The impact of women's educational and economic resources on fertility. Spanish birth cohorts 1901-1950

In this chapter we portray the effects of female education and professional achievementon fertility decline in Spain over the period 1920-1980 (birth cohorts of 1900-1950).A longitudinal econometric approach is used to test the hypothesis that the effectsof women s education in the revaluing of their time had a very significant influence onfertility decline. Although in the historical context presented here improvements inschooling were on a modest scale, they were continuous (with the interruption of theCivil War) and had a significant impact in shaping a model of low fertility in Spain. Wealso stress the relevance of this result in a context such as the Spanish for which liberalvalues were absent, fertility control practices were forbidden, and labour forceparticipation of women was politically and socially constrained.

L'Evolució recent del paisatge a l'Alt Empordà a partir de l'anàlisi en els canvis d'usos i cobertes del sòl (1950-2000)

L'objectiu d’aquesta comunicació és fer una síntesi del treball de recerca “Processos de canvi ambiental recent a les àrees rurals mediterrànies” realitzat per un equip d’investigadors de la Universitat de Girona i de la Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona entre els anys 1997 i 2000. El treball fou publicat l’any 2002 per la Càtedra de Geografia i Pensament Territorial i l’Institut de Medi Ambient de la Universitat de Girona sota el títol de "Canvis socioambientals a l’Alt Empordà (1950-2000). Natura i història en l’evolució recent del paisatge altempordanès". La seva fita fonamental fou la de proporcionar una explicació detallada del recent canvi socioambiental (1950-2000) a les àrees rurals mediterrànies, prenent com a exemple el gradient muntanya, transició, plana i litoral de la comarca de l’Alt Empordà. En aquesta comunicació es presenta especialment una part d’aquest treball, la dedicada a l’anàlisi dels canvis en els usos i les cobertes del sòl en cada un dels sectors diferenciats a la nostra àrea d’estudi (muntanya, transició, plana i litoral)

Tornadoes and waterspouts in Catalonia (1950-2009)

This paper presents a preliminary climatology of tornadoes and waterspouts in Catalonia (NE Iberian Peninsula). A database spanning 60 yr (1950-2009) has been developed on the basis of information collected from various sources such as weather reports, insurance companies, newspapers and damage surveys. This database has been subjected to a rigorous validation process, and the climatology describes its main features: timing, spatial pattern, and trends in the tornado and waterspout distribution. Results show the highest concentration of tornadoes from August to October, the highest density in the heavily populated coastal areas and a growing positive trend that is likely more closely linked to an increase in observation and perception rather than a real climatic trend.

Miquel de Garganta i Fabrega (Olot, 1903-1988)

Quan faltava poc més de tres mesos per al seu 85è aniversari, ha mort, el 12 de setembre de 1988, a Olot, on havia nascut el 23 de desembre de 1903, el Dr. Miquel de Garganta i Fàbrega, historiador de la Botànica i membre d'una coneguda familia d'intellectuals de la Garrotxa.

Harinera La Montserrat, S.A, a company involved in the manufacturing and trading of cereals and flour, was founded in Girona in 1898 by José Ensesa y Cía., Sociedad en Comandita. With the objective to determine how the product activity of this business was structured, we have studied in detail the operations that were carried out over the agricultural year 1903-1904. We have focused on three main aspects. Firstly, the purchasing of wheat (origin, transportation, prices); secondly, the production of flour (using internal and external wheat, profits); and thirdly, its distribution (customers, destination). Finally, we have analyzed the profit and loos account for this period in order to find out if this business was profitable

La Misión Indígena San Francisco Solano de Tacaaglé en las tierras fiscales de Formosa (1900-1950)

[spa]La Misión Indígena fue inaugurada en el año 1901, en la zona del río Pilcomayo del Territorio Nacional de Formosa, precisamente al costado de la concesión paraguaya otorgada a Elisa (Elizabeth Alicia) Lynch. Desde entonces, fue trasladada, primero a Tacaaglé en 1902, donde adquirió el nombre de Misión San Francisco Solano, y posteriormente, en 1915, al riacho El Porteño. Los misioneros franciscanos asumieron la tarea de formar a “colonos indígenas” tobas y pilagás para la producción de azúcar. Se analiza la evolución de la Misión franciscana y el impacto de la llegada del Ferrocarril de Formosa a Embarcación (F.C.F.E.). 1,2-Dimethylindole-3-sulfonyl (MIS) as protecting group for the side chain of arginine

The protection of arginine (Arg) side chains is a crucial issue in peptide chemistry because of the propensity of the basic guanidinium group to produce side reactions. Currently, sulfonyl-type protecting groups, such as 2,2,5,7,8-pentamethylchroman (Pmc) and 2,2,4,6,7-pentamethyldihydrobenzofurane (Pbf), are the most widely used for this purpose. Nevertheless, Arg side chain protection remains problematic as a result of the acid stability of these two compounds. This issue is even more relevant in Arg-rich sequences, acid-sensitive peptides and large-scale syntheses. The 1,2-dimethylindole-3-sulfonyl (MIS) group is more acid-labile than Pmc and Pbf and can therefore be a better option for Arg side chain protection. In addition, MIS is compatible with tryptophan-containing peptides.

A partir de l’estudi deis memorials que la ciutat—en aquest cas Lleida— facilita a aquests missatgers, a l’article s'estudien les relacions d'aquest nucli urbà i les Corts catalanes, fent especial insistència en els assumptes i les relacions que es esencadenen dins del braç reial, com també les negociacions que es mantenen amb la Corona.

SiC-Based MIS gas sensor for high water vapor environments

In this work we will prove that SiC-based MIS capacitors can work in environments with extremely high concentrations of water vapor and still be sensitive to hydrogen, CO and hydrocarbons, making these devices suitable for monitoring the exhaust gases of hydrogen or hydrocarbons based fuel cells. Under the harshest conditions (45% of water vapor by volume ratio to nitrogen), Pt/TaOx/SiO2/SiC MIS capacitors are able to detect the presence of 1 ppm of hydrogen, 2 ppm of CO, 100 ppm of ethane or 20 ppm of ethene, concentrations that are far below the legal permissible exposure limits.

Este artículo aporta nueva evidencia empírica sobre la evolución del gasto social en España y Portugal entre 1950 y 1980. A partir de ésta se ha podido analizar la relación entre dictaduras y redistribución, ya que ambos países sufrieron gobiernos no democráticos durante la mayor parte del periodo. Además del gasto social público y su clasificación por funciones, en este artículo se analiza también la forma de financiación de dicho gasto social.

Degradación de las fotografías anteriores a 1950 por hidrólisis ácida en archivos fotográficos

El patrimonio fotográfico sobre soportes plásticos, tanto si se trata de acetatos como de nitratos está expuesto a un proceso de degradación por hidrólisis ácida que es autocatalítico. Aunque existe bibliografía extensa sobre los procedimientos de conservación y preservación de este tipo de material, no abunda aquella que analice la situación real y actual de las colecciones custodiadas por los centros documentales. El presente trabajo tiene por objetivo dar a conocer el estado de conservación de este tipo de patrimonio en Cataluña, así como las condiciones en las que se produce dicha conservación. De los resultados de infiere que los procedimientos adecuados de conservación solamente se han aplicado recientemente y que las instalaciones con control medioambiental están infrautilizadas. Aunque cerca de un 85 % del material todavía no ha alcanzado un estado de catálisis autoinducida deben tomarse medidas rápidas de preservación puesto que una tercera parte del material estudiado se encuntra cerca de ello.

The long run development of Chile and the Natural Resources curse. Linkages, policy and growth, 1850-1950

This chapter analyses the effects of Natural Resources on the Chilean economy in the long run -1850-1950-. Specifically, the authors focus their attention on the mining cycles -nitrates and copper- and their impact on the mining activity. We also compare it with the evolution of the industry and whole economy, and how this has affected the economic growth of the country. In that sense, the industrial performance in Chile at the end of the 19th century until the Great Depression is still under debate. The optimistic view of Kirsch -1977- forehead the pessimistic view of Lagos -1966- and Palma -1979-. The new data and its analyses shows a neutral effect of the Natural Resources in the industrial development.

The First Privatization Policy in a Democracy: Selling State-Owned Enterprises in 1948-1950, Puerto Rico

In the 1940s, when the Governor of Puerto Rico was appointed by the US President and the Puerto Rican government was answerable only to the US Federal government, a large state-owned enterprise (SOE) sector was established on the island. Public services such as water, transportation and energy were nationalized, and several new manufacturing SOEs were created to produce cement, glass, shoes, paper and chalkboard, and clay products. These enterprises were created and managed by government-owned corporations. Later on, between 1948 and 1950, under the island’s first elected Governor, the government sold these SOEs to private groups. This paper documents both the creation and the privatization of the SOE sector in Puerto Rico, and analyzes the role played by ideology, political interests, and economic concerns in the decision to privatize them. Whereas ideological factors might have played a significant role in the building of the SOE sector, we find that privatization was driven basically by economic factors, such as the superior efficiency of private firms in the sectors where the SOEs operated, and by the desire to attract private industrial investment to the Puerto Rican economy.

Brideshead Revisited (1945) by Evelyn Waugh (1903-1966): the benefit of an Arcadian experience in confronting the human tragedy

As the frontispiece of Book One of Evelyn Waugh’s Brideshead Revisited, the phrase ‘Et in Arcadia ego’ announces the author’s intention of making the classical Arcadian theme a key reference in a text that speaks of nostalgia for a joyful past in times marked by sadness and pain. However, an interpretation may be approached from several directions even within the classical tradition. Thus, without ignoring philological or artistic aspects of the topic, this article focuses on a close study of the author’s most original message: the notion that a youthful Arcadian experience confers on young men and women a ‘residue of happiness’ able to sustain their future development and assist them in dealing with the challenges of personal tragedy.
