The stratigraphic basis of this work has allowed the use of larger foraminifers in the biostratigraphic characterisation of the new Shallow Benthic Zones (SBZ). This part of the volume presents a description of the sedimentary cycles formed by the transgressive-regressive systems of the Lutetian and Bartonian in the southeastern sector of the Ebro Foreland Basin. Concerning the Lutetian deposits studied in the Amer-Vic and Empordà areas, four sedimentary cycles have been characterised. The first and second are found within the Tavertet/Girona Limestone Formation (Reguant, 1967; Pallí, 1972), while the third and fourth cycles cover the Coll de Malla Marl Formation (Clavell et al., 1970), the Bracons Formation (Gich, 1969, 1972), the Banyoles Marl Formation (Almela and Ríos, 1943), and the Bellmunt Formation (Gich, 1969, 1972). In the Bartonian deposits studied in the Igualada area, two transgressive-regressive sedimentary cycles have been characterised in the Collbàs Formation (Ferrer, 1971), the Igualada Formation (Ferrer, 1971), and the Tossa Formation (Ferrer, 1971). The Shallow Benthic Zones (SBZs) recognised within the Lutetian are the following: SBZ 13, from the Early Lutetian, in the transgressive system of the first cycle; SBZ 14, from the Middle Lutetian, in the second cycle and the lower part of the transgressive system of the third cycle; SBZ 15, from the Middle Lutetian, in the remaining parts of the third system; SBZ 16, from the Late Lutetian, throughout the fourth cycle. The association of larger foraminifers in the first and second cycles of the Bartonian in the Igualada area has been used as the basis for the definition of SBZs 17 and 18 recognised in the Bartonian of the western Tethys.

The influence of incorporating 5-tert-butyl isophthalic units (tBI) in the polymer chain of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) on the crystallization behavior, crystal structure, and tensile and gas transport properties of this polyester was evaluated. Random poly(ethyleneterephthalate-co-5-tert-butyl isophthalate) copolyesters (PETtBI) containing between 5 and 40 mol% of tBI units were examined. Isothermal crystallization studies were performed on amorphous glassy films at 120 8C and on molten samples at 200 8C by means of differential scanning calorimetry. Furthermore, the non-isothermal crystallization behavior of the copolyesters was investigated. It was observed that both crystallinity and crystallization rate of the PETtBI copolyesters tend to decrease largely with the comonomeric content, except for the copolymer containing 5 mol% of tBI units, which crystallized faster than PET. Fiber X-ray diffraction patterns of the semicrystalline PETtBI copolyesters proved that they adopt the same triclinic crystal structure as PET with the comonomeric units being excluded from the crystalline phase. Although PETtBI copolyesters became brittle for higher contents in tBI, the tensile modulus and strength of PET were barely affected by copolymerization. The ncorporation of tBI units slightly increased the permeability of PET, but copolymers containing up to 20 mol% of the comonomeric units were still able to present barrier properties.

This paper takes a regional studies approach to assess spin-offs from a university-based technology transfer network. We first detect the regional objectives, inputs and outputs needed to assess spin-offs from support programmes. We then provide evidence on regional mechanisms for firm creation. We analyse spin-offs created at Catalan universities and find that many efficient spin-offs have formal technology transfer agreements, and emerge from technology-oriented universities. We also find that higher innovation levels and experience from the parent university are associated with higher efficiency, which is positively related to future fundamental profitability. Finally, we propose regional policy making and research directions.

L’objecte d’estudi d’aquest projecte final, és el mercat del vi espanyol als Estats Units. Es tracta d’un mercat relativament jove degut a que la cultura del vi per un nord-americà amb una renda mitja es nova. Encara així, els Estats Units es el tercer país amb major consum per volum del món. Per tal de poder entendre millor aquest mercat, s’estudiaran les diferents característiques del país, les regions on es produeix el vi i la seva distribució i els diferents agents que s’impliquen en aquest procés en el país. Un cop analitzat els aspectes econòmics i les característiques més importants d’Estats Units, es realitzarà una anàlisi de l’oferta i de la demanda del sector del vi en aquest país per poder realitzar una comparativa més endavant amb el mercat del vi espanyol i de la perspectiva que es té a Estats Units sobre aquest tipus de vi. Un aspecte molt important que s’ha observat es la dificultat d’accés al mercat del vi a Estats Units. Per això, s’ha dedicat un capítol sencer a analitzar els diferents controls i regulacions que s’han de tenir en compte alhora d’importar vi a aquest país americà. Per últim, es realitza un anàlisi del mercat del vi espanyol i la perspectiva que es té dels vins espanyols a Estats Units. En aquest capítol s’analitzarà sobre tot la producció, el consum i les exportacions espanyoles i s’explicarà amb detall el concepte de denominacions d’origen.

Analysis of stratigraphic terminology and classification, shows that time-related stratigraphic units, which by definition have a global extent, are the concern of international cornrnissions and committees of the intemational Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS) . In contrast, lithostratigraphic, and other closely related units, are regional in extent and are catalogued in the International Stratigraphic Lexicon (ISL), the last volume of which, was published in 1987. Tlie intemational Commission on Stratigraphy (ICS) is currently attempting to revitalize the publication of ISL, given that the information contained in published volumes has never been updated, and that there has been a significant increase in stratigraphic research in recent decades. The proliferation of named units in the South Pyrenean and Ebro Basin Paleogene is evaluated to illustrate the extent of the problem. Moreover, new approaches to stratigraphic analysis have led to the naming of genetic units according to similar guidelines followed in the naming of descnptive or lithostratigraphic units. This has led to considerable confusion. The proposal to revitalize the ISL is accepted as part of the solution, that should also include the publication of critica1 catalogues, and the creation of norms for genetic unit terminology.
