest administrator. While in the case of two contestants this approach can rationalize prominent contest success functions, we show that it runs into difficulties when there are more agents. Our second approach interprets contest success functions as sharing rules and establishes a connection to bargaining and claims problems which is independent of the number of contestants. Both approaches provide foundations for popular contest success functions and guidelines for the definition of new ones. Keywords: Endogenous Contests, Contest Success Function. Generalized multiresolution analyses with given multiplicity functions

Generalized multiresolution analyses are increasing sequences of subspaces of a Hilbert space H that fail to be multiresolution analyses in the sense of wavelet theory because the core subspace does not have an orthonormal basis generated by a fixed scaling function. Previous authors have studied a multiplicity function m which, loosely speaking, measures the failure of the GMRA to be an MRA. When the Hilbert space H is L2(Rn), the possible multiplicity functions have been characterized by Baggett and Merrill. Here we start with a function m satisfying a consistency condition which is known to be necessary, and build a GMRA in an abstract Hilbert space with multiplicity function m.

The simultaneous conjugacy problem in groups of piecewise linear functions

Guba and Sapir asked, in their joint paper [8], if the simultaneous conjugacy problem was solvable in Diagram Groups or, at least, for Thompson's group F. We give an elementary proof for the solution of the latter question. This relies purely on the description of F as the group of piecewise linear orientation-preserving homeomorphisms of the unit. The techniques we develop allow us also to solve the ordinary conjugacy problem as well, and we can compute roots and centralizers. Moreover, these techniques can be generalized to solve the same questions in larger groups of piecewise-linear homeomorphisms.

Aplicació informàtica per al registre del comportament motor en les situacions pràxiques

Durante los dos años que van desde noviembre de 2005 a noviembre de 2007, en los que se ha llevado a cabo la Beca de colaborador en el ámbito del deporte, tanto en el CAR de Sant Cugat como en el Consell Catala de l’Esport, se han investigado y estudiado las acciones práxicas de un deporte tan popular, pero al mismo tiempo tan desconocido, como es el futbol. El primer año se investigaron las acciones práxicas que finalizaron en gol en la Liga de Fútbol Profesional, Liga Española, temporada 2005-2006. Dichas investigaciones sirvieron como una primera toma de contacto en relación a este tipo de estudios y sirvieron también para elaborar unas primeras aplicaciones informáticas que nos permitieran el registro de dichas acciones para su posterior análisis. Durante el segundo año, se trabajó en la confección de una aplicación informática que reflejara y permitiera el registro de las acciones práxicas del portero de futbol durante un partido de competición. Así mismo, durante este segundo año también se elaboraron y publicaron dos artículos científicos relacionados con las investigaciones llevadas a cabo en el primer año de Beca. La finalidad y propósito de toda esta serie de investigaciones y trabajos ha sido conocer en profundidad el deporte en cuestión para poder plantear nuevas metodologías y planteamientos de entrenamiento basadas en la competición, que nos permitan mejorar el rendimiento en el deporte investigado.

Inversion of analytic characteristic functions and infinite convolutions of exponential and Laplace densities

This paper shows that certain quotients of entire functions are characteristic functions. Under some conditions, we provide expressions for the densities of such characteristic functions which turn out to be generalized Dirichlet series which in turn can be expressed as an infinite linear combination of exponential or Laplace densities. We apply these results to several examples.

El turismo, motor fundamental de la economía de Cataluña (1951-2010)

Este trabajo presenta las dimensiones básicas de las actividades productivas asociadas al turismo receptor en Cataluña desde 1951 hasta 2010. Analiza sus características desde una perspectiva macroeconómica y con un enfoque comparativo. Demuestra que se ha ido transformando desde el modelo de sol y playa, que definió la fase de instalación del turismo de masas, hasta convertirse en un destino turístico muy diversificado, con un protagonismo creciente de la conurbación de Barcelona. Esta transformación ha facilitado una positiva adaptación a la segmentación de la demanda turística internacional. El turismo extranjero ha proporcionado a Cataluña el liderazgo español y europeo y se ha convertido en motor fundamental del crecimiento económico.

Welfare Maximizing Contest Success Functions when the Planner Cannot Commit

We analyze how a contest organizer chooses optimally the winner when the contestants' efforts are already exerted and commitment to the use of a given contest success function is not possible. We de…ne the notion of rationalizability in mixed-strategies to capture such a situation. Our approach allows to derive different contest success functions depending on the aims and attitudes of the decider. We derive contest success functions which are closely related to commonly used functions providing new support for them. By taking into account social welfare considerations our approach bridges the contest literature and the recent literature on political economy. Implication of Nerve Growth Factor in intestinal mucosal mast cell activity and colonic motor alterations in a model of ovalbumin-induced gut dysfunction in rats

We determined NGF involvement in MMCs and colonic motor alterations in an ovalbumin (OVA)-induced gut dysfunction model in rats. Animals received OVA (6 weeks), with/without simultaneous K252a (TrkA antagonist) treatment. MMCs, rat mast cell protease II (RMCPII) levels and colonic contractility in vitro were assessed. OVA increased MMC density and RMCPII concentration. Spontaneous contractility was similar in both groups and inhibited by K252a. Carbachol responses were increased by OVA in a K252a-independent manner. NO-synthase inhibition increased spontaneous activity in OVA-treated animals in a K252a-dependent manner. These observations support an involvement of NGF in the functional changes observed in this model.
