Efficient knowledge retrieval to calibrate input variables in forest fire prediction

Forest fires are a serious threat to humans and nature from an ecological, social and economic point of view. Predicting their behaviour by simulation still delivers unreliable results and remains a challenging task. Latest approaches try to calibrate input variables, often tainted with imprecision, using optimisation techniques like Genetic Algorithms. To converge faster towards fitter solutions, the GA is guided with knowledge obtained from historical or synthetical fires. We developed a robust and efficient knowledge storage and retrieval method. Nearest neighbour search is applied to find the fire configuration from knowledge base most similar to the current configuration. Therefore, a distance measure was elaborated and implemented in several ways. Experiments show the performance of the different implementations regarding occupied storage and retrieval time with overly satisfactory results.

Innovation, R&D spillovers and productivity: the role of knowledge-intensive services

This paper analyses the performance of companies’ R&D and innovation and the effects of intra- and inter-industry R&D spillover on firms’ productivity in Catalonia. The paper deals simultaneously with the performance of manufacturing and service firms, with the aim of highlighting the growing role of knowledge-intensive services in promoting innovation and productivity gains. We find that intra-industry R&D spillovers have an important effect on the productivity level of manufacturing firms, and the inter-industrial R&D spillovers related to computer and software services also play an important role, especially in high-tech manufacturing industries. The main conclusion is that the traditional classification of manufactured goods and services no longer makes sense in the ‘knowledge economy’ and in Catalonia the regional policy makers will have to design policies that favour inter-industrial R&D flows, especially from high-tech services.

"El Portalet": portal del centre per a dispositius mòbils

Treball de recerca realitzat per una alumna d’ensenyament secundari i guardonat amb un Premi CIRIT per fomentar l'esperit científic del Jovent l’any 2008. S’ha treballat per generar una web consultable a través de dispositius mòbils.

Portal web inmobiliario Luxury Properties con posicionamiento SEO

Este documento explica la metodología de trabajo utilizada durante el desarrollo de este proyecto. El resultado obtenido ha sido un producto que forma parte del portal web Luxury Porperties. Luxury Properties es una marca comercial, creada por la compañía Luxury Dreams, para identificar un portal web especializado en las propiedades de lujo. Para desarrollar este concepto, la empresa compró el dominio luxuryproperties.es con el objetivo de crear un sistema que implemente toda la lógica de negocio necesaria para la publicidad y mercadeo de sus productos. Al final del documento se encuentran las recomendaciones y las futuras valoraciones a tener en cuenta por el cliente en futuras ampliaciones del portal.

Diseño e implementación de un portal web para una empresa de sistemas de control de iluminación

El objetivo del proyecto es facilitar a los clientes de la empresa el acceso a las actualizaciones de software y a los modelos de funcionamiento a través de un portal WEB. Además, se desea mejorar la imagen de empresa que se ofrece a los clientes y futuros clientes incluyendo información relacionada con la empresa y sus productos. Para cumplir con estos requisitos la aplicación hará uso del lenguaje de etiquetas HTML junto con CSS, el lenguaje de programación PHP y el sistema gestor de datos MySQL para generar contenidos dinámicos.

Estudi, disseny i implementació d'un portal WEB per a una empresa d'informàtica

Creació d’un portal web per a una petita empresa informàtica. Utilitzarem un gestor de continguts com a eina principal per la implementació, i posarem en funcionament el portal. Aquest tindrà un usuari administrador de continguts, que s’encarregarà d’actualitzar, ampliar i gestionar tots els continguts de la web, adaptant-los a les necessitats de l’empresa. Els visitants tindran la possibilitat de registrar-se accedint així a diverses funcionalitats, com un servei d’ajut online o un petit catàleg de material. La part pública del portal tindrà tot tipus d’informació sobre l’empresa i la pròpia web. Aquestes seccions s’aniran actualitzant quan l’empresa així ho requereixi.

Language knowledge and earnings in Catalonia

In this paper we are aimed to investigate the relationship between Catalan knowledge and individual earnings in Catalonia. Using data from 2006, we find a positive earning return to Catalan proficiency; however, when accounting for self-selection into Catalan knowledge, we find a higher language return (20% of extra earnings), suggesting that individuals who are more prone to know Catalan are also less remunerated than others (negative selection effect). Moreover, we also find important complementarities between language knowledge and completed education, which means that only more educated individuals benefit from Catalan knowledge.

Language knowledge and earnings in Catalonia

This paper investigates the economic value of Catalan knowledge for national and foreign first- and second-generation immigrants in Catalonia. Specifically, drawing on data from the “Survey on Living Conditions and Habits of the Catalan Population (2006)”, we want to quantify the expected earnings differential between individuals who are proficient in Catalan and those who are not, taking into account the potential endogeneity between knowledge of Catalan and earnings. The results indicate the existence of a positive return to knowledge of Catalan, with a 7.5% increase in earnings estimated by OLS; however, when we account for the presence of endogeneity, monthly earnings are around 18% higher for individuals who are able to speak and write Catalan. However, we also find that language and education are complementary inputs for generating earnings in Catalonia, given that knowledge of Catalan increases monthly earnings only for more educated individuals.

DUGi, portal d'accés als materials en obert de la UdG

Desprès d'un cert temps de rodatge amb els tres repositoris institucionals de la UdG: DUGiDocs, DUGiMedia i DUGiFonsEspecials, haver-los migrat a la versió 1.5.2 de Dspace, i millorat les prestacions que ens permet el programari, ha arribat el moment de millorar l'eina que ens permet fer que el DUGi sigui un portal útil des del punt de vista de la usabilitat, visibilitat i difusió dels materials que es poden consultar als diferents repositoris.

Knowledge of Catalan, public/private sector choice and earnings: Evidence from a double sample selection model

This paper explores the earnings return to Catalan knowledge for public and private workers in Catalonia. In doing so, we allow for a double simultaneous selection process. We consider, on the one hand, the non-random allocation of workers into one sector or another, and on the other, the potential self-selection into Catalan proficiency. In addition, when correcting the earnings equations, we take into account the correlation between the two selectivity rules. Our findings suggest that the apparent higher language return for public sector workers is entirely accounted for by selection effects, whereas knowledge of Catalan has a significant positive return in the private sector, which is somewhat higher when the selection processes are taken into account.

Teacher strategies to elicit knowledge from students in the CLIL classroom: the purpose of questions in controlled patterns of teacher-student interaction

This Master Dissertation comprises two parts: a personal reflection and an empirical study. The personal reflection reviews the process of professionalization undergone by its author throughout the Master. The empirical study tackles teacher strategies to elicit knowledge from students in the CLIL classroom and more specifically the purpose of questions in controlled patterns of teacher-student interaction. The theories of relevant authors such as Vigotsky, Mercer and Tsui are used as a framework to analyze the data presented. The analysis shows the different strategies to elicit knowledge used by the teacher and the appropriateness of her questions in the analyzed interaction

L'aprenentatge basat en problemes (PBL) en la regulació del metabolisme. Desenvolupament del portal per a l'intercanvi d'experiències en PBL en ciències biomèdiques

L’aprenentatge basat en problemes està en fase experimental en tot el món i és objecte d’anàlisi i reflexió en moltes reunions internacionals. Tanmateix, no hi ha massa feina feta en aquesta direcció en el nostre camp més proper. Hem elaborat problemes per l’aprenentatge de la Regulació del Metabolisme i els hem incorporat a un porta virtual (http://www.ub.edu/GID-BBM). La finalitat d’aquesta estratègia és que mitjançant l’aprenentatge basat en problemes reals o simulacions de problemes reals s’aconsegueixi motivar l’alumnat a treballar de forma continuada durant tot el curs. La millora dels resultats acadèmics haurà de ser la conseqüència lògica d’aquest treball. La finalitat última del projecte que hem desenvolupat és preparar l’alumnat per la seva futura activitat professional a on serà molt important i valorat la seva capacitat de resposta davant de diferents problemes

L'aprenentatge basat en problemes en models híbrids de docència-aprenentatge

La Facultat de Ciències de la Salut i de la Vida ha utilitzat des de 2004 la metodologia d'aprenentatge basat en problemes (en endavant ABP) com a mètode docent en els seus estudis de Biologia. En aquest període hem après algunes de les claus de l'aplicació del mètode en els nostres estudis. En primer lloc, cal disposar d'elements formatius que afavoreixin la formació dels tutors que participin en el projecte. Per assolir aquest objectiu hem dissenyat un portal on els nostres professors poden disposar de materials útils per a la seva activitat, així com de documents que permetin entendre millor el que suposa l'ABP. En segon lloc, el projecte tenia l'objectiu de dissenyar i avaluar activitats que permetessin integrar les pràctiques de laboratori en la lògica de la resolució de problemes pròpia de l'ABP. En aquest sentit vam dissenyar dues activitats en el tercer curs de la llicenciatura que anomenaren aprenentatge basat en el laboratori (ABL). Per aquest motiu es van dissenyar problemes que tinguessin una primera part de resolució a l'aula en grup de tutoria i una segona que obligués els estudiants a realitzar experiments de laboratori dirigits a entendre i resoldre les qüestions plantejades al grup de tutoria. L'ABL-1 fou un projecte de biologia cel·lular i destinat a aprofundir en els mecanismes implicats en els fenòmens de diferenciació dels miòcits. L'ABL-2 era un projecte conjunt dels professors de Fisiologia vegetal, Bioestadística i Microbiologia. En aquest cas es desitjava que els estudiants plantegessin la resolució a un problema que suposava la manipulació genètica de cèl·lules vegetals per fer possible que produïssin una substància específica, l'escopolamina. Finalment els estudiants havien d'escriure un article original com a projecte final de cada ABL. Els resultats dels dos anys d'experimentació han esta altament satisfactoris, d'acord amb les enquestes completades per alumnes i professors.

Aplicació web per a empreses mitjanes amb un nombre considerable de treballadors per tal que puguin mantenir un control sobre les seves activitats i poder automatitzar unes altres. També serà per als treballadors ja que es fomentarà la comunicació entre iguals. Tindrem diversos tipus d’usuaris segons el seu càrrec i responsabilitat dins l’empresa, amb interfícies d'usuari diferents.
