Crystal engineering studies: polymorphs and co-crystals

We review the key topics of one of the areas with the biggest impact of the last years in the chemical and pharmaceutical industry that is Crystal Engineering. The relevance of polymorphs and co-crystals from different points of view is been highlighted and broadly illustrated by means of several recent examples of studies carried out in this field. In addition, the most suitableinstrumental techniques and the intellectual property implications are reviewed.

X-ray single crystal and powder diffraction: possibilities and applications

In this article the main possibilities of single crystal and powder diffraction analysis using conventional laboratory x-ray sources are introduced. Several examples of applications with different solid samples and in different fields of applications are shown illustrating the multidisciplinary capabilities of both techniques.

Utilización de otros láseres en odontología: Argón, Nd:YAP y Ho:YAG

Las ventajas que la incorporación del láser ha proporcionado a la Odontología abarcan todos los ámbitos. Así, los láseres de Argón, de Nd:YAP y de Ho:YAG, tienen aplicaciones muy concretas y de gran interés tanto en el campo de la terapéutica dental como en la especialida de cirugía bucal. Las aplicaciones principales del láser de Argón se centran en la polimerización de los materiales de restauración, en la endodoncia y dentro del ámbito de la cirugía bucal, en el corte de tejidos blandos, principalmente para la exéresis de lesiones vasculares y pigmentadas. El láser de Nd:YAP se utiliza principalmente en el campo de la endodoncia y la periodoncia, y el láser de Ho:YAG se emplea en cirugía periapical y en la cirugía artroscópica de la articulación temporomandibular.

Si3N4 single-crystal nanowires grown from silicon micro- and nanoparticles near the threshold of passive oxidation

A simple and most promising oxide-assisted catalyst-free method is used to prepare silicon nitride nanowires that give rise to high yield in a short time. After a brief analysis of the state of the art, we reveal the crucial role played by the oxygen partial pressure: when oxygen partial pressure is slightly below the threshold of passive oxidation, a high yield inhibiting the formation of any silica layer covering the nanowires occurs and thanks to the synthesis temperature one can control nanowire dimensions

Wavefront reconstruction by adding modulation capabilities of two liquid crystal devices

We analyze the behavior of complex information in the Fresnel domain, taking into account the limited capability to display complex values of liquid crystal devices when they are used as holographic displays. To do this analysis we study the reconstruction of Fresnel holograms at several distances using the different parts of the complex distribution. We also use the information adjusted with a method that combines two configurations of the devices in an adding architecture. The results of the error analysis show different behavior for the reconstructions when using the different methods. Simulated and experimental results are presented.

Determination and characterization of quinolones in foodstuffs of animal origin by CE-UV, LC-UV, LC-Fl, LC-MS and LC-MS/MS

In this work methods for the multiresidue determination of the series of quinolones include in the European regulation in food of animal origin are de veloped and validated in line with Commission Decision 2002/657/EC in terms of linearity, decision limit, capability detection, precision and stability. Mult iresidue methods were established to allow the determination of quinolones covered by EU legislation in 2377/90/EC in muscle of chicken, turkey, pig and cow, plasma of cow and pig, liver of pig and milk of cow. First an extraction step was optimized and a SPE step was applied to clean!up and preconcentrate quinolones prior to their separation by CE or LC and determination by CE!UV, LC!UV, LC!Fl, LC!MS with different ion sources (ESI ,ApCI) and different mass analyser (Q, ToF) and LC!E SI!QqQ tandem mass spectrometry. The limits of quantification obtained are always lower than Maxim um Residue Limit (MRL) established by EU for quinolones in animal products and they can be applied to the control of quinolones in foodstuffs of animal origin . Finally the proposed methods were applied to determine quinolones in samples of turkey and pig muscle, pig plasma and milk of cow. Excellent quality parameters and reduced time of analysis were obtained when LC!ESI!MS/MS is used, although the others techniques presented too satisfactory results.

La Directiva 2004/38/CE y la jurisprudencia del TJCE sobre el disfrute de las prestaciones sociales: ¿freno al avance en materia social o adecuación a los intereses de los Estados?

El artículo tiene como objetivo analizar el modelo social incorporado en la Directiva 2004/38/CE en el marco de la jurisprudencia del Tribunal de Justicia. El artículo está dividido en dos partes. En la primera se describe la evolución del modelo de coordinación social de la Unión Europea y los avances propuestos por el TJCE a partir de la ciudadanía europea sobre el acceso a las prestaciones sociales (Martínez Sala, Grzelczyk y Collins). La segunda parte del artículo describe el modelo social incorporado en la Directiva 2004/38/ CE y los cambios que éste supuso para la jurisprudencia que venía dictando el TJCE. El artículo concluye que la Directiva 2004/38/CE tuvo un papel de contención frente los pasos dados por el Tribunal para incluir los derechos sociales en la ciudadanía de la Unión; además, la Directiva fragmentó la interpretación del principio de no discriminación para los ciudadanos no económicamente activos.
